Listening to music is one of my favorite things to do. I usually have it playing all day long, all genres and at all volumes. Now that I have children, I want to make sure that my children also develop a love more music.
I love teaching my children cute rhymes and songs, but seriously I can only sing "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" so many times in one day. And don't even get me started on the Wiggles (was a favorite of my daughters for a while - and I am so glad she has passed that stage LOL). I love that in the last few years, modern music genres are being re-invented for young children to enjoy.
One company that is bringing the love of music and multiculturalism to children is Putumayo World Music. I have been a fan for many years of the various CD's that have been released by Putumayo World Music. I have used them in my classrooms as an early childhood educator for many years and love all of the ones I have heard.
I was recently sent a complimentary copy of A Family Christmas and Jazz Around The World for the purpose of review. Thank you to Putumayo World Music for this opportunity.
A Family Christmas, Putumayo offers a collection of yuletide favorites by a fascinating array of artists that every family is sure to enjoy while trimming the tree or sharing a holiday dinner.
Seattle-based Johnny Bregar delivers an acoustic rendition of the time-honored “Santa Claus is Coming to Town,” recorded especially for this album. Sleigh bells jingle in singer-songwriter Martin Sexton’s stripped down version of “Holly Jolly Christmas.” Incorporating quirky vocals with a jazzy flare, California-based Big Bad Voodoo Daddy adds its signature retro-swing style to the Louis Armstrong hit “Is Zat You Santa Claus?,” bringing to mind images of Santa stealthily delivering presents to an eager household. And Leon Redbone’s heartwarming interpretation of the holiday standard “Let It Snow” will keep you cozy on the coldest of Christmas nights.
A Family Christmas also features classic songs by country music star Deana Carter, The Christmas Jug Band featuring bluesy singer-songwriters Angela Strehli and Maria Muldaur, British folksinger Kate Rusby, bluegrass innovator Sam Bush, and one of America’s best-loved party bands, Brave Combo. New Orleans-based husband and wife duo Debbie Davis and Matt Perrine and fellow Crescent City musicians Lars Edegran and His Santa Claus Revelers with Big Al Carson round out this joyous collection.
Jazz Around the World, showcases the powerful influence of jazz on musicians across the globe. Featuring both well established and newer artists performing extraordinary covers and originals, this collection incorporates a wide range of rhythms, instruments and melodies into a constantly evolving genre. With ancestral roots in Africa, jazz flowered into a dynamic force in the United States throughout the 20th century. And, over the years, it has borrowed from, influenced and blended with musical traditions around the world.
A Family Christmas - I really love this CD. I am completely addicted to collecting Christmas music, and this will definitely be part of my collection for many years to come. I love all the songs on the CD and the variety found in the different genres. I mean come on, where else would you find Deana Carter and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy on the same compilation. Only Putumayo could pull that off.
I love that all the songs are well known enough that even my three year old has begun to recognize them and has asked me to play "the Zat You Santa song". I have actually used this CD with my home daycare children while we had a parade in my living room, while watching the Santa Claus Parade on TV!! They danced and banged their instruments and had a great time. In fact we listened to it three times that morning.
Head over to Putumayo and get a free download of Brave Combo's "Jolly Old St. Nick" There is also a complete listing of tracks from the CD and you can listen to samples of each song.
A Family Christmas will be a great addition to your music collection.
Jazz Around The World - I have to admit I do not have a lot of jazz music in my personal music collection, but I do really enjoy this CD. I found it very soothing and calming. In fact, I have even used it for my children's nap time. I thought this was a wonderful mix of "world" jazz and I feel it would appeal to veteran jazz listeners and yet is a great introduction for those new to the genre of jazz music.
You can listen to samples of Jazz Around The World here.
I highly recommend both of these CD's as perfect stocking stuffers for the music lover in your life this Christmas!
