As I began to read this book I felt that I was missing something. The characters would mention previous situations and experiences and only then did I realize this was actually a sequel. After realizing this, I had no problem keeping up with the lives of all the characters involved in Songs of Deliverance. Though this book is stated to be a "stand alone book", I do suggest reading the first book, Rhythms of Grace, so that you will get an overview of the relationship dynamics, etc and not have to spend the first part of the book being confused:)
That said, this book was very well written, and I was immersed in the lives of all the characters involved. Through Griffith's writing style, I experienced almost every emotion known to man. There was anger, love, bitterness, sadness, and sheer joy and worship as I have never experienced before in a novel.
This book takes the reader on the spiritual journey of a wonderful group of people, and I promise you that you will relate to at least one of the characters. We are all on a journey and God will take us through the journey, if only we let Him. Its our journey (especially the trials) that make us most dependent on the Lord. That is what He wants, and that is the message I feel Marilynn Griffith was trying to convey through Songs of Deliverance. We cannot do things on our own. I highly recommend this book!
