Put On Your Crown: Book Review & Giveaway

About The Book:

Modeled after Maria Shriver's Just Who Will You Be, Queen Latifah's goal with Put On Your Crown is to help young women build a strong sense of self-esteem. A US Dept. of Justice survey found that females ages 16-24 are more vulnerable to partner violence than any other group, almost triple the national average. Cases like Chris Brown's assault on pop star Rihanna showed an ugly side of adolescent life. However, Queen Latifah has always been a shining example of a woman happy with herself and unwilling to compromise to fit into the "hollywood ideal" of what a confident beautiful woman should look like.

About The Author:

Queen Latifah was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey. The Queen got her first break in music when a demo tape featuring one of her raps made its way to Tommy Boy Records. She was signed and immediately became a hit. She won the Best New Artist Award in 1990 for her album "All Hail the Queen" which also went platinum. The second single from the album, "Ladies First," was eventually named by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock 'n' Roll.

By the time her second album "Nature of a Sista'" came out in 1991, Queen Latifah had begun investing in small businesses in her neighborhood, and acting both in television and movies. After the death of her brother and a soured deal with Tommy Boy, The Queen released her third album, "Black Reign", and founded Flavor Unit Records and Management. She also landed a regular spot on Living Single and went on to star in a plethora of feature films including: Set It Off, The Perfect Holiday, Taxi, and Bringing Down the House.

My Review:

I have always admired Queen Latifah for her boldness and confidence! She is an inspiration to all women! So when I was given a chance to review Put On Your Crown: Life-Changing Moments On The Path To Queendom", I jumped at it. I was not disappointed. Latifah takes you on her life journey and all the lessons she has learned on the way about topics such as money, relationships, family, and religion. She does not sugar coat her thoughts, and because of that, she really got under my skin about topics like self-confidence.

Here are the topics Queen Latifah talks about in Put On Your Crown:

1. Success - Sometimes it comes in second, third, and fourth acts
2. Beauty - Diversity is beauty. Women come in all shapes and sizes
3. Money - Treat it with respect, but don't live for it
4. Love - Be open to it. Find a loving mentor, like Mom, and let her guide you.
5. Fear - Never let it hold you back. Have just enough to be aware.
6. Loss - This too shall pass, if you keep the faith.
7. Strength - Set your boundaries, and learn from the power of "no"
8. Joy - Celebrate every moment as if it were your last.

My favorite part of the book was her discussions on Hollywood's view that all women need to be skinny to be beautiful. Latifah has proven that this is not the case. She is a beautiful plus-sized woman who is very successful in movies and music. I love that when she decided to get healthy and loss weight it was not because "Hollywood wanted her to, but that she wanted to" (paraphrase).

I loved this book! It is well written and very easy to read, which is perfect for the 16-24 demographic it is designed for.

I love that Latifah holds her head high, and goes for the gold in everything she does, with a new found confidence that despite being rocked, she has never lost. This line from the very end of the book summarizes the book perfectly:

"Celebrate. Make every moment count. Walk tall. Wear your crown with pride"
Queen Latifah

I believe this book is the perfect gift for any woman (young or old) in your life. It would make a great graduation gift for any young lady.

  12. I would like to read about Queen Latifah's views as I find her to be a very confident in her body and in her thoughts on life. I could use a little dose of reestablishing my own self confidence. It is wonderful that she is addressing this age group as so much is happening in a young girl's life during this time period.
