Soul Custody: A Book Review

About The Book:

Soul Custody calls readers to pay attention to the state of their soul-and free it to thrive.

Every day, inner and outer violence ravages the soul, leaving us weak, fearful, and malnourished. In Soul Custody, Stephen W. Smith presents eight choices to help readers reclaim custody of their one and only life-choices about silence, community, vocation, honoring the body, finding one's true self, and more. As Smith reminds readers, allowing God to shape the soul leads to the deep, full, and satisfying life that God had in mind all along.

This is not a self-help book. It is not a book of easy steps to a happy life. It is an invitation to the life God dreams for each of His children. It is a call to start living-to let the soul wake up to life as God intended.

About The Author:

Stephen W. Smith is the co-founder and spiritual director of The Potter's Inn Ministry, a group and retreat devoted to encouraging spiritual development. He is a developer of The Transformation of a Man's Heart series (InterVarsity Press). Stephen lives with his wife, Gwen, in Colorado.

My Review:

For years I have been drawn to typical "self help" books written from a Christian perspective. When I was approached about reading Soul Custody: Choosing To Care For The One And Only You, I thought that was what this book would be. It is, but it is so much more.

You won't find an "how to" list to become a better you, but you will dig deep and discover that even though the journey of life can be difficult we cannot let it destroy us, as often times happens. Smith brings through the book in an easy to read and understand fashion, taking you through subject such as friendships, the sabbath, our body, stress, and being still. As you read this book you will be reminded that taking care of our soul is just as important as taking care our minds and bodies. You will be reminded to take time, prioritize, and be still and as we do that we will grow deeper in our relationship with God! Each chapter starts with scripture references and ends with a set of questions that could be utilized through group or personal studies, book clubs, Bible Study groups or in a Sunday School setting!

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!
