My ABC Bible Verses: A Book Review
About The Book:
Thy Word have I hid in my heart that I might not sin against thee. --Psalm 119:11
Knowing the Bible can help you know God better. Here is a colorful, story-filled way for even the youngest child to take God's Word to heart--and learn the alphabet too!
Presented in an easy-to-use story format that applies individual Bible verses to real-life situations, this illustrated book for 3- to 7-year-olds is perfect for reading to your children or grandchildren, and great for use in churches, Christian schools, Bible clubs, or home schools. It can also be easily adapted for family devotions with young children.
The ABCs are building blocks to your child's formal education. And these verses are the building blocks of the soul--the building blocks that can lead to eternal life.
About The Author:
Susan Hunt is a mother and grandmother, a pastor’s wife, and the former Director of Women’s Ministries for the Presbyterian Church in America. Holding a degree in Christian education from Columbia Theological Seminary, she has written a number of books, including several by Crossway.
My Review:
This is the absolute cutest book ever! Each letter of the alphabet has a corresponding Bible verse and a little, developmentally appropriate devotional set on two pages per letter. It includes a devotion, Let's Talk (with questions which promote discussion between parents and children) and Let's Pray (a sentence prayer to end each page).
The format is very easy to read and would be fantastic for any family, but in particular those who homeschool, and want to mix Bible and Letter learning times! My three year old loves this book and already has learned three verses from it, including Phillipians 4:13 ("I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength), Psalm 118:1 (Oh, give thanks to the Lord, for He is good), and Psalm 147:1 (Praise the Lord! For it is good to sing praises to our God). She is also learning what behavior is most desirable by mommy and daddy and God! She asks for this book to be read regularly and is becoming a family favorite!
The devotionals are short, only a few paragraphs and can easily be adapted to meet the developmental needs of individual children and family's. The illustrations are fun and cute!
This would make a fantastic baby gift, Christmas or Birthday gifts for children of all ages! I highly recommend it!
BUY IT: You can purchase My ABC Bible Verses by Susan Hunt at your local Christian Bookseller. It is also available online through Crossway Publishers.
***Thank you to Crossway for providing me with a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for a review on this blog. All opinions are my own, and have not been influenced by outside sources***

Anamnesis: A Book Review
About The Book:
Jesus is one of us and He lives amongst us, adapting to the times and doing good by running a huge corporation. When the corporation is starting to show signs of change and its CEO disappears, two unsuspecting friends get pulled into a rescue mission they are not prepared for. As they negotiate their way through the cold hallways of the company and use magic from ancient times, they come to find the ultimate meaning of their life. The story is funny, tragic, and absolutely original.
About The Author:
I was born and raised in Romania and moved to the US in 1997. I have been writing ever since I can remember. I published several poems, stories and a novel in Romania; and two novels in the US.
I have a publishing company (www.BetterKarmaPublishing.com) and I am always looking for great writers to network with and help publish their books.
I am married and have a wonderful son. The family is completed by our two adorable cats.
My Review:
I have previously mentioned that one of my goals is to read books from new-to-me authors! Anamnesis by Zorina Alliata definitely fits in that category. This book was very easy to read and revolved around two main characters, as well as a few other characters. The main idea of the book is man's search for life meaning, and through this search the two characters end up involved in solving their own personal mysteries. I do not want to give much more away of the plot, but suffice it to say that this is a good read and I highly recommend it!

The Busy Mom's Guide To Bible Study: A Book Review
About The Book:
A Bible Study Plan for the Busiest Mom!
The Busy Mom's Guide to Bible Study is an amazing Bible study tool specifically aimed at moms. What makes it so remarkable is the way author Lisa Whelchel has packed twenty solid Bible study tools into a five-day-a-week, fifteen-minute-a-day, anybody-can-do-it plan.
Not only is this plan doable, it's satisfying. As a busy mom, you give of yourself all day long –often with no way to refresh and replenish the cravings of your own soul. But this simple three-month, come-along-beside-you guide will take you deep into the Word, nourishing your heart and soul. And in just three months, you will be a changed woman – changed by the power of God's Word in you
.
About The Author:
Lisa Whelchel, best known for her long standing role as "Blair" in the television series, The Facts of Life, is a wife and a home schooling mother of three children. She has appeared in several feature films and is an author, vocalist, Grammy nominated songwriter, and an inspirational speaker at churches and conferences nationwide.
My Review:
The only other book by Lisa Whelchel that I have previously read is Creative Correction, and so when the opportunity arose to review The Busy Mom's Guide to Bible Study, I jumped at the chance. This book is set up to be a three month introduction to studying your Bible. In month one, Whelchel guides the reader through 20 tools to really dig deep into your Bible and get the most out of your precious Bible reading time!
The next month, she introduces 22 new tools, but lets the reader do the studying more independently, with a few tips and ideas throughout. Finally, in the third month, the reader is given three Bible Study techniques and then you select which one you want to use for that day, and record what "treasures" you discovered in your study time.
I really enjoyed reading through this book and loved all the tools she suggested, including using study Bibles, commentaries, Bible Dictionaries (and regular ones too), memorizing scripture (using cue cards), studying with parallel translations, and praying the scriptures. The one tool that I would like to share with you, my readers is the Five W's and an H:
BUY IT: You can purchase The Busy Mom's Guide To Bible Study directly from Lisa Whelchel's official website. It is also available at Howard Publishing.

Who - who is the main character? Who are secondary characters? To Whom is the main character talking?
What? - is the plot of the passage? What is happening? Is it a specific event?
When? - does the specific event in the passage occur (history, time, chronology, time in characters life)?
Where? - Where did (does, or will) the event occur? Think about the setting, both broad and specific
Why? - why is this happening? Why is this being said? Why did God include this passage in the Bible?
How? - How did (does, or will) this happen? How did (does, or will) this affect the characters, or your life? (p.12 and 13)
If you want to read a book that will help you dig deeper in your Christian journey, or you just want a refresher on the tools that will help you in the journey, I highly recommend this book. Though the title refers to the book as being for the "busy mom" I firmly believe that all women (and men) would get benefit from reading this book! Its a small book in size and that makes it perfect for a purse, carry on bag and diaper bags too!
Not only do I recommend this book, but also Whelchel has also written The Busy Mom's Guide To Prayer, and The Busy Mom's Guide To Wisdom, and The Busy Grandma's Guide To Prayer!

Hunter's Moon: A Book Review
About The Book:
Don Hoesel is a Web site designer for a Medicare carrier in Nashville, TN. He has a BA in Mass Communication from Taylor University and has published short fiction in Relief Journal. He lives in Spring Hill, Tennessee, with his wife and two children. Elisha's Bones is his first novel.
My Review:
I loved this book. It was very well written and the characters were developed in a strong manner. Although the book started out slowly, I did not mind as it gave me a nice introduction to the character's background. The mystery involved in this book really kept me entertained and I love that the author covered so many topics throughout the book, for example, domestic violence and its consequences, anger and bitterness. But to me the most important theme in the book is the importance of forgiveness. This is the first time I had heard of Don Hoesel, but after reading Hunter's Moon, I will definitely be reading Elisha's Bones!
I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up.
BUY IT: You can purchase Hunter's Moon by Don Hoesel directly online through Bethany House Publishers, available February 2010.

Every family has secrets.
Few will go as far as the Baxters to keep them.
Bestselling novelist CJ Baxter has made a career out of writing hard-hitting stories ripped from his own life. Still there's one story from his past he's never told. One secret that's remained buried for decades.
Now, seventeen years after swearing he'd never return, CJ is headed back to Adelia, NY. His life in Tennessee has fallen to pieces, his grandfather is dying, and CJ can no longer run from the past.
With Graham Baxter, CJ's brother, running for Senate, a black sheep digging up old family secrets is the last thing the family and campaign can afford. CJ soon discovers that blood may be thicker than water, but it's no match for power and money.
There are wounds even time cannot heal.

Every move I make feels

My faith is shaking
But I gotta keep tryin'
Gotta keep my head held high
Theres always gonna be another mountain
I'm always gonna wanna make it move
Always gonna be a up-hill battle
Sometimes i'm gonna have to lose
Ain't about how fast I get there
Ain't about whats waiting on the other side
Its the climb
The struggles I'm facing
The chances I'm taking
Sometimes might knock me down
But, No, I'm not breaking
I may not know it
But these are the moments that
I'm gonna remember Most, yeah

And, I, I got to be Strong
Just Keep pushing, on

The Shushybye Sleepover Surprise Book & CD Review & Giveaway
About The Book:
The follow-up to the debut SHUSHYBYE bedtime picture storybook, SHUSHYBYE: SLEEPOVER SURPRISE returns readers to the magical land of Shushybye where the Shushies – who live in such villages as Nap Valley and Snore Shore – make dreams for children.
Included inside the book – which features a glow-in-the-dark front cover – is a ReadAlong/SingAlong audio CD that includes the popular “Shushybye Blues” song and two other original songs, along with the entire story narrated by our official Shushybye storyteller, XM KiDS’ morning personality Kenny Curtis (and the voices of all the Shushies).
I am a huge advocate for early literacy and because of that I am happy to say that my children, ages three and 19 months, love to have books read to them. They also love looking at books and "read" to one another! I am always on the hunt for great books and I loved Shushybye Sleepover Surprise.
Recently, my husband and I have been struggling with bedtime with my older daughter. We have always told her to think of something wonderful to dream about and tell us what that is. I love that his book reinforces the concept of dreaming and that a child needs to fall asleep first before dreaming! The illustrations are absolutely adorable and its a very easy to read book! Though there is alot of words on each page (at least for a toddler and early preschooler), the book can be very easily adapted to fit the age of your child, and its great for the new year to practice reading skills on!
The CD is wonderful, and contains songs and read along features that both children and adults will enjoy! One other great feature of this book is that both the front and back covers glow in the dark! My three year loves this and has taken the book to bed with her just so she "can watch it shine"!
I love that the Shushabye Dream Band also tours....you can check out here to see if they will be in a city near you!
I highly recommend this book and CD set. It would be a wonderful gift for a new baby, or even a birthday gift for the special child in your life!

In SHUSHYBYE: SLEEPOVER SURPRISE, Shushy best friends SNOOZLES, DOZIE and ZEEZ discover there doesn’t have to be an occasion to be nice to your friends. After DOZIE bakes SNOOZLES and ZEEZ one of her famous Sky Pies, the two Shushies think of a special way to let her know how much they care about her friendship. Together, they plan a concert at The House of Snooze in DOZIE’s honor. The book also introduces a pair of very comical Shushies, Snort and Wheez who drive the Shushybye Dream Van to pick up all the completed Dream Boxes and bring them to Conductor McCloud. It’s an important job.
The popular SHUSHYBYE franchise is headed by Shushybye Baby, a live action and animated television series airing daily on the national (and international) children’s channel BabyFirstTV as well as on Comcast Cable - the #1 Video On Demand network in the country. Plus, XM Satellite Radio’s award-winning children’s channel XM KiDS (Channel 116) presents “The Shushybye Show on XM KiDS’ which airs twice daily.
In addition to the SHUSHYBYE TV and radio shows and St. Martin’s Press picture storybooks, SHUSHYBYE also boasts a critically-acclaimed series of Shushybye Dream Band music CD’s from KOCH Records, award-winning concert DVD’s from PBS Video, sleepwear from Adorable Kids, Inc. and the beloved line of plush dolls from The Shushybye Company. The newest book, SHUSHYBYE: SLEEPOVER SURPRISE is a wonderful addition to the established franchise, giving parents another loving way to ease their preschoolers into bedtime.
Drawn in an accessible cartoon style, SHUSHYBYE: SLEEPOVER SURPRISE will spark the imagination of children who wonder where dreams come from. Toddlers and preschoolers will love the colorful land of Shushybye and the cuddly, pajama-clad Shushies, who, supported by catchy and spirited rock music and lullabies – and enticing glow-in-the-dark cover - will smoothly shepherd them towards sleep—and towards their Shushybye Dream Boxes!

The Things That Keep Us Here Blog Tour
Ann Brooks never thought she’d have to answer that question. Then she found her limits tested by a crisis no one could prevent. Now, as her neighborhood descends into panic, she must make tough choices to protect everyone she loves from a threat she cannot even see. In this chillingly urgent novel, Carla Buckley confronts us with the terrifying decisions we are forced to make when ordinary life changes overnight.
A year ago, Ann and Peter Brooks were just another unhappily married couple trying–and failing–to keep their relationship together while they raised two young daughters. Now the world around them is about to be shaken as Peter, a university researcher, comes to a startling realization: A virulent pandemic has made the terrible leap across the ocean to America’s heartland.
And it is killing fifty out of every hundred people it touches.
As their town goes into lockdown, Peter is forced to return home–with his beautiful graduate assistant. But the Brookses’ safe suburban world is no longer the refuge it once was. Food grows scarce, and neighbor turns against neighbor in grocery stores and at gas pumps. And then a winter storm strikes, and the community is left huddling in the dark.
Trapped inside the house she once called home, Ann Brooks must make life-or-death decisions in an environment where opening a door to a neighbor could threaten all the things she holds dear.
Carla Buckley’s poignant debut raises important questions to which there are no easy answers, in an emotionally riveting tale of one family facing unimaginable stress.
Carla Buckley was born in Washington, D.C. She has worked in a variety of jobs, including a stint as an assistant press secretary for a U.S. senator, an analyst with the Smithsonian Institution, and a technical writer for a defense contractor. She currently lives in Ohio with her husband and children. The Things That Keep Us Here is her first novel. Bantam Dell will publish Buckley’s next novel in 2011. This was the first time I have heard of Carla Buckley and after reading The Things That Keep Us Here, I was so impressed!
The book follows a family during a flu pandemic (H5N1 - avian flu) and throughout the book we see exactly what a parent will do to protect their child. The book was very well written, and the characters very well developed. The book was suspenseful, and keep me from putting it down as I wanted to see how the book come to a close!
The one thing that kept going through my head is how eerily similar some of the events in the book are to the recent H1N1 outbreak that has occured throughout the world. This book was very thought-provoking and made me realize that my family is so not ready for something like this, should it ever happen in my area. I love the themes of family devotion, and the strength of the human spirit!
I highly recommend this book, and I cannot wait to see what Buckley's next works will be like!

Red Light, Green Light, Eat Right: A Book Review
About The Book:
In her book, Dr. Dolgoff uses the power of play to get more families excited about healthy eating. The book teaches readers how to make healthy choices based on the principles of the traffic light: green light foods are nutritious, yellow light foods are eaten in moderation, and red light foods are occasional treats. Snacks and meals are designed to ensure that children get the nutrients they need to not only lose or maintain weight, but to grow strong, healthy bodies.
Dr. Dolgoff also discusses the important issues surrounding child and adolescent weight management and gives tips on how to follow the program while dining out, going to birthday parties, and celebrating the holidays. Complete with sample menus, recipes, 50 fun activities that count as exercise, and an index of more than 1,000 color-coded foods, Red Light, Green Light, Eat Right is great on its own or as a companion to the online program.

My Review:
I love to cook, and for the most part I believe that I cook and bake foods that are pretty healthy. My family and I try to stay away from high-fat, low-nutrition foods and stick to healthy, whole grain, fruits and veggies. However, since being diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in January, I have been on a mission to find some great menu ideas that will not only incorporate easy to make and yummy foods, but also be fun for my two children, ages three and 19 months. With Red Light, Green Light, Eat Right I have definitely found a wonderful resource.
This book is packed with wonderful food ideas and menu plans for two weeks that will not only nourish your children in a balanced way, but will teach your child to make good food choices. The book is designed to help already overweight childre, but can be used for all children, in my opinion. I believe that if these proper nutrition and eating methods were taught to children, there would be a much lower rate of childhood obesity and weight related health problems with our children today.
I love the whole premise of the red, yellow and green light correspondence with the healthy and non-healthy foods. In my opinion, the more fun you make meal time, the better success one will have in getting children (of any age) to start on the right track of healthy eating!
The methods and ideas in this book are not strictly for overweight children, however. I was able to use a lot of the tips and ideas when deciding meals for my entire family (me included). Some of the recipes included are: Shrimp and Pasta Dinner, Potato Wedges, Baked Fish Sticks, Maple Roasted Sweet Potatoes, and Low Fat Pumpkin Muffins! I personally made the muffins and they were so yummy! Even my three year old loved them (and they are a yellow item on the traffic light, so of course you can't overdo eating them!)
Many adults make the New Year's resolutions to get back on track with diet and exercise! Well, since we are only two months into 2010, add your kids to your resolution and help them be as healthy as they can be!!!
I highly recommend this book!

My Review:
I really enjoyed reading this book as it gave a very real, yet honest, of life as a high school student who is trying to turn her life around. It chronicles the life of Skylar Hoyt and throughout the book you see how Skylar learns to deepen her faith and become a young woman of God!
This book has the wonderful message for young people that you do not have to just go with the crowd to be popular. God loves you and when you follow Him, He will guide you through whatever life brings your way. Life will not always be easy, but with Him in it, the journey will be a little easier.
The bookThis would be a wonderful book for any young adult in your life and I highly recommend it.

Try Darkness Review & Giveaway
About The Book:
Ty Buchanan is living on the peaceful grounds of St. Monica's, far away from the glamorous life he led as a rising trial lawyer for a big L.A. firm. Recovering from the death of his fiancée and a false accusation of murder, Buchanan has found his previous ambitions unrewarding. Now he prefers offering legal services to the poor and the under-represented, from his "office" at local coffee bar The Freudian Sip. A mysterious woman with a six year old daughter comes to him for help. She's being illegally evicted from a downtown transient hotel, an interest represented by his old law firm and former best friend, Al Bradshaw. Buchanan won't back down. He's going to fight for the woman's rights.
But then she ends up dead, and the case moves from the courtroom to the streets. Determined to find the killer and protect the little girl, who has no last name and no other family, Buchanan finds he must depend on skills he never needed in the employ of a civil law firm.

My Review:
I have never read any of James Scott Bell's previous books, so had nothing to compare Try Darkness with, but I was very impressed with this book.
I love mystery/suspense book and this was definitely one of the best I have read in the last few months (and I have read alot!). The writing is very easy to read and this book can be very quickly read (I read it in about 3 days, but had I really sat down with no distractions, it would have been less).
The characters are very real-to-life, as is the storyline. The book took a little bit for me to get into but overall, I was intrigued by the character of Ty Buchannan and will definitely go back to read about him in the other books in this series. The book kept me guessing with all the suspense and curveballs, and if you like suspense novels, then you will love Try Darkness!!!
I highly recommend it!
