The Reluctant Entertainer: A Book Review

About The Book:

True hospitality is not about being perfect, cooking a fancy meal, or spending a lot of money. Rather, it's about an open door and an open heart. Popular blogger Sandy Coughlin offers a simple but savvy approach to help women break free of the anxieties that keep them from opening their homes. Emphasizing the forgotten goal of entertaining--connecting deeply with others--she shows how women can use the gifts and talents God gave them to reach out in love.

About The Author:

Sandy Coughlin loves hospitality, cooking, and opening her home to others with her husband and three growing teenagers. She's the author of The Reluctant Entertainer and co-author (with her husband Paul) ofMarried...But Not Engaged. She's been featured on numerous media outlets including Moody's Midday Connection, Focus on the Family, The 700 Club, and Library Journal. You can find Sandy's blog about simple but savvy entertaining, as well as the benefits to imperfect living, at ReluctantEntertainer.com

My Review:

I love having people come into my home and visit, but I am the first to admit that I am no Martha Stewart! And honestly, I do not want to be! When the hospitality comes to my mind, I think of have a few close friends or family in my home, sitting around my living room, or kitchen table and having a fun time playing games or chatting! I don't want my time of socializing to be spent with worrying if my home is clean enough (with two children under 5 years, is it ever going to be clean enough!), or if I have the correct silverware set up, or the right appetizers! I want the time to be spent fellowshipping and having fun in a relaxed setting!

In her book, The Reluctant Entertainer, Coughlin shows the reader how to be real in your hospitality. I love that! Being real is my goal! She has some fantastic tips to make entertaining so much easier. From what you should always stock in your kitchen, in order to open your home at any given time, to delicious sounding recipes, to ways to entertain inexpensively on a real budget!

On point Coughlin makes that I loved was this:

" ...although food is important, it's not what really makes entertaining successful. She taught me that what really matters is the grace you extend to those around your table, no matter what their background, religion, or beliefs. This approach removes rigidity and expectations and spreads sharing, loving, patience, and understanding - all attributes of a gracious lifestyle.

And more times than not, this gracious attitude shows itself at the dinner table, where people feel free to open up and share their joys as well as their struggles. We remember that God is gracious with us, so we should be gracious to one another" (p. 119)

One recipe I would like to share with you from The Reluctant Entertainer is this! My family loved it:

Zucchini Noodles With Parmesan Sauce

Zucchini Noodles:

12 small zucchini
2 TBSP olive oil
salt and pepper

Parmesan Sauce:

10 garlic cloves, pressed
2 TBSP olive oil
2 cups whipping cream
1 cup fresh, grated Parmesan cheese
salt and pepper

With a potato peeler, create long, wide zucchini ribbons by starting at the top of each zucchini and peeling down the length of it. Turn after each peel to get all the green part first.  Continue peeling until the center portion becomes too thin, and discard the rest.

Heat a large skillet on medium-high and add the olive oil and zucchini noodles. Saute for apporximently 2 to 3 minutes. Do not overcook ro they will become soggy. Add salt and pepper to taste.

In a saucepan, saute the pressed garlic in olive oil. Add the whipping cream, turn the heat to high, and stir until it begins to boil. Then turn the heat down to low and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and stir in the  Parmesan Cheese, salt and pepper. Pour over the "noodles" and serve

Variation: Substitute any kind of pasta for the zucchini noodles.  Serves 6 to 8 people
(p. 54)

If you want some fantastic tips, recipes and encouragement as you entertain as the Lord wants, then you must read this book! Her website is also a HUGE wealth of great information and encouragement!

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!

Needless to say, I am going back to the comfort, easy recipes for the next bit while our Fall routines get into place! So here is the first menu for Autumn!

Masquerade: Book Review

About The Book:

They risk it all for adventure and romance,
but find that love only flourishes in truth...

1886. Charlotte Gleason embarks from England with conflicting emotions. She is headed for New York to marry one of America's wealthiest heirs--a man she has never even met. When her doubts gain the upper hand, she swaps identities with her maid Dora. She wants a chance at "real life," even if it means giving up financial security. For Charlotte, it's a risk she's willing to take. But what begins as the whim of a spoiled rich girl becomes a test of survival beyond her blackest nightmare.

For Dora, it's the chance of a lifetime. She is thrust into a fairy tale amid ball gowns and lavish mansions, yet is tormented by the possibility of discovery--and humiliation. And what of the man who believes she is indeed his intended? Is this what her heart truly longs for?

BEHIND THE STORY: This book gave me a chance to incorporate all the girlie things I love: gorgeous dresses, balls, opulent mansions, and romance. It's as if I took all the scenes I would want to read and put them together. Also, to whet my fashion passion, every time I had my characters wear a gown, I found a real picture from a period publication and have included eight of those illustrations in the back of the book. Enjoy the luscious gowns while you're wearing your comfy jeans!

About The Author:

Nancy Moser is the author of three inspirational humor books and a eighteen novels, including Mozart's Sister, Just Jane, and Time Lottery, a Christy Award winner. She is an inspirational speaker, giving seminars around the country. She has earned a degree in architecture; run a business with her husband; traveled extensively in Europe; and has performed in various theaters, symphonies, and choirs. She and her husband have three grown children and make their home in the Midwest. Read more about her books at www.nancymoser.com.

My Review:

I knew the first time that I read Nancy Moser's work in The Mustard Seed Series, and The Seat Beside Me that I had found a favorite author. The most recent release by Moser, Masquerade, does not disappoint.

Although I am very content with my life, I have often wondered just what it would be like to life like "the other half". You know, the wealthy and famous folks. Well, I know that I am where I am supposed to be and doing what God wants me to do. Therefore, I can live vicariously through Moser's novel of switching identities! This is a historical version of Freaky Friday or 13 Going on 30!

I love Christian Historical Fiction, and Moser's writing bring you to a whole different world full of beautiful gowns, servants, royalty and  romance! This was a very easy and quick read  and I absolutely loved the attention that Moser paid to be exquistitely historically accurate!

If you love historical fiction, you will absolutely love this book!

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!

This is the first of Gary E. Parker's books I have read and I was amazed!

If you are looking for a fast paced, suspenseful action novel, then you have to read The Constantine Conspiracy. It is full of religious and historical information that makes for a great read! Be Compassionate: Book Review

About The Book:

The life and ministry of Christ was marked by His overwhelming compassion for people. And His heart is the same today. As believers, we are called to be the hands and feet of Christ, and extend His extravagant love to a broken world. Based on the book of Luke, this study examines the very heartbeat of our Savior, and explores how Jesus connected with hurting people in an authentic and powerful way.

Part of Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe's best-selling "BE" commentary series, BE Compassionatehas now been updated with study questions and a new introduction by Ken Baugh. A respected pastor and Bible teacher, Dr. Wiersbe explores the compassionate life of Jesus. Filled with moving examples of Christ's ministry to people of all backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs, this study will inspire you to share His love with the world around you.

About The Author:

Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe is an internationally known Bible teacher and the former pastor of three churches, including the Moody Church in Chicago. For ten years he served as general director and Bible teacher for the Back to the Bible radio broadcast. Dr. Wiersbe has written more than 150 books, including the popular "Be" series of expositional Bible studies, which has sold more than four million copies. In 2002, he was awarded the Jordon Lifetime Achievement Award by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. He and his wife, Betty, live in Lincoln, Nebraska.

My Review:

The Be Series by Warren Wiersbe has been available for readers for over thirty years and has been recently revised. I have read Wiesbe's works previously as a Bible College student and have been a fan ever since. His work is very deep and detailed, and if you are looking to get deeper in your studies of God's Word, then you must read and apply Wiersbe's books.

Be Compassionate covers the first 13 chapters of Luke, and shows us how to be compassionate as Jesus was. Wiersbe writes in an easy to read and well organized manner, so that whether you are a new Christian or you have a PhD in Pastoral Ministry you will not only understand his commentaries, you will find it very easy to apply to your life.

Here are a couple of great quotes from Be Compassionate by Warren Wiersbe (and there are so many!)

"There are no shortcuts in the Christian life, and there is no easy way  to spiritual maturity. If the perfect Son of God had to hang on a tree before He could sit on the throne, then His disciples should not expect an easier way of life"(Luke 9:22-26; Acts 24:22) (p. 52, 53)

"Worship is at the heart of all that we are and all that we do in the Christian life. It is important that we be busy ambassadors, taking the message of the gospel to lost souls. It is also essential to be merciful Samaritans, seeking to help exploited and hurting people who need God's mercy. But before we can represent Christ as we should, or imitate Him in our caring ministry, we must spend time with HIm and learn from Him. We must "take time to be holy" (p. 139)

I have learned a lot from listening to Warren Wiersbe on Back To The Bible, and also from reading his many books, and I am definitely looking forward to reading more of the Be Series! This is definitely a commentary set I highly recommend!

Rise Up and Sing: Book Review

About The Book:

An essential, practical handbook that equips female worshippers to lead worship, work with musicians, pastor a worship team, write songs, and work effectively with their pastor.

For women who are called to lead worship-or think they might be-worship leader Lex Buckley offers this essential handbook. Buckley shares from the Bible and from her heart to encourage, empower, and equip female worship leaders, urging them to be themselves and lead with confidence, secure in the knowledge that there is a role for women to lead worship and pastor a worship team. Packed with practical tips and featuring advice from outstanding female leaders and songwriters, such as Beth Redman, Christy Nockels, and Kathryn Scott, this book fills an empty niche, providing aspiring worship leaders with the female friends and mentors they need and probably don't have

About The Author:

Native Australian Lex Buckley, an experienced lead worshpper, and her husband, Paul, head the worship department at River City Church in Jacksonville, Florida. Lex has also served as a Soul Survivor worship pastor in the UK, sung on several albums, and released her own album, Through the Valley. She is the happy mother of baby Bella.

Read Lex's blog and interact with her at www.FemaleWorshipLeader.com.

My Review:

A very insightful resource for all women in church ministry, whether in lay or full time ministry. You will be encouraged throughout the reading of Rise Up and Sing by the author and  top worship industry names like Beth Redman and Christy Nockels. I have never seen a book about worship leading specifically for women, so was very happy to see this come available.

This book gives the reader a quick rundown of what is needed to have a successful Worship Ministry. It is very well written, and has topics such as song writing, putting together a worship team, and the administration jobs required by a worship leader.

One very encouraging passage is found in the very last chapter:

"The song that God has placed on your heart to sing is going to be unique. Ask Him what it is. Listen to what stirs in your heart. Is your passion to see justice? Or is it to tell the world of His majesty and awesomeness? Whatever it is, go for it! Sing it out, write those songs! The Creator has created you to reflect who He is in a way that no one else can. Be bold. Find your confidence in Him. Remember that no matter what, the King loves you and delights in you, and He longs to see you, His daughter, be all that He created you to be. Cling to Christ, for....

It's in Christ that w4e find out who we are and what we are living for. Long before we first heard of Christ and got our hopes up, he had his eye on us, had designs on us for glorious living, part of the overall purpose he is working out in everything and everyone (Ephesians 1:11-12 The Message)"   (p. 158-159)

I highly recommend this book for all female (and male) worship leaders. You will be challenged, and encouraged as you read this book!

I give this a huge thumbs up!

BUY IT: You can purchase Rise Up and Sing online here, directly through David C. Cook - it is also available through your favorite local Christian bookseller.

Rock N Learn: Getting Ready For Kindergarten Review and Giveaway

My oldest daughter (almost 4) will be starting Pre-Kindergarten in September, as well as homeschooling with Before Five In A Row (B4FIAR), and loves to learn! We are always working in workbooks and playing with preschool activity bags, educational toys and games, and reading! I love that she has such a love for learning and pray this love will last for the rest of her life.

Recently we had a chance to review Rock N Learn: Phonics Volume 1 and we have been viewing it regularly ever since! I am very excited to share another great Rock N Learn DVD with you all! Getting Ready For Kindergarten is a fun way to teach young children all they need to know for school!

About Rock N Learn:

Rock ’N Learn, Inc. began as an idea that would help children learn by putting educational material to music with a current sound—the kind of music that kids enjoy and find motivating. Now with over 50 products, we have sold millions of audio/book and video programs to teachers and parents throughout the United States, Canada, and other countries.
Rock ’N Learn programs help students learn math, phonics, reading, early childhood, social studies, Spanish, test-taking strategies, writing, and science. Our DVDs incorporate cool music with exciting, colorful imagery.
Headquartered in Conroe, Texas, just north of Houston, Rock ’N Learn is owned and operated by its founders, Richard and Brad Caudle. Our primary warehouse is in North Carolina.
Working as a school psychologist in 1986, Richard saw the need for multi-sensory learning programs using the styles of music that kids love. He consulted his younger brother Brad, an accomplished musician, to record their first program to help kids learn multiplication facts. Strong sales of this recording in the school specialty and book markets led to other programs and the start of a successful company.
Richard and Brad never varied from their number one goal of providing children with programs that would make learning easier as well as fun. Brad’s wife Melissa, a former second-grade teacher, writes material and coordinates educational research for Rock ’N Learn. Richard’s wife, Kathie, manages sales and marketing.
Rock ’N Learn programs have received numerous awards such as Dr. Toy, Parents’ Choice, iParenting, National Parenting Publications, Learning Magazine Teachers’ Choice, Early Childhood News, National Parenting Center, and Parent's Guide to Children’s Media. Our programs lead in the areas of quality and customer satisfaction based on surveys of school supply stores.
As documented in hundreds of testimonials received each year, Rock ’N Learn programs work. The overwhelmingly positive response from parents, teachers, and kids generates tremendous word-of-mouth support. By consulting with educators and featuring talented vocalists and performers, Rock ’N Learn will continue to develop quality audio and video programs that hold interest and help kids learn.

About Getting Ready For Kindergarten:

Getting Ready for Kindergarten DVD—works well for preschool instruction in daycare or at home. The fun, animated characters Jill and Joey make it easy for your child to get involved and practice right along with the video.
Getting Ready for Kindergarten includes plenty of real children to help demonstrate the skills covered. We consulted with leading kindergarten teachers to be certain we covered those skills that would help ensure success in kindergarten.
Getting Ready for Kindergarten covers these skills
buttoning

• zipping • colors • counting • tying shoes with "bunny ear method" • following directions • sequencing • sorting • neatness and organizing • asking permission • walking in a line • size comparisons • drawing a person • sharing • listening comprehension • letter recognition • number recognition • holding a pencil • printing letters and numbers • shapes • patterns • left/right directions

Getting Ready for Kindergarten is also a perfect supplement for kindergarten teachers to use with students who want to learn to speak English. This makes it an ideal video for ESL instruction as well as kindergarten readiness.
My Review:
I am now the proud owner of two Rock N Learn DVD's and I love them! More importantly, my girls love them! To see them interact with the characters on the screen with the great enthusiasm that they do is so entertaining.

With a running time of 45 minutes, you would think that a two year old would not sit through the entire thing. But you are wrong, mine did! When I tried to take her to get a diaper change, she was so upset! In only viewing Getting Ready For Kindergarten for the last week or so, my almost four year old is already singing along to many of the songs and wants to alway try to tie shoes now. Though she has not mastered that skill quite yet, this DVD will be very instrumental in teaching her to tie shoes when the time comes.

One of the things that I loved best about this DVD is how it integrates animation with real life children! I always prefer real life over animation when teaching young children, and Getting Ready For Kindergarten does this in a great manner!

If you have a child between the ages of 3 and 5 years, Rock N Learn Getting Ready For Kindergarten will be the perfect way to add fun, music and learning to their lives!

I highly recommend this product and give it a huge thumbs up!

Repairing Rainbows: Book Review and Giveaway

About The Book:

A True Story of Family, Tragedy, and Choices.

At thirteen years old, Lynda’s life comes to a disastrous halt when her mother and two younger sisters are killed in a plane crash. Her father, overcome by despair, simply continues to exist, in a state devoid of hope. After burying a wife and two young children at the age of 44, the overwhelming responsibility of raising a daughter alone completely immobilizes him.

Teetering on that tender brink between childhood and adolescence, Lynda faces the responsibility of a father in a complete state of shock, a house to take care of and hundreds of decisions about how to proceed with their shattered lives.

In Repairing Rainbows she candidly describes the agonizing memories, deafening silence and endless hardships that are the fallout of incredible loss. As we follow her through marriage, motherhood and her own spiritual journey, Lynda reveals her complex feelings of hope, anger, pity and determination. Most importantly, she learns the crucial difference between “truly living” and the existence that is so often mistaken for being alive.

A true story, written by a woman whose normal and abundant life hides a terrible past, Repairing Rainbows is loaded with important lessons to help others overcome struggles and obstacles, and fulfill their lives. It is a powerful, captivating, riveting and easy-to-read story that will undoubtedly touch the hearts of its readers.

You can read an excerpt of Repairing Rainbows online here.

About The Author:

Lynda Fishman is a trained clinical social worker who has spent the last 20 years as a Camp Director and has recently opened her own camp, Adventure Valley. She has published articles and training manuals on leadership, teamwork, bullying, trust, childhood health and wellness, communication and customer service. This is her first full-length book.
Lynda lives in Toronto with her husband, Barry. Together they have three grown children, two dogs and two cats. The Fishman family is heavily involved in fundraising and charity events for children dealing with tragedy, cancer or other life-threatening diseases.

My Review:

If you are looking for a book that will take you on a tragic, yet inspiring, journey you have to read Repairing Rainbows by Lynda Fishman. Before you start reading though have a box of tissue with you, they will be needed.

As I read through this book of Lynda's journey through the tragedy of losing her mother and siblings at the tender age of 13, I was so amazed by the strength this young woman had to make the choice to not only move on, but choose life! She shows us, the reader, that it really is a choice when trials come into our lives. We can either sit and wallow in our trials, or, as Lynda did, we can choose life and make the best of a terrible situation and become a stronger person despite it.

In the epilogue of her book, Fishman makes the following statements and I love what she says:

"There's a crucial difference between truly living and the existence that is often mistaken for being alive. At every juncture, I had to decide whether to succumb to or overcome the sorrow. You always have choices. You can give up or you can go on. I chose to go on. I chose life." (p. 258)

"The most meaningful lesson for me has been the importance of focusing on the good, finding the rainbow in every storm. And in that rainbow, there is gratitude and appreciation." (p. 258)

"There's no template to follow that will determine the course of any tragedy and its effects. But the toughest decision people have to make is whether or not they respond to a crisis with hope. It is a choice. Its's a choice about whether you want to live or die. I chose life." (p. 259)

If you are looking for hope and inspiration, even in the midst of trial and tragedy, then you must, no need to, read Repairing Rainbows. I have been very blessed to follow the journey that Lynda Fishman has taken over the last 40 years, through reading this book.

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!
