Then Sings My Soul Saturday

Today is Saturday, and that means it is time for Then Sings My Soul Saturday, hosted by Amy at one of my favorite blogs, Signs, Miracles and Wonders. Today I am reflecting back on my marriage and God's impact on it.

As November 8, 2010 approaches I am brought back to a time 13 years ago when I stood at the front of a church, in front of family and friends and married my Bible College sweetheart. Next to the birth of my daughter's it was the best day of my life.

Fast forward 13 years and it has been a journey to say the least. We have lived in three Provinces in Canada, I survived cancer, infertility and a preemie birth/NICU stay, and many other trials along the way. But by far, the hardest part of the journey has been in the last three years. Until recently, neither of us wanted to admit there was an issue in our marriage but there was. Divorce has never been an option for us, but we were close. Closer than I ever dreamed we would be.

However, God has been faithful, and continues to be faithful. He has helped us realize what we BOTH needed to do to change to make things right. Not just to improve our marriage but restore it and make it thrive. We have made significant changes and are so much better for it. Through the last year I have realized that both my husband and I were on journey's. The only problem was we were travelling separately instead of together.

Now that we have realized this, the journey is filled with less turbulence and more smooth sailing. But it was not without waiting, and as hard as it was, the waiting had to happen.

One thing I have realized is that I would go anywhere with my husband. Despite the valley's and hard times, I am his and he is mine, put together by God 14 years ago, and united in marriage almost 13. Are there parts of the journey I wish we would could have avoided, absolutely. However, it is because of those pit stops along that way that we are who were are: as individuals, as a couple and as a family.

The first song I want to share reminds me that I will go with my husband on this journey of marriage no matter what it brings: good or bad, and that God is with us on that journey.

The second is one that I listened to a lot as I waited for answers about where our marriage was going. I knew that while I waited for healing and reconciliation to occur I still needed to focus on God and my relationship with Him. He brought us together and I knew that He would keep us together as long as both us focused on Him. This journey has been not just  to bring us back to each other, but to bring us back to Him. While we waited for positive changes to occur in our marriage, God was patiently waiting too. I am so glad He has worked through both of us and our marriage.

Finally, the third song is one of our favorites, and quite possibly "our song". It speaks to us on such amazing levels that we can't listen to it without tears.

"It Doesn't Matter What You've Heard, Impossible Is Not A Word, It's Just A Reason Not To Try" Kutless

"I will serve you while I'm waiting, I will worship while I'm waiting...though it's painful, I will wait" John Waller

"No matter how deep a valley you go through, I will go there with you" Steven Curtis Chapman

Thank you Jesus for being there for both of us as we have journey through the first 13 years of marriage and despite the hard time, I am so thankful for all you have taught us, especially in the waiting!"

Power Thoughts: Book Review and Giveaway

About The Book:

Joyce Meyer has a knack for coining phrases - her fans call them "Joyceisms" - and one of her best loved is: "Where the mind goes, the man follows". This was the basis for Battlefield of the Mind, and in POWER THOUGHTS, Joyce brings us to the next level in overcoming negative thinking.

This follow-up to Battlefield of the Mind takes the groundbreaking pri9nciples that have made that book so successful and goes a step futher. While Battlefield of the Mind exposes the truth that we can choose what we think about and learn to think in line with God's Word, POWER THOUGHTS shows us how to accomplish this on a daily basis.

Get equipped with twelve strategies that provide the antidote for every battle in your mind. With POWER THOUGHTS, learn how you can control the way you think and positively affect every area of your life!

About The Author:

Joyce Meyer is one of the world's leading practical Bible teachers. A #1 New York Times bestselling author, she has written more than eighty inspirational books, including The Secret to True Happiness, 100 Ways to Simplify Your Life, the entire Battlefield of the Mind family of books, her first venture into fiction with The Penny, and many others. She has also released thousands of audio teachings, as well as a complete video library. Joyce’s Enjoying Everyday Life radio and television programs are broadcast around the world, and she travels extensively conducting conferences. Joyce and her husband, Dave, are the parents of four grown children and make their home in St. Louis, Missouri.

My Review:

I have loved the work and ministry of Joyce Meyer for many years and I am very fortunate to be able to read her latest release, Power Thoughts. It is the follow up to Battlefield of the Mind and was awesome!

Meyer always knows the right thing to say to not only encourage you, and urges you to remember you a child of God through each of the 12 power thoughts discussed in the book. A well-written and easy to read book that will be on my bookshelf for a long time to come. Though an easy book to read, it is one that takes a while to go through, and I am going to read through it again in the near future, making notes as I go. The book is very theologically sound and would be a welcome addition to any Christian's personal library.

A great gift idea for the upcoming holiday gift giving season, which I highly recommend.

The Church Awakening: Book Review and Giveaway

About The Book:

In THE CHURCH AWAKENING, Charles Swindoll discusses the challenges, struggles, and priorities of the church in the twenty-first century. He reveals the problems inherent in the entertainment-based postmodern church and shows how a return to biblical teaching will restore its strength and impact. Now being replaced by a feel-good message instead of what Christians need to know to stand strong in a world that's lost its way--Swindoll exposes the problems of--and solutions for--the postmodern evangelical church.

About The Author:

Charles Swindoll has devoted over four decades to two passions: an unwavering commitment to the practical communication and application of God's Word, and an untiring devotion to seeing lives transformed by God's grace. Chuck graduated magna cum laude from Dallas Theological Seminary and has since been honored with four doctorates. For his teaching on Insight for Living, he has received the Program of the Year award and the Hall of Fame award from the National Religious Broadcasters as well as multiple book awards.

My Review:

The Church Awakening is a book that needs to be read by every church pastor and every church member. It is a journey to discover what the Church really should be. In today's modern world, it seems that many churches are more concerned about what the music sounds like, what programs are offered and how much money is coming in; Rather then being concerned about spreading the Gospel Message of Jesus Christ.

Swindoll discusses these issues in great length and really gets the reader to think about what church really should be. He points to the Acts 2 church and reminds us that the essentials of a solid church should be: Teaching, Fellowship, Breaking Bread and Prayer. He comments on each of these four areas extensively with wonderful illustrations and strong theology.

Each chapter covers a different topic related to the erosion of the modern day church and what we, as Christians, need to do to stop the erosion:

Chapter 1 gives an overview of what the Acts 2 church is and how the modern church needs to get back to that design

Chapter 2 covers the major challenges, struggles, solutions and priorities in today's Church

Chapter 3 details what a contagious church looks like

Chapter 4 examines what Worship is and is not (my favorite chapter in the entire book)

CHapter 5 explains what the Church today needs to realize: we are in the world, but should not be of it

Chapter 6 covers the struggles of Spiritual Warfare and how the Church should be reacting

Chapter 7 explores and shows how today's church as drifted (often unintentionally) away from strong Biblical Teachings

Chapter 8 gives today's Churches hope that all is not lost and gives tips on how to get back to being an Acts 2 church, as God originally wanted.

Here are just a few quotes from the book that really resonated with me:

"True worship begins by realizing that God sees those who worship Him with all of who are they are. It's not just a Sunday morning activity. When I awaken in the morning, God seeks my worship. As I am serving in my vocation throughout the day, God seeks my worship. On Saturday afternoon when I'm at work in my yard, God seeks my worship. The Father wants me to worship Him in all circumstances: as I drive my car...as I rear my family...as I live alongside my wife...when I am alone or when I'm with others...when I'm thinking quietly or laughing loudly. The same is true of your life, whatever the details may be. He wants you to view everything as an act of worship - Good or bad"  (p. 141)

"It is high time that believers protest against those who have taken the church in the wrong direction. As Christians, we must demand a halt to superficial religion that substitutes for personal faithfulness. We should refuse to be entertained any longer. We must stop calling it "worship". It's time we openly state that we expect deep teaching from the Word of God from our Pastor, not a 12 minute sermonette. We must begin looking to our pastor to equip us to do the work of ministry and not expect him to do ministry for us" (p. 256)

"Amazingly, one of the greatest challenges the church has faced in recent years centers on the one element that makes the church unique in a secularized society: meaningful worship. It is how we worship that has become a lingering battle, what I mentioned earlier as worship wars. We must remember the difference between the essence of worship - what it represents - and the expression of worship - how we connect to God and one another. The first is essential, but the second is not...and hardly worth the war" (p. 267)

A wonderful resource to show us what we need to do to get back to being the Church Jesus intended and encouragement for the journey! A must have book for any church library!

With Christmas just around the corner this would a perfect gift for anyone in Church Leadership.

Embers Of Love: Book Review

About The Book:

She was certain she could strike a match

After being educated in the east, Deborah Vandermark returns to Perkinsville, Texas, where her family is part of the thriving logging industry. She brings along an unexpected companion—her best friend, who is fleeing a wedding and groom she has no interest in. A determined matchmaker, Deborah sets her sights on uniting her brother and friend in what she hopes will be a true love match.

Then Deborah meets Christopher Clayton, the town's new doctor—and quickly realizes she has a much greater interest in medicine and science than the bookkeeping she studied at college.  Soon Deborah is caught between her fascination for doctoring and her obligation to her family. And in the midst of her warring emotions is the doctor himself• Are her tumultuous feelings for the man, or for what he can teach her?

My Review:

I have read many of Tracie Peterson's books and have been a fan for a very long time and was very happy to have the opportunity to review her most recent release, Embers Of Love. It is the first book in the Striking A Match series, and if this novel serves as any indication, this series is going to be fantastic.

Throughout this easy, and quick, to read novel, you will find themes such as love, women's rights, and the importance of standing up for yourself. The characters are wonderful and I loved how they were developed throughout the novel. It will be interesting to see their development in the next book, Hearts Aglow, due in February 2011.

The storyline was exciting and fresh and will be a thrill for all Christian Historical Fiction fans to read. I very much enjoyed this book.

A great Christmas gift idea for the book lover in your life! I highly recommend this book and give it a thumbs up.

My Review:
Okay is it geeky to admit that I like office supplies? I admit it, I love them! I love to organize, re-organize and then do it all again. And if the products I am using are eco-friendly I am even happier.
When I discovered a great company like ReBinder, I realized that I could indulge my obsession with office supplies and be environmentally friendly at the same. WooHoo!
Admittedly, I did not know just how sturdy these products would be and was estatic when I opened up my box and found the above products to be strong and durable. Also, as soon as I checked out all the products I received, my creative juices began to flow. You see I am a scrapbooker and I realized that I could "pretty up" the binders and the notebook. In fact, I could alter all of the products I received to review.
I have not had the opportunity to do so yet, but I am planning to use both binders, index dividers, and slouch pocket as my new Home Organization Binder. Now this is a work in progress and I will definitely post photos of the finished project in the near future.
I love that all these products are not only made of recycled materials, but can be recycled themselves. Very cool in my eyes.
If you are looking for durable, long lasting, office supply products that can be completely customized to your liking, I highly recommend ReBinder!
With Christmas just around the corner, all these products can be used to put together wonderful, personalized gifts  for all ages. A huge thumbs up to ReBinder.

The ESV Study Bible: Book Review

Over the years, I have collected a number of Bibles, all different translations and styles. I received my first Study Bible (NIV) as a high school graduation gift from my parents in 1991 and have loved Study Bibles since then.

I love having a number of translations so that when I want to really dig deep into scripture, I can compare and contrast verses and have study resources like maps, study notes, and concordances readily available to me. Having a number of Bibles was especially handy as a Bible College student in the mid-1990's. I have the following translations of the Bible in my personal home library: NIV Study Bible, Life Application Study Bible (NIV), Amplified Bible, NASB Study Bible, The Message, King James Version, and a Greek/English Bible.

Recently I had the opportunity to review the ESV Study Bible, published by Crossway Books.

About The ESV Study Bible:

The ESV Study Bible was created to help people understand the Bible in a deeper way. Combining the best and most recent evangelical Christian scholarship with the highly regarded ESV text, it is the most comprehensive study Bible ever published.

The ESV Study Bible features more than 2,750 pages of extensive, accessible Bible resources, including completely new notes, full-color maps, illustrations, charts, timelines, and articles created by an outstanding team of 93 evangelical Christian scholars and teachers. In addition to the 757,000 words of the ESV Bible itself, the notes and resources of the ESV Study Bible comprise an additional 1.1 million words of insightful explanation and teaching-equivalent to a 20-volume Bible resource library all contained in one volume.
  • Size: 6 ½" x 9 ¼"
  • 2,752 pages
  • Single-column Bible text (9-point type); double-column notes (7.25-point type)
  • Black letter text
  • Finest quality European Bible paper
  • Durable Smyth-sewn bindings on all editions
  • Lifetime guarantee on materials and binding on all leather and TruTone® Bibles
The ESV Study Bible is available in print form and online—and the online edition is available free to all who purchase a copy of the print edition. The ESV Online Study Bible provides additional unique features, including the ability to create personal online notes; to search and follow interactive links between notes, maps, articles, charts, timelines, illustrations, and cross-references; to listen to audio recordings of the ESV; and to access additional resources not available in the print edition—all available for free with the print edition.

Access to the ESV Online Study Bible may also be purchased separately from the print edition.

My Review:

This is, by far, the best Study Bible I have used. I have been using it for a few weeks now and am loving it! I recently read through the entire ESV Study Bible as part of the Bible in 90 Days program. For that particular program I used the ESV Online Study Bible, so that I could bookmark portions of scripture that I wanted to go back and study in a deeper fashion. The Online version made it so easy to do that, instead of a ton of pieces of paper, etc.

The ESV Study Bible is packed full of study notes, maps, full color illustrations and so much more. I have really enjoyed getting back into deeper studies, which I have not really done since my Bible College Days. I believe the Study Notes are superior to any other notes I have used in other Study Bibles. It is like having a mini-commentary set in one Bible.

The one thing that I love best about the ESV Study Bible is the extensive articles, both at the beginning and end of the Bible. The articles cover topics such as Theology In The New Testament, Archaeology And The Bible, The Original Languages Of The Bible. The Online ESV Study Bible is great for me, because if I am away from home, and don't have my Bible with me (or have a different translation available) I can just go online to read or study. Fantastic!

The Online Study Bible has 12 different reading plans, and currently I am using the ESV Study Bible Plan which has me reading four scripture passages: three from the Old Testament and one from the New Testament. The binding on this Bible is very strong and I know it will last a very long time. Very important as I use it on a daily basis. This will be the perfect Bible to pass on to my children one day. I love that the passages for the day are all in one page so I don't have to switch screens, but can still use the online tools such as notes.

The ESV Study Bible is perfect for any Bible College students, Pastors, and anyone who is wanting to study deeper into God's Word.

The study notes are very well-written and easy to understand, as well as practical for everyday living. The only downfall to me is the size - it is heavy, and therefore not a Bible I would bring along with me to Church on Sunday mornings. As a mom, I have to carry diaper bags, and other items with me, so I typically bring a smaller Bible with me. However, I have used my ESV Study Bible for my weekly Bible Study at church and it is perfect for that, and home studying.

A perfect gift for the upcoming Christmas season, graduation, birthday, or any other gift giving event.

BUY IT: The ESV Study Bible is available in a variety of styles including MP3 format, Leather, Hardcover, and TruTone. Check out Crossway Books for more information. It is also available through your local Christian Bookseller.

***I received a complimentary ESV Study Bible Hardcover Edition courtesy of Crossway books, for the purpose of review on this blog. All opinions expressed are my own, and I was not compensated in any other manner***

Head In The Clouds: Book Review

About The Book:

When a recovering romantic goes to work for a handsome ranch owner, her heart's not the only thing in danger!

Adelaide Proctor longs to find a real-life storybook hero to claim as her own. But when a husband-hunting debacle leaves her humiliated, she interviews for a governess position on a remote Texas sheep ranch and vows to leave her silly romantic yearnings behind.

Gideon Westcott left his privileged life in England to make a name for himself in America's wool industry, never expecting to end up with a child. To his dismay, five-year-old Isabella hasn't uttered a word since she lost her mother. The unconventionality of the new governess concerns Gideon—and intrigues him at the same time. But he can't afford distractions.

When Isabella's uncle comes to claim the girl—and her inheritance—Gideon and Adelaide must work together to protect Isabella from the man's evil schemes. Soon neither can deny their growing attraction. But after so many heartbreaks, will Adelaide be willing to get her head out of the clouds and put her heart on the line?

My Review:

A Tailor-Made Bride was Witemeyer's debut novel and I loved it (you can see my review here). When the opportunity arose to review her most recent novel, Head In The Clouds I jumped at the chance. I was not disappointed in the least.

The book is a quick and easy read, taking me only a couple of days to complete. I love the tenacity of the main character and how, even though she did her own thing, she always relied on God's guidance throughout the novel. What a great message. The characters and storyline were wonderfully developed.

You will find all the ingredients for a fantastic novel in Head in the Clouds: romance, danger, suspense, a great pick for both Witemeyer and Christian Historical Fiction fans. I look forward with anticipation to the next novel by this author, To Win Her Heart.

A great gift idea for the upcoming Christmas gift giving season!
