30 Day Photo Project: Day 3

Day 3 - A Photo of the cast of your favorite TV show

There are a number of shows that I really enjoy but one of my favorites is Criminal Minds. I have always loved the forensic aspect of crimes shows on TV, like this one, CSI and others. I love the exploration of why people do what they do, and I think that is why I am drawn to this show. I do usually try to preview what the show will be about, whenever possible, and if it something very brutal (involving occult, etc) I will not watch it.

30 Day Photo Project: Day 2

Day 2: A Picture of You and the person you have been the closest with the longest

My husband and I - November 1997 (met in 1996)

I also have a very close friend who lives out of province of me, but we have known one another since Sept 1991 (almost 20 years!)

Looking Back on 2010

It amazes me that 2010 ends in only two days. Seriously???? This year went way to quickly, and was full of wonderful memories and the hardest of times both. As I reflect on the year, there are many thoughts that cross my mind. I can laugh at many memories and shudder when I think what could have been, had different choices been made. Seriously though, there are a number of people I want to thank that helped to make 2010 the year that it was.

1. My Husband - Darling, you are my best friend, soulmate, lover, and I love you more everyday. 2010 has been a trying time for our marriage, but I know that healing has begun and I love the changes I am seeing in us as individuals and as a couple. You are the best father, and it is my hope and prayer that one day our girls will find men of God, like you. It is my prayer that 2011 will be the best year our marriage has ever seen and I cannot wait to see what God has in store for us.

2. My Girls - Wow, I have never been put on such a learning curve as when I became a mom. After thinking I would not have children (actually that it would be very difficult without help) I am so glad to have been blessed with two beautiful little girls. Both of you have very distinct personalities and I love that! You have taught me so many things, including making me realize that I can do so many things I did not realize I could. It is my prayer and wish that through 2011 I will be the best mom you can have and that God will work through me to help you both grow as God's Little Princesses.

3. My Family - Although we have only see many of you only once this year as we celebrated Kat and Kenny's wedding, know that you are always on my mind and in my heart. Distance may separate us but you are always with me during my days. I cannot wait to meet the two new babies that are coming in Spring 2011 and pray that my sister's will continue to both have very healthy pregnancies and safe deliveries.

4. My Friends - Know that each of you holds a special place in my heart and that I would not be the person I am today if not for you. Some of you I have known for almost 20 years, others only a couple years but each of you has taught me so much! Thank you for the laughter, the tears, for the reconnecting via Facebook, and just simply for all the memories! Distance may separate many of us but wow the memories are awesome!

5. To My Bloggy Readers/Friends - It has been an incredible couple years on this little blog of mine. I have "met" some amazing people and found some incredible blogs to read and follow. Thank you for the follows, comments and tips that have helps build this blog to where it currently is. I look forward to all that 2011 will bring in terms of A Mom After God's Own Heart. You have all been a tremendous blessing to me, and I can't wait to see what God does through me and this blog!

6. To My Sponsors - to all the wonderful companies I have had the pleasure of working with during 2010, thank you from the bottom of my heart. There were many of you, as well as some fantastic publishing companies. I have been so blessed to bring your wonderful products to the attention of my readers.I have loved promoting products, books and hosting giveaways for your fantastic products. I look forward to 2011 and working with many of you again, as well as with other companies!

7. To My God - Thank you Lord for the opportunity to have this blog, to bless my readers and reach those around the world about your Love and Grace. I pray that I have lived my blog life with the integrity You deserve and call for, and I look forward to all that You call me to in 2011! May Your hand be continually on this blog and all I write.

Be blessed!

Mysterious Islands DVD: A Review

About The DVD:

At the far end of the world, there exists a strange and unusual chain of islands, resting above vast tectonic plates in the ocean below.

This is the world of the Galapagos Archipelago, home to salt-spitting marine iguanas, flightless cormorants, and giant tortoises that can live to be more than 150 years of age. It is also the birthplace of Darwinism. For here in 1835, a young Charles Darwin began to formulate a theory which would turn the world upside down. More than a century and a half later, these mysterious islands remain at the center of a controversy that has shaped the way modern men perceive science, religion, culture, and life itself. While Christians look to Jerusalem, and Muslims to Mecca, evolutionists look to the Galapagos as the spiritual center of their scientific faith. And the unique ingredients found on the Galapagos Islands have led many of Darwin's most devoted followers to describe it as Darwin's Eden, and a "laboratory for evolution."

Now, for the 200th anniversary of Darwin's birth and the 150th of his magnum opus, On the Origin of Species, Doug Phillips leads a team of Christian scientists and investigators to this "ground zero" in the war of the worldviews. Seen through the eyes of 16-year-old Joshua Phillips, who joins his father and noted researchers like Dr. John Morris of the Institute for Creation Research, THE MYSTERIOUS ISLANDS is the story of one boy's search for answers to the greatest controversy of the modern world. It is a refreshing father and son adventure that combines cinematically breathtaking footage with high adventure. THE MYSTERIOUS ISLANDS is a fast-paced film that tracks their journey of discovery as this unusual team walks where Darwin walked and engages with the amazing creatures that he chronicled in his research. Their quest: To determine whether the Galapagos Islands are a laboratory for evolution, as Darwinists claim, or a showcase for the biblical account of creation.

This beautiful ninety-minute documentary takes viewers deep beneath the ocean waves among hundreds of white-tip sharks, into volcanic craters with giant lizards, and to the unusual habitat of the blue-footed booby. Featuring a Christian team of scientists and investigators to shoot a documentary on the Galapagos in 2009—Darwin's anniversary year—THE MYSTERIOUS ISLANDS brings a fresh perspective on the Theory of Evolution and presents sweeping cinematography of one of the most remote, desolate, and fascinating locations in the world.

My Review:

First off, this documentary was stunning. The camera work, the angles, everything about it displayed nature in all its splendor. Spectacular! This is a wonderful addition to your family viewing collection, even if you only have younger children right now. They will absolutely love all the animals that are seen throughout this DVD.

Although my children were too young to understand the movie and concepts surrounding creationism as a whole, this is a wonderful introduction to it, and I know Mysterious Islands will be viewed in my home for years to come. Our favorite parts of the movie were definitely the bonus features, especially the Various Animal Clips and Shooting The Galapagos: A Photographer's Journey. You, and your family will be taken on a fantastic journey of God's magnificent handiwork! A must see for every Christian!

I highly recommend this DVD and give it a huge thumbs up.

101 Things In 1001 Days

Every year around this time many people are making resolutions regarding things they want to do in the next year. Lose weight, eat better, spend more time with the kids, and the list goes on and on.

I am no different. I love making goals at the beginning of each new year and seeing how many I can accomplish. It is great to have the goals on paper, it is incentive to get things done and to develop into a better person because of all the goals.

Cinch: Book Review

I have tried to embrace a healthy lifestyle during the last five or so years, as I knew that I needed to loose some excess weight. Being only 5'2" and 170ish pounds is definitely not healthy. I knew I had to do something about it, but either I did not stick to a diet program or got bored with working out.

Then in January 2010, I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes and realized that I had to step up my efforts in my weight loss journey. In the span of six months, with a complete overhaul in the way I cook, and eat, as well as adding regular exercise I was able to loose 30lb. I am really proud of myself, but I also find myself getting frustrated still with having to count calories or keep track of my carb intake. I am always on the hunt for more ways to make this less frustrating, so I don't fall into bad habits again.

Recently I was introduced to Cinch, a 30 Day weight-loss program, and I can't wait to tell you all about it.

About The Book:

There are no calories to count; no points or grams to memorize.
Just begin choosing four daily meals from over one hundred delicious options (along with a mandatory daily chocolate escape), and you're well on your way to achieving your weight-loss goals. In thirty days on the Cinch! plan, you'll shed pounds and inches—and overcome emotional eating in the process.

Acclaimed weight-loss expert Cynthia Sass has arrived at the exciting secret to sustainable weight loss: her innovative combinations of clean, nutrient-rich foods not only maximize fat-burning but also deliver a faster, healthier metabolismforever. Following the plan is as simple as putting together an easy-to-understand fivepiece puzzle at every meal and enjoying four delicious, easy-to-prepare meals in addition to a chocolate treat. The Cinch! plan includes a full thirty days' worth of quick-fix, satisfying meals and teaches you a simple strategy for creating your own, so you know exactly what, how much, and when to eat, whether you're at home, at a restaurant, or on vacation. Cinch! makes weight loss simple, with meals you'll look forward to eating (no "diet" foods). And best of all, Sass starts her plan with an innovative five-day "Fast Forward," which jump-starts the plan's impressive results and will leave you feeling lighter and healthier.

If you've been trying to eat more clean, natural, and organic foods, but have lacked the structure needed to lose weight, this is the exact plan you've been waiting for. Cinch! includes every tool you'll need for weightloss success: Sass's proven plan, expert tips and advice, daily journals, grocery-shopping lists, chapters on exercise and emotional eating, and a month's worth of recipes—customizable for meat eaters, vegetarians, and vegans. You'll enjoy Chocolate Pear Ginger Smoothies, Jalapeño Guacamole, and Chicken Pesto Pitas—to name just a few luscious Cinch! options!

Best of all, Cinch! weight loss is lasting weight loss. In one month, you'll recalibrate your body, freeing yourself from cravings and erratic eating, and begin a satisfying new relationship with food. With Sass's expertise behind you, you'll be empowered to continue creating Cinch!-friendly meals and feel inspired by a wealth of new eating habits—making this so much more than a diet.

My Review:

I will be the first one to admit I am an emotional eater and a habitual evening snacker. I was very happy to read Cinch! and see that it can help a person overcome emotional eating, by making some really simple changes in your life. At the same time, you will become happier and loss weight too! There is a combination I can handle.

The book is loaded with fantastic ideas and tricks to overcome emotional eating, including charts to write down how you are feeling when you eat, great sounding recipes and a 5-day jump start to get your metabolism on track. The first five days of the program you eat spinach, raspberries, almonds, organic eggs, and nonfat plain organic yogurt. The book also gives you a list of foods and beverages that are good for the 30 day program. Sass also includes three rules that will help your 30 day program be successful:

1. Eat Like Clockwork - eat breakfast within one hour of waking up, and every 3-5 hours after that

2. Think "Five Pieces, Four Times A Day" - the way to organize your meals (produce, a whole grain, lean protein, plant based fat, and seasonings)

3. Make Flavor Your Focus - seasonings are a good thing; season meals with at least one of vinegar, citrus juice or zest, hot peppers, tea or herbs and spices.

I am about half through the book and am looking forward to January and really working through the program. There is so much to process through it and I will be blogging more about this program in January so stay tuned!

If you are looking for a new weight loss program to use in the new year, I highly recommend this book!

Make This CHRISTmas about The Cross!

This week I have spent a lot of time contemplating Christmas and what it truly means to me. I think that since having children I have really understood the importance of emphasizing the Birth of Jesus at Christmas, versus all the commercialism that exists.....here is a great video to help us all remember that Jesus' birth is what CHRISTmas is all about!

Merry Christmas!

Although it is only Wednesday, I thought I would take the opportunity to thank each and everyone of my readers and followers, as well as sponsors, for a fantastic year. I have "met" and discovered some wonderful people and even more fantastic blogs to read and learn from. Not only have I been able to grow A Mom After God's Own Heart into something that I love and cherish, but I am also able to write for two other blogs. What a year of growth and experience I have had. I am so thankful to God for opening the doors that He has, and for giving me the gift of communication. I have been able to share a ton of book reviews, product reviews, and fabulous giveaways.

However you are celebrating Christmas this year, it is my hope and prayers that you have a safe, fun, holiday and I look forward to sharing my thoughts and life with you in 2011! Merry Christmas from my family and I!

God bless you all!

My Reaction

Yesterday I posted about a certain Etsy shop that was selling some really horrible greeting cards. Without rehashing everything again, I suggested that my readers, followers and fellow bloggers join forces and boycott this particular shop. I also went so far as to suggest boycotting Etsy as a whole due to their lack of position with this seller. I have seen comments on Etsy forums, on Facebook, Twitter and especially left here on my blog. Some comments I have purposely not posted due to the fact that people wrote them anonymously or the comments were malicious or hurtful. That is my choice.

Now I realize that boycotting Etsy, as a whole, does hurt those shops who are have fantastic products and I am very sorry for that. As I have said, once Etsy steps up to the plate, I will be back. For those commenters who have asked "did you pray about this?", the answer is a resounding yes! I have thought long and hard about this situation and I stand by my original statements. Clearly not a popular opinion, but nonetheless, an opinion.

It was not my intention to judge, but to bring awareness to the masses. In doing so, I know I offended many people and for that I am truly sorry, and ask for your forgiveness.

BOYCOTT ETSY!!!

About a year ago, I discovered the wonderful world of Etsy, and all the wonderful shops that sell there. Everything from books, to toys, to clothing and home decor. All beautiful and handmade products, and I have been a supporter of several shops, done reviews for several and even featured a number of them on this blog.

However, it has come to my attention today that a certain Etsy seller is creating and selling greeting cards that congratulate people on being sexually assaulted, having breast cancer, and having a child with Down Syndrome! Seriously, I was appalled and for good reason! WHO DOES THIS! And what blows me away is the Etsy Administration is okay with it!!! You can read the whole story here.

I am urging all my readers to choose today to boycott Etsy until they decide to pull these awful products from the site. Seriously, I love the many sellers I have come to "meet" and partner with, and will miss doing business with them. However, until Etsy Admin change their position on this situation, I cannot in good, Christian conscience do business on any kind on Etsy.

About The Book:

An anthology of Advent readings collected from the writings and sermons of 22 classic and contemporary theologians and Bible teachers.
Between purchasing presents and planning travel, enjoying holiday pageants and attending parties, it is all too easy for Christmas to silence the sacredness and crowd out a quiet anticipation of the season's truths. So when editor Nancy Guthrie decided she wanted a reflective book of Advent readings that would help her pause and consider the riches of Christ come to earth, she embarked on what she calls "a sacred adventure," putting together such a collection herself.
The result-this special volume-draws from the works and sermons of classic theologians such as Whitefield, Luther, Spurgeon, and Augustine, and from leading contemporary communicators such as John Piper, J. Ligon Duncan, Randy Alcorn, John MacArthur, Francis Schaeffer, R. C. Sproul, Skip Ryan, and Joni Eareckson Tada to beckon you and your family into the wonder of Jesus' incarnation and birth.
With its high view of Scripture and its focus on the gift of Jesus, this lovely book is sure to ready your heart and mind for a fresh experience of "Immanuel, God with us" this and every Advent season. Open the cover and discover what Christmas was meant to be…

My Review:
Every year I try to pick up a new devotional or book about Advent, to help me really understand the great gift that God gave us in the birth of His son, Jesus. I have read a number of very good books about Advent over the years, but Come Thou Long-Expected Jesus, is by far one of my favorites.
As you read you will come across wonderful meditations from Christian theologians from the past and present, yet my favorite entries was from Francis Schaeffer, which reads:
"As we ourselves have run down the hill with the shepherds, looked at the baby, and heard the shepherd's testimony, have we believed? If we have, that is a happy thing indeed, for it means we are now Christians. That is fine, but then we must ask ourselves: what difference has this looking made in our present lives?
At Christmas time, we set up our Christmas trees and toy trains. We may even walk along singing carols, or we may preach a sermon, but these bits and pieces are barren if we are thinking only of them or even thinking only of being in heaven, and are not stopping to ask ourselves, What difference does it make in our life now?" (p.107)
Here is another quote from the book, by Tim Kelller:
Christmas is the end of thinking you are better than someone else, because Christmas is telling you that you could never get to heaven on your own. God had to come to you - Tim Keller (p. 40)
I thoroughly loved reading this book, and will continue to read it for years to come during the Advent season. I have recommended it to a few friends already and will to many more. It contains some of my favorite teachers, including John Piper and Randy Alcorn.
I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up.

Meaning At The Movies: A Book Review

About The Book:

This illuminating book helps Christians think biblically and critically about the art and culture of film, moving beyond simple moral judgments to an understanding of deeper worldviews and philosophical meaning.
Hollywood produces, packages, and sells hundreds of movies every year. Many of these movies propagate a distorted sense of morality and ethics. Under the surface of immoral behavior and unlawfulness, however, there can be deeper problems in Hollywood's messages. What are these stories telling the viewer about life, relationships, and God? What worldviews and ideas do they espouse? If Christians are to tread carefully at the theater complex, they need resources to help them.
This book is just such a resource. By exploring the relationship between Christianity and art, the theology of biblical discernment, and a brief history of filmmaking, as well as through analysis of popular films, Meaning at the Movies equips readers for careful discernment in the cinema. The book does not simply list criteria for judging film art; instead it encourages Christians to develop biblical and critical discernment in regard to not only film, but all aspects of culture.

About The Author:
Grant Horner is associate professor of English at the Master's College and has taught film at the college level for fourteen years. He was a contributor to John MacArthur's Think Biblically! and speaks regularly on current theological trends, philosophy, and popular culture.

My Review:

Like many of you, I love movies. My favorite genres are mystery/suspense, chick flick romance, action (depending on the actors), and drama. I have watched many movies over the years, both in the theater and via VHS and DVD. I believe the first time I ever saw a movie in the theater was the original Star Wars in 1977ish (please correct me if I am wrong on that year). Obviously, I do not remember that outing with my family, but I know we attended several over the years, such as E.T., The Lion Kind, Father Of The Bride, to name just a few.

Over the last few years though I have tried to become more discerning in regards to my movie viewing. Not always successfully, but mostly. I have said "no" to watching movies based on the occult, witchcraft, or horror, but was okay watching movies that clearly violated moral and biblical standards. Hmmm, something did not seem right about that. Now, I am not knocking any said genre or movie specifically, but I think I was bordering on being legalistic in my viewing choices, while also overlooking important teachable moments.

That is why reading Meaning At The Movies by Grant Horner was so beneficial to me. His book is loaded with scriptural references and really showed me what is truly involved in becoming a discerning Christian movie viewer/goer. His book was very easy to read and I read it fairly quickly. I realized that I had a lot to learn, and need to view movies that will not only edify God, but also encourage, and edify me in my Christian walk.

As Horner mentions in his introduction, Meaning At The Movies is not able what movies Christians "should or should not watch". Its about why the film industry exists in general and how we, as Christians, should develop a discerning world view in regards to film.

If you are a movie buff, and like to dig deep with regards to movies you view, I highly recommend Meaning At The Movies. It will challenge you and give you a lot of food for thought. I read it quickly for the purpose of reviewing it, but I am going to go back and really dig into it in the near future.

Remember Why You Play: A Book Review

About The Book:

If you enjoyed Friday Night Lights, this book is a must-read. Remember Why You Playdocuments the lives, struggles, and triumphs of the players and coaches of Faith Christian School in Grapevine, Texas.
Sports columnist and author David Thomas followed the team for a full season, recording a story that will inspire readers to understand that relationships are more important than winning.

One of the key events was a game that Faith Christian played against the Gainesville State Tornadoes, a school for convicted juvenile offenders. The story of this spectacular game is being made into a movie, titled One Heart, with an anticipated release in November 2010. Reminiscent of Hoosiers and Remember the Titans, this true story makes a strong statement about the impact of compassion and sportsmanship.

About The Author:

David Thomas is a senior writer and sports columnist for theFort Worth Star–Telegram. His work has been honored nationally by the Associated Press Sports Editors, and he has received the McClatchy Company President's Award for excellence in journalism. A lifelong Texan and graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington, he lives near Fort Worth, Texas, with his wife, Sally, and their two children, Ashlin and Tyson.

My Review:

A action packed book that will bring you to the heart of high-school football. I love how it does indeed remind me of Friday Night Lights but even more so, The Blind Side. You will meet some fabulous people as you read through Remember Why You Play. You will meet people who, even at a young age, know that the way they live their lives as Christians is see daily, and therefore strive to live a life worthy of Him. They make mistakes, but it was delightful to see the honesty that was seen in the lives of the players and coaches. They know they have to live above reproach, and strive to be "sold out" for Christ, both on and off the field. A very important lesson for anyone, whether you are an athlete or not. Everyone who reads Remember Why You Play will learn something. I know I did.

A very well-written and easy to read book, that even high school students will enjoy. I am definitely going to check out the movie, One Heart, which is based on this book.

A perfect gift idea for any sports fan, particularly football, this Christmas season.

Then Sings My Soul Saturday

As we approach Christmas with only a few short days to go, I have been contemplating the question, "What were they thinking?" That is, what were the thoughts that Mary, Joesph, and others were thinking as the star shone, as the Angels appeared, as they journeyed to Bethlehem that cold night so many years ago. I am in awe just thinking about the gift that was given to me (and all other Christians) but I cannot even fathom what thoughts would have been going through the heads of those involved that night.

As I went through this week of contemplation, I found these songs that really brought my thoughts to life, and I wanted to share them today.

If you would like to check out some more beautiful and inspiration music, head over to Then Sings My Soul Saturday, hosted by Amy at Signs, Miracles and Wonders!

Be blessed as we approach the celebration of our King of Kings!

A New Favorite Christmas Song!

Every December I go on the hunt for new Christmas music to enjoy. This year is no different. One of my favorite singers is Chris Tomlin, and last year he released "Glory In The Highest", his Christmas CD. It is beautiful. One song that is on there is entitled, Winter Song, and it is accompanied by Audrey Assad. I have featured on my blog before, but it is so wonderful, and puts me in such a spirit of remember Christ's birth during this Christmas season that I wanted to share it again!

Enjoy it!

Be Blessed this week and always.

How Shall We Feed Them: Book Review and Giveaway

About The Book:

“Brother, are you okay? Do you and your family have food?” a neighbor asked. Immediately, the man began to cry. Wiping away his tears, he said it had been days since they had food in the house and they had two boys. Overwhelmed, the neighbor asked if he would receive food from the church. The answer was yes, so they got in the car and went to the church’s food pantry. They were able to load them up!

This is one of many stories of meeting the needs of hungry people you will find in this practical book. It provides everything an individual, church, or organization needs to establish or revitalize a food pantry, including specific, step-by-step instructions for:

• Building a food pantry team
• Choosing a place for the food pantry
• Stocking and replenishing the shelves
• Creating guidelines for food pantry recipients
• Ministering to the food recipients

Also included are tear-out materials to help set up a food pantry, including a detailed action plan, check-off lists, sign-up sheets, food recipient information sheets, and contribution sign-up sheets.

Today more than ever, churches and Christian organizations need to meet the needs of increasing numbers of hungry people. Organizing a food pantry is a tangible way to do that. If you want to serve God by helping people in need, this inspiring book is for you.

How Shall We Feed Them? by Marty Girardier from WinePress Group on Vimeo.

About The Author:

Marty Girardier founded the Cupboards for Christ ministry at her church to revialize its food pantry ministry, and the program tripled in size over the next three years. Marty and her husband, John, live in Chesapeake, Virginia. They have two grown sons and a grandson.

My Review:

For as long as time has been, there have been people in need. Whether it is in need of jobs, clothes, homes, or food, there is always a need out there to fill. Over the years, I have seen countless homeless shelters, and community food banks helping the less fortunate and that is great, but as Christians we are mandated to help those less fortunate than us.

I know that many churches around the world have ministries that help those in their own congregations and it has only been in the last 10 years or so that I have seen churches I have been involved in, step up to the plate and reach out in tangible ways to meet people's physical needs, while also attending to their spiritual ones. By acting out our faith to those less fortunate, we are showing them God's grace and that is what it is all about.

How Shall We Feed Them? by Marty Girardier is a book that EVERY church needs to have in their possession. It takes you through the process of setting up a Food Pantry Ministry that will reach not only your own congregation, but also the community. Included are a ton of lists and templates that will help you get your own Food Pantry Ministry planned and implemented with ease.

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up.
