Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights - What A Zoo! CD Review and Giveaway!

About What A Zoo!:

Building on the momentum of her 2010 Parents' Choice Gold Award winning album, I'm A Rock Star, independent children's musician Joanie Leeds brings her attention to the animal kingdom with the April 12 release of her new kids' CD, What A Zoo! Joining Joanie and her band, The Nightlights, is the critically acclaimed "hip hop for kids" musician, Secret Agent 23 Skidoo.

What A Zoo! presents ten rockin' Joanie Leeds originals and four covers, each with its own distinctive personality that salutes every child's fascination with our animal friends. The lyrics are thought provoking and packed with educational value. "My Butterfly" explores metamorphosis, "Sea Cow" and "Big Blue Whale" focus on endangered species, and the delightful, two beat novelty song, "Tofurky" emphasizes responsible eating. Other songs are just plain fun. "Happy As A Clam" wends its way through the many animal-isms that pop up in our daily conversations, while the classic, "Pony Boy" provides a sweet country touch.

A brillantly eclectic presentation of the beloved children's folk ballad, "Froggie Went a Courtin'" updates Joanie's authentic swing phrasing to include a super hip appearance by guest rapper, Secret Agent 23 Skidoo. While the album is light-hearted, Joanie's cover of the Phish song "Possum" does let kids know what happens when you don't look both ways when crossing the street. And "Mosquitoes" is unapologetic about squashing those little bloodsuckers! What A Zoo! offers a perfect setting for Joanie's vocal virtuosity and impeccable good taste. Its sophisticated humor is rooted in real life experiences and guaranteed never to wear thin with the repeated listenings to this CD is bound to get.

About Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights:

Joanie Leeds' love for music began when she was just a little "city kid" in Miami. At her second birthday party, Joanie dazzled the crowd by grabbing the party performer's microphone and singing, "Tomorrow" from Annie at the top of her lungs. The party guests were astonished, but two-year old Joanie had no idea that entertaining kids was anything unusual. As she grew older, it was clear that Joanie possessed a major talent, and she gravitated toward musical and theatrical activities throughout her school years. Joanie also had an interest in working with kids, and during high school she taught music to children at Temple Beth Am and at song sessions and conventions of the National Federation of Temple Youth.

Equipped with a Syracuse University Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama and musical theatre, Joanie Leeds began her career as a singer/songwriter by performing in such NYC clubs as The Living Room, The Bitter End, Arlene's Grocery and CBGB's. Performing at night while working at a succession of "dead end" jobs by day proved less than fulfilling, however. At the suggestion of a friends, Joanie began working with children at a Manhattan Gymboree location, singing with and for the kids all day long. This led to positions as music specialist with a number of different children's programs and nursery schools. Joanie soon became so popular with NYC families that Time Out NY Kids dubbed her "one of the best at-home sing-along entertainers for kids" and, this year, she was similarly honored by Nickelodeon's Parent Connect. Having discovered the joy of sharing music with children, Joanie has never looked back.

My Review:

I LOVE this CD! More importantly, my girls loved (and still do) it. We have been jumping, dancing and moving around a ton since receiving What A Zoo! from Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights! Not only do the girls love this CD but we had a great time having a dance party with my home daycare children. We have been singing and dancing to the fun tracks on here, with family favorites being Mosquito and Blue Whale. As a mom and early childhood educator, this CD is a fun way to teach children about animals. When a product can combine my two favorites - music and education - I am all over that. There is not a lot of children's music that I will pop in and listen to when the kids are not around, but I can say I have done that with What A Zoo! and I am not embarrassed to admit it.

I highly recommend this fun, educational and high energy CD and give it a huge thumbs up!
