Revise Us Again: A Book Review

About The Book:

Revise what it means to live the Christian life.

Every person follows a script for living, a life-guide that offers cues for our behavior and direction for our choices. As believers, the Word of God gives us a script for experiencing life as God intended. Yet our scripts are often distorted by our environment, our culture, and our religious traditions. As a result, all of us are in constant need of revising the scripts that we live by.

Author Frank Viola believes we need to revisit and revise what it means to live the Christian life. Drawing from his rich background in ministry, Viola shares how believers can benefit from rescripting their lives in ten key areas. Written in a conversational tone and filled with practical insights, Revise Us Again is ideal for any reader who longs to follow God's original script for living.

About The Author:

Frank Viola is an internationally renowned speaker and author. He is a leading voice of the house church movement, a group of believers that seeks to reconnect with the original model of Christian fellowship. Frank lives with his family in Gainesville, Florida.

My Review:

As Christians, the most important book we can read to impact our lives is the Bible. It is the Word that gives us all the instructions we need to live our faith out loud to the world. However, the Lord has also seen fit to bless many of His followers with the gift of teaching and preaching. Over the years I have been taught by some many wonderful preachers/teachers, both male and female. Whether it is through a sermon, book, live event, or otherwise, the Lord has worked in some amazing ways to teach me what He wants me to learn.

Recently I had the opportunity to review a new-to-me author, Frank Viola. His book Revise Us Again has been a challenging read. In a good way. It is one of those books that I will reference time and again, I am sure.

This small book, under 200 pages, is written in an easy-to-read, conversational manner and will impact you to really examine your life and help you move from a legalistic faith to one full of what the Lord wanted our faith to be: lived out loud in love.

Chapters in the book include:

1. God's Three-Fold Speaking - Revise the Lord's Voice
2. The Lord Told Me - Revise Christianeze
3. Let Me Pray About It - Revise Christian Code Language
4. Spiritual Conversational Styles - Revising Our Semantics
5. What's Wrong With Our Gospel? - Revising Our Message
6. The Felt-Presence of God - Revising Our Awareness of the Divine
7. Captured by the Same Spirit You Oppose - Revising Our Attitudes
8. The God of Unseen Endings - Revising Our Spiritual Expectations
9. Stripping Down to Christ Alone - Revising the Holy Spirit's Ministry
10. Your Christ Is Too Small - Revising Our Chief Pursuit

The one thing that I really appreciated from reading this book was the reminder by the author to always test what we hear or learn from reading to the Scriptures. If it lines up, great, if it doesn't its not worth (and should not be read) taking the time to read it.

Not only does Viola show us how to revise our thinking about Christianity and how to live our Christian faith out loud, but he gives many wonderful examples, even some from his own faith journey. He acknowledges throughout the book that revising ourselves is a process, and will not always be easy and yet through the difficult times, we will be stretched and challenged in a way that Jesus has always wanted us to be.

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!
