Holiday Gift Guide Day 5: Rock N Learn Review and GIVEAWAY!

For the last couple years my family and I have had the fantastic opportunity to partner with Rock N' Learn, creators of fun, musical, educational DVD's, CD's and books for children ages 2 and up. Last month I received another great DVD in the mail and cannot wait to share my thoughts about it.

About Rock N Learn:

Rock 'N Learn began as an idea that would help children learn by putting educational material to music with a current sound -- the kind of music that kids enjoy and find motivating. Now with over 50 products, we have sold millions of audio/book and video programs to teachers and parents throughout the United States, Canada, and other countries.
Rock 'N Learn programs help students learn math, phonics, reading, early childhood, social studies, Spanish, test-taking strategies, writing, and science. Our DVDs incorporate music with exciting, colorful imagery.
Headquartered in Conroe, Texas, just north of Houston, Rock 'N Learn is owned and operated by its founders, Richard and Brad Caudle.
Working as a school psychologist in 1986, Richard saw the need for multi-sensory learning programs using the styles of music that kids love. He consulted his younger brother Brad, an accomplished musician, to record their first program to help kids learn multiplication facts. Strong sales of this recording in the school specialty and book markets led to other programs and the start of a successful company.
Richard and Brad never varied from their number one goal of providing children with programs that would make learning easier and fun. Brad's wife Melissa, a former second-grade teacher, writes material and coordinates educational research for Rock 'N Learn. Richard's wife, Kathie, manages our sales and marketing team.
Rock 'N Learn programs have received numerous awards such as Dr. Toy, Parents' Choice, iParenting, National Parenting Publications, Learning Magazine Teachers' Choice, Early Childhood News, National Parenting Center, and Parent's Guide to Children's Media. Our programs lead in the areas of quality and customer satisfaction based on surveys of school supply stores.
As documented in case studies by numerous school districts, Rock 'N Learn programs work. The overwhelmingly positive response from parents, teachers, and kids generates tremendous word-of-mouth support. By consulting with educators and featuring talented vocalists and performers, Rock 'N Learn will continue to develop quality audio and video programs that hold interest and help kids learn.

About Earth Science:
Want an exciting way to learn important facts and get ready for an earth science test? Marko the Pencil and his friend Terra take learners on a fascinating journey to Marko's Super Science Station where it's easy and fun to understand science concepts and boost test scores. This science DVD covers the Solar System, weather and the water cycle, types of rocks, properties of minerals, volcanoes and plate tectonics, weathering, and alternative energy. Meets the National Science Education Standards.
Kevin is a fifth-grader who actually enjoys taking science tests because he knows the perfect way to become well prepared. Even difficult science concepts can be easy to grasp with clear explanations and animations. Marko, a humanoid pencil, has just the right tips to help Kevin understand science, have fun, and get ready for tests.
Kevin is already waiting at Marko's Super Science Station when he is joined by Marko and Terra, an animated globe who "knows a thing or two about Earth science." As Terra explains, "Earth science has a lot to do with understanding astronomy, geology, meteorology, and more." Kevin begins his science test preparation with the solar system, learning about the sun and the eight planets that orbit the sun. Marko and Terra show Kevin an easy and entertaining way to remember the planets.
But that's not all. Kevin soon learns all about the asteroid belt, dwarf planets, and comets. What happens in space affects things on earth. Kevin gets a good grasp of how Earth and the sun interact to create day and night and cause the seasons.
Kevin and his friends have lots more to explore, including exactly how the water cycle influences weather. He learns a catchy song about evaporation, condensation, precipitation, and accumulation. He finds out how changes in air pressure cause wind.
In the Geology Learning Center, Kevin discovers different kinds of rocks and how they were formed. He learns that fossils give clues as to what the environment was like. Plus, he attends a cool "rock concert" performed by animated rocks: Sedimentary Sandstone, Igneous Granite, and Metamorphic Marble. After "rocking out," Kevin is ready for an experiment involving mineralogy: he uses properties such as color, luster, hardness, and streak to identify an unknown mineral sample.
Kevin next blasts off, compliments of a volcano, to the Topographic Learning Center. There, he finds out what caused changes in the Earth's surface throughout time and learns about plate tectonics and the development of shield volcanoes, cinder cones, and stratovolcanoes. He also experiences weathering and erosion. Lots of humor keeps students laughing as they get a good foundation for the types of material they will find on an earth science test. Animated examples help students understand sediment, erosion, glaciers, and deposition.
Any Earth science adventure would be incomplete without a visit to the Energy and Resource Learning Center, where Kevin explores different kinds of perpetual resources, including the sun, the wind, geothermal energy, and the ocean. He learns about renewable and nonrenewable resources, along with the latest ways to conserve energy and use energy more efficiently.
After the main portion of the DVD, students can go back whenever they want to review any section. The DVD menu makes this easy. Finally, when students are ready, they can join Kevin, Marko, and Terra to take a practice Earth Science test in the Bonus Section of this DVD. Marko and Terra coach Kevin on how to remember what he has learned and apply his knowledge to scoring high on earth science tests. It's a great review for all that's been learned. Marko even shares his secret website where students can download free study material to complement this DVD.
Earth Science DVD is useful for parents or grandparents to purchase for kids who love science and want to learn more. It's fun for any age, even kids much younger than fifth grade wanting to get an advanced understanding of science concepts. It's also perfect for parents looking to help their students get prepared for standardized science tests, around the fifth grade level and beyond. Good test preparation helps ease anxiety.
Along with our other DVDs, Physical Science and Life Science, students will have a complete and highly entertaining approach to science test preparation. Teachers love these DVDs for classroom use. They may use certain segments to help explain or introduce concepts that students have trouble grasping. These programs can be an important part of boosting science knowledge and preparing for state-mandated standardized science tests in any state.
Marko the Pencil is played by actor Vic Mignogna, Best Actor 2007 American Anime Awards and the voice for many popular video games.
Get started immediately by helping your child or your students brush up on earth science knowledge and learn some really great test-taking skills.

Grades 3rd - 8th. Approx. 61 minutes
My Review:
I cannot praise Rock N Learn enough.
My girls are only five and three years old but already have learn so many concepts from these DVD's it amazes me sometimes. It is no different with Earth Science. Although designed for children grades 3 to 8, my girls still really enjoyed it, with their favorite being the song that teaches children about the order of the planets. It was an acronym that was make into a song, and I thought so cute: "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Nachos".
I love that Rock N Learn combines music and learning as I find my girls learn music more when I add music to something. I see this with Bible memory and now with school concepts. As my girls are young, this is one DVD that will be viewed in my home for a very long time. The colors are bright throughout the DVD and even parents will find themselves tapping their feet to the catchy rhythms and singing along to the songs in no time. There is even practice test that older children can do to test their Earth Science knowledge. A perfect supplement for any child.
It is the perfect choice for homeschooling families, as well as traditional classroom teachers to add to any elementary/junior high science curriculum.
I highly recommend Earth Science, from Rock N Learn, as well as the entire Rock N Learn collection of product. Perfect for your Christmas shopping list!
