My Nutrisystem Journey Week 4 Weigh In

Wow, I can't believe I am at the end of my first month on Nutrisystem! These first four weeks have gone by so fast and I have learned so much. Not only about healthy eating but also about my own person. Sure I have learned about the importance of portion control, water intake, and exercise but I have also realized that I can reach goals that I set out to do. I can get healthy and teach others in my life (family) healthy habits, even my young children. Best of all, I have learned just how much I love feeling full of energy and healthy. Sure, I still have a long way to go on my weight loss journey, but I am on a great start. Thank you Nutrisystem Canada!

So as I end this first month I wanted to tell you my top ten foods that I ate during this month:

1. Blueberry Muffin (breakfast)

2. Banana Nut Muffin (breakfast)

3. Beans and Ham Soup (lunch)

4. Chicken and Pasta in Cacciatore Sauce (lunch)

5. Vegetable Beef Soup (lunch)

6. Vegetable Fajita (dinner)

7. Zesty Cajun Style Chicken and Sausage with Brown Rice (dinner)

8. Chicken Tortilla Soup (very spicy, but so yummy!)  (dinner)

9. Fudge Brownie (dessert/snack)

10. Chocolaty Peanut Butter Bar (dessert/snack)

Don't they all sound delectable? Well, they were. There are so many other great foods I had the opportunity to enjoy and when it came to pick foods for this next month I included many of the above foods, and also added some new ones to try. Can't wait to tell you about those.

I also had a few foods that I was not crazy about. Not that they were bad per say, just not my favorites:

1. Nutriflakes Cereal with Wheat Bran (breakfast)

2. Black Bean Tortilla Soup (lunch)

3. Chicken Salad (lunch)

4. Fettucini Alfredo (lunch)

5. BBQ Sauce Over Beef, Beans and Rice (dinner)

As you can see I liked far more of the Nutrisystem food products, and I am very pleasantly surprised by that. I look forward to trying out a bunch of different products this next month, and will make adjustments appropriately for month three if I have to.

Now the moment you have been waiting for: My Weekly Weigh In!

Starting Weight (January 28, 2011): 174.5lbs (too much!)
Last Week Weight (February 18, 2011): 169lbs
Current Weight (February 26, 2011): 166.9lb (getting there!)
Total weekly loss/gain: LOST 2.1lbs!!!
Total Weight loss to date: 7.6lb

I am feeling really good about losing 7.6lb in just four weeks and cannot wait to see what next month brings. The one thing I did not do this first month is take my body measurements (oops!) but I will be doing that as of March 1, and will do an update at the end of each of the next three months. I know I have lost inches already because my workout wardrobe is looser fitting and I have been able to get into a pair of jeans I have not been able to in about a year! So pumped about that!

Have a great week all!

Then Sings My Soul Saturday

This week has been a relatively low-key, almost stress-free week. Of course, I have the typical family stuff going on, and still a bit of the financial issues happening but during this week I have been routinely reminded how God is always providing for me and my family. I am so thankful to the Lord for everything He continues to teach me. I am so glad to be a mom and wife and I am learning more everyday what it means to be one after God's heart.

Here are a couple songs that I have listened to this week, and they are a couple of my favorites. More and more I am surrendering all to Him (which I should have been doing all along, but as a human tried to do it on my own) and it is amazing to see what He is doing when I only am still and let Him.

For more wonderful, inspirational music head over to Amy at Signs, Miracles and Wonders as she hosts Then Signs My Soul Saturday.

Be blessed!

The Saving Women's Heart Blog Tour and Giveaway

February is Heart Month, and not only because St. Valentine's Day occurs during it. It is during this month that many health practitioners, and associations like the American Heart Association and Canada's Heart and Stroke Foundation emphasize heart healthy living.

Did you know that heart disease is the number one killer of women? I knew it was up there but I honestly thought breast cancer, and other illnesses or accidents were higher in the list. I was wrong.

Heart disease is running rampant in today's society and we can no longer chalk up the occurrences only to genetics. Although that does factor in, lifestyle is the biggest contributor to heart disease, whether male or female. As a women with Type 2 Diabetes, and heart disease in my family history, I know how important it is to keep my heart healthy.

Today I want to share a few tips that will help you keep your heart healthy, or get you back on the right track if you are already experiencing issues like borderline blood pressure and cholesterol. These are tips I have found in the book Saving Women's Hearts, as well as on the Heart and Stroke Foundations website.

1. Exercise

Saving Women's Hearts has a great chart that explains how much exercise women should be getting in order to keep their hearts and bodies healthy.

Health Canada suggests 2.5 hours a week of physical activity, as does the Center for Disease Control. The American College of Sports Medicine suggests 30 minutes daily, five days a week. And, the American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiovascular Disease Prevention in Women recommends 60 minutes a day, most days of the week.

Basically if you are getting 30 minutes daily you are doing great! Getting moving and physical is what your goal should be, and don't be afraid to break up the routine into 10 - 15 minute portions if that is easier for you.

For example, I use the Leslie Sansone Walk At Home workout system and 1 mile of her program is 15 minutes and you will feel great! It gets you sweating and gets your heart pumping! I will typically try to do one mile in each morning and evening....that way I am getting at least 30 minutes of physical activity a day. Well above recommended numbers and I am starting to see a drop in my blood sugars, and cholestoreal which makes my doctor happy!

You can also check out this Take 10 For Your Heart workout and very easily incorporate a 10 minute workout into your daily routine and your heart will thank you!

2. Diet

By incorporating foods that are high in fibre, and low in saturated fats, salt and cholesterol you are being very kind to your heart. If you are following the following "heart friendly diet" from the American Heart Association, you are one step closer to fighting heart disease (as well as obesity)

**.eat a variety of fruits and vegetables (5 servings a day)

**eat a variety of grains (6 servings a day)

**eat fish at least twice a week, preferably fatty fish such as salmon and tuna (full of heart healthy Omega 3's)

**choose legumes, skinless poultry, lean meats and reduced-fat dairy products

**select foods with no more than 2 grams of saturated fats per tablespoon - liquid and tub margarine, and canola, corn, safflower, and olive oils

**limit high-calorie, low-nutrient foods like soft drinks and candy

**limit foods high in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol

**maintain sodium intake to 2,400mg or 1 1/4 teaspoons per day

**limit alcoholic beverages to no more than one drink per day for women
                                                (p.152, Saving Women's Hearts)

Other foods that are heart healthy are almonds, cranberries, cinnamon, legumes, garlic and green tea (the benefits of these foods are detailed in Saving Women's Hearts on pages 154-183

3. Lower Your Stress

As women (and men) we have a lot going on in our lives, and most of these things will cause stress to us at one point or another. Whether is finances, work, kids, extracurricular activities, our lives are busy and at times frustrating. But when you get stressed, you put your heart at risk, particularly for causing heart attacks and stroke.

One of the ways you can lower your stress levels is to prioritize your day (what really needs to be done and what can wait to another day), delegate (kids are great for helping around the house, and getting the "little things" done for you, that way you don't have as much on your plate), drink a lot of water (when we are dehydrated, our bodies get stressed), take B Vitamins as they play a part in your nervous system health (regulating stress), or try relaxation methods like Yoga or Massage (among other methods).

Especially for us moms, the most important way to lower stress is to remember to take time for ourselves. I know this is hard, but try to take 30 minutes out of your day to just relax, have a cup of Green Tea, and read your favorite book, or do an activity you love, but don't normally have time to do.

4. Sleep

Proper sleep is very important in order for us to get through our busy days and nights. But sleep is also important to our heart health. It's not just the lack of sleep that can contribute to health problems and elevated stress, but sleep disorders like Sleep Apnea, Restless Leg Syndrome, Insomnia, and Snoring can also effect our heart by increasing blood pressure, trigger inflammation, promote calcium buildup in the arteries, and cause an irregular heartbeat (p. 224).

Again, Saving Women's Hearts has some great tips for heart healthy sleeping:

**set aside 7-8 hours for sleep

***reserve your bedroom for intimacy and sleep only (no work or tv)
**do relaxing activities before bed (read, warm bath, meditate)
**make your bedroom dark, quiet and comfortable
**avoid long naps during the day
**exercise regularly
**avoid caffeine six hours before bed
**avoid alcohol within four to six hours before bed
**choose bedtime snacks carefully - avoid sugary foods 4-6 hours prior to bedtime, as well as heavy, spicy foods. Good choices are whole-grain crackers and cheese, turkey, a banana, or small bowl of cereal

Now, Saving Women's Hearts by Martha Gulati is full of amazing information. I have only shared a few of the tip I really resonated with. It is an amazing book that, in my opinion, every women needs to read. It has a lot of medical terminology but is clearly defined for the everyday woman to understand!

I highly recommend this book and I am excited to share a giveaway of it with you!

Jesus In The Present Tense: A Book Review

About The Book:

In Jesus in the Present Tense, Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe explores the "I AM" statements of God-from His burning bush conversation with Moses, to His powerful reassurances to the Israelites, to Jesus's startling claim to be the Light of the World.

Many Christians find themselves mired in past regrets or future fears, but the name of God itself reminds readers that God wants them to live in the present. The more readers understand and apply God's I AM statements from the Old and New Testaments, the more they will realize God's peace and joy. Then they will be free to live, serve, and know God more richly in the present tense-which is just where He wants them to be.

About The Author:

Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe is an internationally known Bible teacher and the former pastor of three churches, including the Moody Church in Chicago. For ten years he served as general director and Bible teacher for the Back to the Bible radio broadcast. Dr. Wiersbe has written more than 150 books, including the popular "Be" series of expositional Bible studies, which has sold more than four million copies. In 2002, he was awarded the Jordon Lifetime Achievement Award by the Evangelical Christian Publishers Association. He and his wife, Betty, live in Lincoln, Nebraska.

My Review:

As many of you know, I am a very big fan of Warren Wiersbe. I have been since my Bible College days and I continue to be challenged and inspired by his work. His most recent release, Jesus In The Present Tense, is a great read, and does not disappoint for long time fans of Wiersbe!

In nine places in the Old Testament, the Lord “filled out” or “completed” the name I AM to reveal more fully His divine nature and His gracious ministry to His people.

·         Yahweh-Jire – The Lord who provides (Genesis 22:14)
·         Yahweh-Rophe – The Lord who heals (Exodus 15:26)
·         Yahweh-Nissi – The Lord our banner (Exodus 17:15)
·         Yahweh- M’Kaddesh – The Lord who sanctifies (Leviticus 20:8)
·         Yahweh-Shalom – The Lord our peace (Judges 6:24)
·         Yahweh-Rohi – The Lord our shepherd (Psalm 23:1)
·         Yahweh-Sabaoth – The Lord of hosts (Psalm 46:7)
·         Yahweh-Tsidkenu – The Lord our righteousness (Jeremiah 23:6)
·         Yahweh-Shammah – The Lord is there (Ezekiel 48:35)

Wiersbe takes you on a journey through the nine "I AM" statements and helps you move from regrets of the past and fears of the future, and instead dwell on Him and the plans He has for you, not your plans

If you are looking for a book that will challenge you to live your life for Him, you need to read this book. My favorite line of the book is from the very last page!

"Paul wrote, "But by the grace of God I am what I am" (1 Cor. 15:10). If you and I want that same kind of testimony, we must live in the present tense, abiding in Jesus Christ, who says "I AM." (p. 187).

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!

My Review:

With a cast of characters that will tug at your heartstrings and enough suspense and intrigue to keep you reading late into the night.  This is the first of Ann Tatlock's novels I have had the pleasure of reading, even with it being her eighth piece. However, I will definitely be seeking out more of Tatlock's novels in the future. Included in the book is a discussion guide, perfect for moms groups, book clubs and even individual reflection. With topics like alcoholism, depression, domestic violence, coming of age, dealing with aging, and racial tensions during the 1960's you will discover how God is in the middle of all these experiences and makes people better because of them.

Larkspur Cove: A Book Review

About The Book:

Lisa Wingate's Rich Novel Glows with Faith and Hope
Moses Lake was a constant place, on the surface. But you can't always tell by looking, what might be brewing underneath...

After surviving the worst year of her life, Andrea Henderson moves home to sleepy little Moses Lake, Texas, to recover her shattered faith and build a new life for herself and her son.

Game Warden Mart McClendon finds himself in Moses Lake for a different reason: to forget a tragedy for which he can't forgive himself.

But when a mysterious little girl is suddenly seen with the town recluse, these two unlikely allies are drawn together in a search for her identity. As wounded pasts collide, will their quest bring the redemption and hope they need--or consequences neither of them expected?

About The Author:

Lisa Wingate is a popular inspirational speaker, magazine columnist, and national bestselling author of several books, includingTending Roses, A Month of Summer, and The Summer Kitchen. Lisa and her family live in central Texas. Visit www.lisawingate.com

My Review:

With heart-felt honesty, delightful characters, examinations of social class differences, discussion of the issues in the social services departments in America, and teen/parent relationships you will quite enjoy Larkspur Cove. I know I did. There is a little something for every one, including a budding romance.

The book will keep your reading from the first time you pick it up until the very last page. It is a very engaging read and I read it in about two days. There are a couple statements in the book that clearly sum up the book and its themes:

"In the stillness was a voice, soft like the mourning dove, yet persistent like the endless refrains of the mockingbird. It beckoned me with its sweetness, warmed my soul, comforted my heart, promised that even when I'd been loneliest, in the deepest despair, even when I thought I was lost in the darkness, I was never really alone. God had been there, even when I could not see Him, even when I could not hear His call, even when I denied His presence. He had been there in the wilderness, as He is in all places. I had only to be still, and listen, and let Him lead me home." (p.351-52)

In the very last scene of the book, the family teenager is flying kites, and it reminds the main character Andrea of doing the same activity as a child with her grandfather and something he said to her:

"A kite is like a man's life," my granddad had said as I weighed the choice between letting that kite soar and holding it down. "No matter how much he tries, he can't make it more than a piece of paper and a ball of twine, on his own. He's got to give it over to the something bigger, let the Good Lord breathe into it. After that, he just has to do two things - turn his eyes toward heaven and keep hold of the string" (p. 355)

What an amazing piece of advice as we walk our life journey with the Lord! He will guide us through everything, good and bad, we just have to keep our eye on Him.

I highly recommend this book and give it a HUGE thumbs up!

Another Dawn: Book Review

About The Book:

What Would You Give for a Second Chance to Make Things Right?

When life gets complicated, Grace Graham runs. She's left romantic relationships, friendships, and even her family after the death of her mother. But now her sister, Jana, is giving her once last chance: Come home and help care for their father--whom Grace still blames for her mother's death--or never show her face in Shoal Creek, Tennessee, again.

With her son, Dylan, in tow, Grace returns home from California. But is she returning for the right reasons? And when costly decisions from the past suddenly put her son's life and the lives of other children in town at risk, will she have the strength to stand strong and await Another Dawn?

About The Author:

Kathryn Cushman is a graduate of Samford University with a degree in pharmacy. After practicing as a pharmacist, she left her career to marry and begin a family and has since pursued her dream of writing. Leaving Yesterday is her third novel. Kathryn and her family currently live in Santa Barbara, California. Visit Kathryn's Web site atwww.kathryncushman.com

My Review:

I have been a fan of Kathryn Cushman since reading Leaving Yesterday last year. She draws you into the book from the first page with page-turning drama, current topics that play out through the book, lovable and relatable characters and really easy-to-read writing. Another Dawn is another example of all of these points.

Without spoiling the book for you all, the main plot revolves around the controversy of not vaccinating children and what happens when a childhood illness, like Measles, spreads as a result. There are some very heart-wrenching moments in this book, and as a mom I was in tears many times as I read.

The issue of vaccines in Another Dawn is a very current one and it is very evident that a lot of research had gone on by the author in order to include many of the facts and figures that she has. I also love that she has includes the most recent evidents of refuting Andrew Wakefield's work correlating Autism and Childhood Vaccines. Cushman takes a very controversial subjects and shares all points of view, with no obvious bias of her own. Though a fictional writing Another Dawn could happen to any town in America (or Canada, in my case) and that is what made reading it so great - it brought together fiction and real-life in a fantastic manner. I look forward to going back and reading her other books!

I highly recommend reading Another Dawn by Kathryn Cushman and give it a huge thumbs up!

Kathi “Easy Writer” Macias lives in Homeland, CA, with her husband, Al, where the two of them spend their free time buzzing around in their new ride: Al’s 2005 sunburst orange Corvette.

My Review:

An absolutely stunning book that makes a perfect gift for any mother in your life. As you read through this powerful book, you will meet fifteen of the best known mother's from the Bible. You will be brought on a journey that will encourage you and inspire you. Even though I am very familiar with many of the mothers mentioned in Macias' book, I learned so many new things, and was reminded about many other truths that God has taught me over the years. I love that each chapter includes a scripture reading, study questions (perfect for individual devotions or a group study) and quotations throughout the book about motherhood.

One part of the book that really resonated with was chapter six, Hannah. The Bible mother has been an inspiration to me as I too went through a time of struggling to conceive and was given a miracle of two beautiful girls. One part of this chapter says this:

"Oh, that we would remember Hannah's example when we've prayed long and hard, weeping in intercession, and then seen God answer mercifully and miraculously! That we would have grateful hearts, hearts of integrity that would not turn back from fulfilling our vows to the faithful God who lovingly meets our every need! That we would take time to stop and thank God for every answered prayer, to acknowledge that

"every good and perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of Lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning" (James 1:17).

And that we would then say, Therefore God's gift to us, His answered prayers, require a response of gratitude and integrity, and to turn over to our faithful God the very things that are most precious to us here on Earth - even and especially our beloved children - so that He may fulfill His purpose and bring glory to His name, in and through our lives - and theirs" (p.108)

Isn't that amazing! Seriously, if one of your plans this year is to study the women and moms of the Bible, I highly recommend using Mothers of the Bible Speak to Mothers of Today by Kathi Macias as a reference. You will not be disappointed. Written in a very conversational manner, I felt like Kathi was sitting right in the room with me and reading to me. A perfect book to read in its entirety or one chapter at a time for character studies.

A perfect gift for every mom or mom-to-be in your life!

My Review:

Being in a blended family has it's share of trials and experiences for families to deal with. That is the premise of this book. But the main theme is forgiveness, moving on from the past and remembering that throughout difficult times God is always there and always in control. His ways may not always make sense to us, but He will reveal His reasoning in His time.

His Other Wife introduces you to a great cast of characters and you will be drawn into the life situations and crisis' from page one. You will not want to put this book down. Actually, I could totally visualize the scenes as I read and feel this book would make a fantastic movie!

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!

My Review:

With dramatic scenes and life-altering events you will meet a cast of characters that will impact you in a way you would never expect from a novel. The main character, Boone,  has been dealt a blow that is unimaginable and you are taken on his journey through the grieving process.

A very powerful book that keep me in tears for much of it, and reminded just how fleeting life is and to cherish every moment with my family.  I was also reminded that in every situation I encounter, God is in complete control. In both the good, and especially the bad. He has brought me through some tough situations in the last few years (not as difficult as Boone, but difficult just the same) and I am so glad that He brought me through them.

The main lesson I learned in reading The Brotherhood by Jerry B. Jenkins that even in the darkest of times, God is in control and I just have to Let Go and Let God bring me through the valley.

I have been a fan of Jerry B. Jenkins since the Left Behind Series, and I look forward to reading the rest of this series.

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up.
