20(4)40 Challenge - Day 4

Lenten Challenge

This morning I woke up at my normal time of 5:45am, and typically by 6:30am my youngest daughter (2.5yo) greets me with a smile. So when her dad woke up at 7:15 and she still was not awake, I knew she must not be feeling well. Just before he left for work, she waddled out of the room, with bright red checks and announced, "I not feel good mommy!" I checked her temp, gave the meds and spent the next couple hours snuggling with her on the couch.

Certainly, not what was on the agenda for the day, but instead of complaining, I chose to find the gifts that came out of the situation.

As the morning went on, she felt better enough to play and that has allowed me to accomplish a few things, and be reminded of all the gifts I have everyday.

1. praying for my children

2. doing my devotions as the sun comes up

3. completing a full workout with no distractions

4. the smell of coffee brewing

5. books

6. a new blog to follow

7. His peace

8. capturing life on camera

9. praying for a friend

10. being reminded that I am not perfect and that is okay

11. my day planner

12. flexibility to not have to follow my to-do list

13. not complaining all morning

14. a clean kitchen

15. a messy kitchen that is evidence of a productive morning

16. making summer trip plans

17. Oma and Opa babysitting

18. smiles and smooches from my girls

19. being greeted at the door by my puppy

20. watching a favorite tv program

What are you grateful for today....can you think of 20 things you can be grateful for, in spite of the tough stuff happening, or life's interupptions?

Check out A Minute Captured for the 20(4)40 Lent Challenge today!

Be blessed,

Capture The Everyday

So I found this fantastic new meme to participate in and I would love to share it with you!

Adventuroo

Capture the Everyday is about getting you to capture those everyday moments in your life! Each Thursday, I’ll issue a simple challenge to capture something that’s a part of your daily life. You can post just a picture or add some words to go along with it. You’ll have a week to get it done and then I’ll issue another. It’s a quick, easy way to start capturing those little parts of life we sometimes take for granted.

What a perfect theme for me (as you all know, I love to read!)

As a book reviewer, I have the priviledge of reading some amazing books. The photo above shows only three of the wonderful books I am currently reading, as well as my ESV Study Bible.

1. One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp - This book has changed my life, and the lives of countless others. I have learned to embrass the discipline of Eucharisteo, being thankful, even in the everyday small things. I will be doing a full review very soon.

2. Feminine Appeal: Seven Virtues of a Godly Wife and Mother by Carolyn Mahaney - a wonderful read that has truly inspired me to embrace my role as a Christian wife and mother.

3. She's Gonna Blow:Real Help For Moms Dealing With Anger by Julie Ann Barnhill - a fantastic read that shows moms that anger is okay, but there is more productive ways to handle it!

4. ESV Study Bible - a wonderful translation of the Bible with fabulous study helps throughout. I am just finishing the book of Revelation, as part of the Bible In 90 Days and getting ready to participate in Blogging Through The Gospels at Moms Toolbox.

20(4)40 Challenge - Day 3

Lenten Challenge

What an incredibly busy day today, but it was the perfect day for seeing the gift of "small things" in my everyday.  I am so thankful to God for placing in my life authors like Ann at A Holy Experience and blogs like A Minute Captured that help me to remember the gifts of the the small things.

I love it when God takes me to a place in my day where I learn a lesson He has been trying to teach me for a long time. That happened today.

As I mentioned earlier this week, I am trying to complain less, not only due to Lent, but just to make myself a better woman, wife, and mom after His heart.

Instead of complaining, I am choosing joy. Even when I would rather complain, when life does not go according to my plans for the day, when I am hurt, tired and ready to have a mommy melt down, I CHOOSE JOY!

During this last year, the hardest one of my entire life, I have realized I am not in control of those things that are out of my control. The only thing that I can control is my reaction to those things....the rest I have to give up to God. And despite hurt, pain, frustration, anger, guilt and all the other emotions that can result, I CHOOSE JOY.

Joy.

A small, but powerful word.

When you are confronted by life, and the busyness of your day, do you choose joy?

When you have a child who is grumpy because they refused to nap, spilled milk on the floor, too much on the to-do list and not enough time to do it all, choose joy.

When you burn supper, don't get that workout in, and you lose the document you were typing out, CHOOSE JOY!

When someone says a hurtful word to you, your alarm does not go off on time, or you burn your hand on the stove, CHOOSE JOY!

Whatever comes your way in your everyday life, whoever you interact with on a daily basis, no matter what you are going through in life, instead of instinctively complaining about it, CHOOSE JOY!

Not always an easy thing to do, I will be the first to admit, I don't always choose joy first. But when we cling to Him to help us through our days, it is so much easier to CHOOSE JOY!

Here are a few passages of scripture that have blessed me and reminded me to CHOOSE JOY this week:

joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones. Proverbs 17: 22

I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength Philippians 4:13 (He can, and will, give you the strength you need to choose joy)

Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth; break forth into joyous song and sing praises! Psalm 98:4

And I commend joy, for man has no good thing under the sun but to eat and drink and be joyful, for this will go with him in his toil through the days of his life that God has given him under the sun. Ecclesiastes 8:15

The joy of the Lord is your strength Nehemiah 8:10

Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds James 1:2

As I strive to choose joy in my everyday, here are a few gifts from today.

1. Wednesday night Bible Study

2. a visit with my in-laws

3. a lunch/play date with a great friend

4. an afternoon play date

5. listening to my girls at play

6. my husband helping me prepare dinner, even after working hard all day, just because

7. potty training (and subsequent accidents)

20(4)40 Challenge - Day 2

I am loving this glorious Spring weather that we are finally experiencing here in Southern Alberta. The sounds of birds, the sun, the melting snow all show me the fingerprints of God in such tangible ways. Ever since reading One Thousands Gifts by Ann Voskamp, and following her blog, A Holy Experience, I have made it a practice to daily journal those "small things" that I am grateful for in my day.

During Lent many people give up things to help them focus on the sacrifice that Christ gave of His life on the cross that Good Friday so many years ago. This year, instead of giving something up, I decided to add gratitude to my day more intentionally. For every complaint I have in my day, I want to think of five things I am grateful, and record them in my journal. This practice has been so amazing for me. Now, I am human, and of course there are days when there seems to be far more complaints than gratitude coming out of my mouth and mind. However, this practice of writing down the things that make me grateful...the small things in my everyday...have made me a much better person.

Lenten Challenge

As I mentioned yesterday I am in a challenge called the 20(4)40 Lenten Challenge, hosted by A Minute Captured. Today is Day 2 and here is my list for today.

20(4)40 Challenge - Day 1

As many of you have noticed, I am loving the challenge I have been given in reading One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp. Deliberately recording those things that bless me on a daily basis has been so awesome and I have really enjoyed sharing my 1000 gifts list with you, my readers.

Lenten Challenge

Today, I found the coolest challenge that incorporates the concept of Ann's book, called the 20(4)40 Lenten Challenge. It is hosted by a great blog I recently discovered, A Minute Captured and I cannot wait to jump in! Although the challenge started on the first day of Lent and goes until Easter Sunday, I have decided to still do the challenge. I hope you will to.

1. playing Candyland with my 4.5 year old while her little sister naps

2. time to have a cup of tea while reading my Bible this morning

3. melting snow

4. hugs from my 2.5 yr old daughter

5. snuggles from my little girls

6. curling up on the couch to read with my girls

7. family movie nights

8. a new cookbook

9. warm sun shining through the window of my kitchen

10. praise and worship music that lifts my spirit

11. good morning kisses and hugs

12. the sound of children playing outside

13. an encouraging email

15. making homemade cookies for my family

16. the smell of coffee first thing in the morning

17. hearing my children sing Bible songs

18. good news given to me on the phone

19. hearing the "why" questions from my girls

20. the beauty of Springtime

Won't you join me in this journey as I continue to count my blessings for all that my Lord has given to me each day!

Be blessed,

Menu Plan Monday

Well it has been a long time since I have participated in Menu Plan Monday, so I decided to join back on! I have really embraced the whole "homemade" meals and baking over the last couple years. I grew up in a Mennonite/Italian household, so as you can imagine, there was never a shortage of food in the house:) \

Although my mom tried to teach the basics of cooking and baking, I really showed little to no interest. This really did not help me much after I moved out on my own. I ended up doing mostly processed food cooking and easy to make stuff, so typical of a college student to be sure. When I got married, my attitude about meal preparation and baking really did not change much. Thankfully, I was blessed with a husband who liked to cook (he still does!) and therefore, I handed the reins over to him. For the most part he did not mind, but I know he got frustrated that he would come home from working all day and still have to make a meal. We actually took turns cooking from time to time, but I will admit he did the majority of cooking until we had children.

Since having children, it is like a light switch turned on. Now, I cannot get enough cookbooks, and try out new recipes! I love it. Yes, most times my family is my food testers, but I am very happy to report that most recipes have been received with tons of positive comments and are definite make-again ones. Over the last four years I have tried many new recipes and this week will not be any different. I picked up a cookbook of Amish, Hutterite and Mennonite recipes on the weekend and am hoping to test out some of the recipes over this coming week.

Now for my menu for the week:

Monday - Soft Taco Bake

Tuesday - Perogies, Farmer Sausage, Cornbread, Salad

Wednesday - CrockPot Chili, Salad

Thursday - Chicken StirFry and Rice

Friday - Grilled Cheese Sandwich and Tomato Soup, Carrot Sticks and Dip

Saturday - Spaghetti and Meatballs (made with ground turkey), mixed veggies

Sunday - Grilled Salmon, Asparagus, Mashed Potatoes

What is on your menu today? Head over and visit Laura at I'm An Organizing Junkie to link up your menu!

Multitude Monday: My Gratitude List Continues

As I read through One Thousand Gift by Ann Voskamp, creator of A Holy Experience, and host of Multitude Mondays, I have learned so much. I have learned that life is not an emergency (to slow down), that blessings and gifts come even (and especially) in the small, everyday occurrences of life, and that I am so blessed.

The whole I idea of being grateful is not a new concept to me, but daily seeking out the blessings in my life and recording them in my 1000 Gifts Journal is. I am loving it and have even started to incorporate the concept with my oldest daughter (she is 4.5 yr). I try to daily talk with her about what God has given to her, and to thank God for all those gifts (blessings). Though she cannot write these things down just yet, I am so glad that she is so verbal in speaking them! Thank you Lord for teachable moments

Here is some more from my list:

#45 Being cancer free for almost six years!

#46 tea parties with my girls

#47 the hardest two years of my life

#48 the lessons learned as part of those two years

#49 forgiveness given and received

#50 the questions of "why" and "what" from my 4.5 yr old daughter

#51 hearing the words, "read to me Mommy"

#52 a heart changing

#53. listening to praise and worship music

#54 the sound of children's laughter

Be Blessed this week as you look for your blessings in your everyday!

Then Sings My Soul Saturday

During the last several weeks, during my quiet/devotional time, I have spent time reading and studying the names of the Lord. From I AM to Emmanuel to My Resting Place and more, I am in awe of the one I call my Heavenly Father and the King of Kings. He has brought me through so much in the last few years and He has been my shelter, healer, friend, admonisher and more. I am so grateful for all He is and it does not matter what I call Him, He is my God alone and forever! I will never be able to repay all He has done for me, but what I can do is praise Him and live my life for Him.

For more inspirational songs, head over and visit Amy at Signs, Miracles and Wonders to check out Then Sings My Soul Saturday.

My Nutrisystem Journey Week 8 Weigh In

This week was once again a busy one! Just when we thought Spring was around the corner, we got hit with more snow here in Southern Alberta. I have been looking forward to the warmer weather so that I could get out and walk in the warm sun and fresh air. Hopefully today will be that day, as the forecast is calling for a beautiful day (finally!)

This week I felt like I had a ton of energy, and just overall felt awesome. I know that losing weight is part of that. And thanks to Nutrisystem Canada, I am well on my way to being a much healthier person! Thanks Nutrisystem.

This week I made a bit of a change to my exercise and added more of the Free Run and Free Step on the Wii Fit Plus. Last year I lost almost 25lb using the Wii Fit program....and then promptly fell off the exercise bandwagon and gained the majority of it back. This time though will be different. I think that losing weight by making changes to the way I eat first has been a key component to my attitude change. So now I am doing my Walk At Home daily routine, as well as I am going to do the Wii Fit Plus program three times a week for the added aerobic component.

I am very excited to see what the next week brings and now am also excited to tell you my weekly results!

Starting Weight (January 28, 2011): 174.5lbs (too much!)

Last Week Weight (March 19, 2011): 163.4
Current Weight (March 25, 2011): 161.8lb (getting there!)
Total weekly loss/gain: LOST 1.6lbs!!! (WooHoo!!)
Total Weight loss to date: 12.7lb!!!!

I am going to be entering my third month with Nutrisystem Canada this week, and feeling confident that many more positive changes are in store for me. I love that you all are on this journey with me!

For more information about the Nutrisystem Canada program, check it out here!

Have a great week!

****In return for participating in the Nutrisystem Canada's Blogger Program, I am being provided with free food. In return, I will be blogging about my experience in an honest manner. I have not been compensated in any other manner****

Billy Kelly - The Family Garden CD: A Review and Giveaway!

Billy Kelly is a singer/songwriter/performer/animator/illustrator/entertainer/guy from Pennsylvania. His debut children's music CD, Thank You For Joining The Happy Club (2009) was released to widespread critical acclaim and landed on several "Best of 2009" lists. For a follow-up Billy recruited none other than Davy Jones (the Monkee, not the pirate) for a duet on his second disc, Is This Some Kind Of Joke (2010)  - a musical comedy album that found its way into the "Top 10 Albums of 2010" on the respected children's music review blog Zooglobble.

Billy's wry, sardonic humor and catchy melodies are finding a national audience thanks in part to a glowing review on National Public Radio, steady airplay from Sirius/XM Satellite Radio - where his song, "People Really Like Milk" was a #1 hit - and his ambitious tour schedule with his band The Blahblahblahs. His quirky animated music videos and snazzy web site (thebillykellyshow.com) don't hurt him any either.

For 2011 Billy is back with The Family Garden, a jaunty (yes, jaunty) new cd showcasing his usual goofy songs, some impromptu jams, two cover songs - Rock Lobster, anyone? - and lots of off-the-cuff banter. Jumping from country to ragtime to rock, The Family Garden literally offers something for everyone, except people who don't like country, ragtime, or rock. Trust us, these people exist. Anyway, everyone else is gonna love it!

Billy's 2011 goals include performing one million concerts for kids, winning seven Grammies, getting his own TV show, and inventing the self-cleaning baby.

When not making music, Billy Kelly enjoys spending time with his family, writing poems, drawing pictures, and working in his garden.

My Review:

Music is a huge thing in our home, and we have all kinds, including a lot of children's music. When I look for children's music, of course I want my girls to like it, but I also want to make sure that I will be okay with listening to it for hours on end...particularly on road trips that we do regularly. The Family Garden is one of those CD's.

We have had an absolute blast listening to The Family Garden by Billy Kelly over the last few weeks! It is a fun CD, that is packed with 37 minutes of pure energy. You and your children both will find yourself dancing and moving to The Family Garden for a long time.

Some of our favorite tracks include the title track, Why Is The Moon Following Me? (my daughter, 4.5 yrs, says it reminds her of Harold and The Purple Crayon), Scootdootdoodlydoo (love the title!), The Happy Happy Whistling Song, and It's A Wonderful Life! The whole CD is so fun, and I am definitely going to see about getting Billy Kelly's other work for sure after being delighted by The Family Garden. We are also enjoying The Family Garden within the home daycare that I run and the children I care for during the week are loving it too! All the songs are great for playing musical games like Musical Chairs and Music Freeze! I have also recommended Billy Kelly to some of my friends that have home daycare businesses too!

If you are looking for eccentric, fun, and high energy music for the entire family, I highly recommend Billy Kelly's The Family Garden! A great gift idea for any family and child!

I give this CD a HUGE thumbs up!

Angel Sister: A Book Review

About The Book:

It is 1936 and Kate Merritt is trying hard to keep her family together. Her father has slipped into alcoholism, her mother tries to come to grips with their dire financial situation, and her sisters seem to remain blissfully oblivious to all of it. Kate could never have imagined that a dirty, abandoned little girl named Lorena Birdsong would be just what her family needs.

In this richly textured novel, award-winning author Ann H. Gabhart reveals the power of true love, the freedom of forgiveness, and the strength to persevere through troubled times, all against the backdrop of a sultry Kentucky summer.

Read an excerpt of Angel Sister online here (in PDF format)

About The Author:

Living just thirty miles from a restored Shaker village in Kentucky, Ann H. Gabhart has walked the same paths that her characters might have walked in generations past. Her thorough research provides a convincing and colorful backdrop for her Shaker novels. Gabhart is the author of several bestselling novels, including The Outsider, The Believer,The Seeker, and Angel Sister.

My Review:

With beautiful writing, real-to-life characters, and circumstances that will have you in tears at times, and laughing at others, you will be drawn into the life of a 1930's family. This family is struggling with brokeness and despair, and the journey to move on from the past as you trust in God and allow Him to be all you need, and mold you into the exact person you were always meant to be. A stunning book that had me from page one, and though very intense, with a few great twists and turns along the way, was a page turner to the end.

I highly recommend this book, and give it a thumbs up!

A Heart Most Worthy: A Book Review

About The Book:

Romance Abounds in this Engaging Novel

Julietta is drawn to the swarthy, mysterious Angelo. Annamaria has a star-crossed encounter with the grocer's son, a man from the entirely wrong family. And through no intent of her own, Luciana catches the eye of Billy Quinn, the son of Madame Forza's most important client. Their destinies intertwined, each harboring a secret from their families and each other, will they be found worthy of the love they seek?

You can read an excerpt of A Heart Most Worthy here.

About The Author:

Siri Mitchell is the author of nearly a dozen novels, among them the critically acclaimed Christy Award finalists Chateau of Echoesand The Cubicle Next Door. A graduate of the University of Washington with a degree in business, she has worked in many different levels of government. As military spouse, she has lived in places as varied as Tokyo and Paris. Siri currently lives in the DC-metro area.

Visit www.sirimitchell.com for more information on the author.

My Review:

I have had the pleasure of reading Siri Mitchell's work, She Walks In Beauty, and loved it. So when the chance arose to review her most recent novel, A Heart Most Worthy, I was very excited.

The book is very well written, and it very evident that a ton of research was done to make it as historically accurate as possible. You will follow the lives of three women over a number of years and you will fall in love the characters. They are wonderful. The way that A Heart Most Worthy draws you in is amazing and I love how much the lives of these women intertwine. What I really appreciated was that the author lets you know that initially you make be confused by the story's of the women, but it does not take long for all the story lines to fall into place.

If you are a Christian Historical Fiction fan you will love the themes of history, romance, friendship, and overcoming difficulties that occur as a result of immigration.

I highly recommend A Heart Most Worthy by Siri Mitchell and give it a huge thumbs up!

My Review:
What a fantastic resource for mom's of all ages and stages of parenting! There is something for everyone. In a well written, and amazingly organized manner, the author covers topics from discipline to party planning to finances and more. I have learned so much from this book and I know you will too.

In part one of the book, Elwell takes an acrynom of the word MOTHER and applies Proverbs 31 to it. It really opened my eyes to what I know the Lord wants me to be as a mom and I was so excited to read this:

M-merciful
O-Observant
T-trustworthy
H-Helpful
E-Energetic
R-Reverent towards God
H-honored
O-orator of Wisdom
O-of noble character
D-Dignified

As I read through The Christian Mom's Idea Book, these are just a couple points that really impacted me:

"How are we doing? Are we living lives before God that are worthy of our children's respect? (p. 24)

"What a host of choices we make in our speech every day -0 in our early-morning words, our getting-read words, our telephone words, our reminder words, our mealtime words, our bedtime words. The actual words, the tone of voice we use, and the timing are all significant in communicating to those around us. Not only does the woman of excellence run an orderly house, but she has an orderly heart, which flows into orderly speech. About The Author:
Hayley Rose grew up in the beach side town of Pacific Palisades , California, to a family of visual artists.  In the early 1990’s she traveled the U.S. with her band Crush Violet.  In 1994, after a family reunion, she was inspired to write a children’s book.  Looking for a cute and catchy name for a main character, she kept hearing “first in, first out”.  Hence, the name Fifo was born.  Hayley’s mother would often ask her what she wanted to be when she grew up, so Hayley decided to start her series of “Fifo” books with that very question.  Her first book, Fifo “When I Grow Up” was published in 2002.  Her love of travel inspired her second book in the Fifo series, Fifo “50 States”, published in 2010.
Along with writing children’s books, Hayley has been working in entertainment business management for the past 15 years, specializing in concert touring.  She has worked with many “A list” musicians including Michael Jackson, Rod Stewart and Candlebox just to name a few.  Hayley hopes to one day soon release an album of children’s songs.  She is a currently member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and resides in Los Angeles, CA.

CALIFORNIA
Out in the west
Lies the 31st state,
It is called California
And I hear it’s just great.
Sacramento is the capital
And there are many things to see,
Like the Golden Poppy flower
And the California Redwood tree..
The bird, the California Quail,
Lives in California too.
It’s a wonderful place to visit
I’d like to go there wouldn’t you?
State Motto: I Have Found It

My Review:
This is an absolutely delightful book for children of all ages, but particularly four to ten year olds. Each of the 50 states are individually emphasized with beautiful, bright illustrations. The rhymes are so fun and very catchy. I found myself so amused and enjoyed the book as much as my children.
My four year old especially loved reading it, and in fact, we have read it multiple times, particularly the Texas pages. Her aunt and uncle live there, so it was very exciting for her to see that page. Each illustration includes whimsical drawings of State landmarks, flags, and more. This will make the perfect gift for children of all ages! This is an ideal book for any preschool, kindergarten and early elementary classroom or home school program. You can take Fifo 50 States and build a complete Unit Study or Lap Book based on a single State with very little difficulty. I used some of the Texas info and found some coloring sheets for my girls to use of the flag, and I plan to help my four year make a special gift for my sister using the book as reference!
Although my children love this book, and I feel it important that they know about the United States, especially with us here in Canada, I think this book is just a perfect gift idea for my soon to be born nephew in Texas!
I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!
