People Of The Book Blog Tour and Review

About The Book:

Will God protect and keep them safe in the midst of persecution?

Farah lives in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with her family, and wants nothing more than to develop a deeper devotion to her Muslim faith. She sees the month of Ramadan as her chance to draw nearer to Allah, and pursues that goal. All goes well until the prophet Isa—Jesus—appears to her in a dream and calls her to Himself. Her brother, Kareem, who has never liked her, seeks to discredit her.

Farah’s cousin, an only child, frequents an online chat. She discovers former Muslims discussing their new belief that Isa is much more than a Muslim prophet—He is actually the Son of God. She becomes acquainted wit
h an American girl of Muslim ancestry—now a devout Christian—Sara. Sara has problems of her own due to her brother Emir’s suspicious behavior.

Each finds their faith put to the test. Will they be true to their beliefs? Will God protect them, or will they pay the ultimate price for their faith?

Interview With The Author:

People of the Book is the fourth and final book in your Extreme Devotion series. Each book is set in a different country, with the theme of first devotion and commitment to Christ above all else running through all four. How is People of the Book different, and who/what inspired you to write this book?

People of the Book was the most difficult of the four Extreme Devotion series books to write, but it is also the strongest when it comes to a call to personal commitment to Christ and to the fulfillment of the Great Commission. With each of the books, I began drafting the manuscripts through Internet research, since I had never lived in any of the four countries and had only visited one of them. After the original draft, I worked with someone who either currently lived in the country or who had recently spent many years there. People of the Book was the toughest because the Saudi women I connected with via the Internet were understandably apprehensive about associating with me. Most, in fact, were terrified to do so. I was therefore quite pleased to meet a young woman named Dolly Dahdal here in the States who, until just a few years ago, had spent the majority of her life in Saudi Arabia and understood perfectly why I had chosen to write this book. We shared a passion to help expose the fallacy of “honor killings,” a horrific crime perpetrated primarily against women and girls who in some way bring “dishonor” on their Muslim families, and Dolly was a major contributor to the authenticity of this book.

Can you give us a brief synopsis of this story?

Eighteen-year-old Farah, who lives in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, with her family, wants nothing more than to develop a deeper, more meaningful devotion to her Muslim faith. She sees the month of Ramadan as her chance to draw nearer to Allah, and she pursues that goal throughout the holiday. All goes well until the prophet Isa—Jesus—appears to her in a dream and calls her to Himself. At the same time, her only brother, Kareem, who has never liked Farah, actively seeks an opportunity to expose her for the sham he believes she is.

Meanwhile, Farah’s seventeen-year-old cousin, Nura, has begun to frequent an online chat room where former Muslims gather to discuss their new faith, based on their belief that Isa is much more than a Muslim prophet—He is actually the Son of God. While there, Nura becomes acquainted with an American girl of Muslim ancestry—now a devout Christian named Sara—and a friendship quickly develops. However, Sara has problems of her own due to her fifteen-year-old brother Emir’s involvement with a gang.

The lives of Farah, Nura, and Sara ultimately dovetail until each finds herself at a place where her faith is put to the test. Will they remain faithful to the end? Will God protect and keep them safe in the midst of persecution and treachery? Or will they be required to pay the ultimate price for their faith?

Kathi, how did you get into writing? Has it always been your passion, or is it something you came to later in life?

I’ve always wanted to write, for as long as I can remember. I was an avid reader even before I started kindergarten. I wrote a short story in third grade that the teacher liked so much she showed it to the principal, and they decided to turn it into a play for the entire PTA. I was hooked! One day when I was about 13, I was walking home from school with my then boyfriend (now husband), Al, and I told him I’d be a writer some day. He often reminds me how blessed I am to have been able to do what I dreamed of all my life.

I understand you’re running a special contest that has to do with this book. Can you tell us about it?

Not only are there several opportunities to win a copy of the book on various blog sites included in this tour, but I’m giving away the entire four-book series at the end of the tour to someone who leaves a comment on one of the blogs, so be sure to check them all out and leave comments on each one!

In addition to writing, you are a popular speaker at women’s event, writers’ conferences, and various venues around the country. How can people find out more about you, your writing and speaking, sign up for your weekly devotional newsletter (in English or Spanish), and/or just view your many book videos, etc.?

They can find me at one of my websites (http://www.kathimacias.com;http://www.theTitus2Women.com) or on my Easy Writer blog athttp://kathieasywritermacias.blogspot.com. There is a “contact” button on my Kathi Macias website if they’d like to send me a message. I always respond to all my emails!

My Review:

I was introduced to the writing of Kathi Macias in October 2009 when I had the opportunity to read My Son, John (see my review here). Since that time I have read five others by this wonderful author and she has quickly become one of my favorite authors in the last two years. I am so thankful to the Lord for placing this author's work in my life.
People Of The Book follows the lives of two very different countries and cultures, and how Jesus penetrates through these differences, even when we fight Him. This book shows the reader just how wonderful it is to have the religious freedoms we have here in North America. It gives you a glimpse into the life that non-Muslims will face living in a Muslim country and the dangers they face as well.
An absolutely stunning book that is thus far my favorite of this authors. I could not put this book down, and read it in only two days! The entire Extreme Devotion Series is wonderful but this is my favorite of the four books for sure!
Kathi Macias has a new series coming out in Fall 2011, called Freedom and I cannot wait to read it!
I highly recommend this book and give it a HUGE thumbs up!

My Review:

Once again, I have the wonderful opportunity to introduce a fantastic book from author, Kathi Macias. Valeria's Cross is a historical fiction novel that will bring you back to the times of the Romans and Early Christianity. There is a little bit of everything for all historical fiction fans all in one book.

What I enjoyed the most about this book is just how evident it is that a ton of research was done to make this book so historically accurate. The physical descriptions of landmarks, the persecution of Christians, cultural references all made for a book that as I read, I felt I was right there living out each situation, along with the characters.

The book is an epic novel, based on true life event's and with each turn of the page you will be drawn in deeper and deeper. This is a definite page turner right to the very last page. You will not be disappointed.

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!

Becoming a Woman Of Influence: A Book Review

About The Book:

Jesus' twelve disciples changed the world forever. Would you like to have a similar impact?

But how do we accomplish this as imperfect people? How can we mentor others in a life-changing and even world-changing way?

With Carol Kent's help, discover the power you have in Christ to influence others like Jesus did.  Learn seven simple, life-changing principles Jesus used to influence others - like asking questions, telling stories, and offering unconditional love to others. Through practical examples, see how your struggles and triumphs can inspire others.

Whether you're an "ordinary" Christian or a trained leader, prepare to live intentionally and become a valued mentor who leaves an eternal mark.  This book also includes a nine-week Bible study for personal reflection or group reflection.

About The Author:

Carol Kent is hilariously funny, biblically sound, and heartbreakingly transparent in person and in print. Founder and president of Speak Up for Hope (a prison ministry) and Speak Up Speaker Services (a speakers' bureau), Carol is the best-selling author of many books, including When I Lay My Isaac DownA New Kind of NormalBecoming a Woman of InfluenceSpeak Up with ConfidenceSecret Longings of the Heart, andTame Your Fears. She is an expert on public speaking, writing, and evangelism. Carol travels the world, speaking to tens of thousands each year at events such as Extraordinary Women, Vision New England, Women of Faith, THRIVE, and Women of Grace. Carol and her husband, Gene, make their home in Florida.

You can check out Carol's blog here and her website, Speak Up For Hope, here.

My Review:

I have had the pleasure of reading a number of Carol Kent's books in the past, so was very excited to be able to read Becoming A Woman of Influence.

As a mom, I know that just how easy (and important) it is to influence my children, but haven't really given it much thought as to how I influence other women in my life. That is until I read this book. It has really shown me how to live my life with intentionality and purpose. It gives seven principles to incorporate in your life to influence those around you, and either become, or find, a mentor for others. A fantastic read, with a great nine week study guide that will help you work through becoming a solid Titus 2 woman! The only thing that bugged me about the book was that most of the scripture references were from The Message by Eugene Peterson. Although I really enjoy this translation of the Bible, I feel that in a study book such as this one, the references should have been from a more literal translation like the NASB or ESV. Otherwise, a very solid, encouraging read that I highly recommend be read by all women, church leaders or not.

My Review:

Lady In The Mist is book one of The Midwives Series and it only took a few pages into the book to realize that this is one series I was going to love!

This book will appeal to a number of different readers, as it includes romance and a murder mystery. You will be drawn into the world of 19th century Virginia, and it is very evident that a large amount of research was done for the purpose of writing this book. The characters are all very well developed and it was great to see the journey that Tabitha takes throughout the book. A great read for all fans of historical fiction!

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up.

Wade Ryan can't help being attracted to Abigail. But he's given up everything to protect his daughter, and he's not about to risk it all on a pretty face.

An Interview with Denise Hunter:

Q: Have you always wanted to be a writer? When did you first begin to write?

I've always been an avid reader, but I didn't start dreaming about writing a novel until I was in my early twenties. By then I was married and busy pursuing a degree. I put writing on the back burner until my grandfather became fatally ill. While I was visiting him in the hospital, I was struck by the brevity of life and felt God pressing on my heart to take the first step. I started my first novel a couple weeks later.  I had two small children by this time, so I wrote while they napped. I wrote my first four books that way. Even if you can only write a page a day, by the end of the year, you'll have a complete manuscript!

Q: Are you a small town or city girl? What inspired you to write a book about the life of a cowboy?

I'm a little of both.  We live in a country setting just outside the city. It's the best of both worlds. There's something very earthy and organic about a cowboy's life. I was drawn by the idea of living off the land. I think it takes us to a simpler time and place - even though the life of a cowboy is not necessarily simple. And Montana is such a beautiful state. I thought my readers might like to journey there with me through story.

Q: Can you tell us a little about what you have learned about the cowboy lifestyle while doing research for this book?

I learned a lot of fascinating details about the workings of a ranch: branding, breeding, cattle diseases, etc. But what I came away with is a great respect for cowboys and their families. Those who choose this way of life do it because they love it. It's not easy and it's not for the faint of heart.

Q: Abigail's title at her job is "the Truthseeker." What is the significance of this title, and what do you think a real truthseeker does?

I thought it would be interesting to write about a protagonist whose job was to seek the truth and have her find out that she was missing the real Truth the whole time. Since Jesus is the Truth, a real truthseeker follows Him.

Q: Forgiveness seems to be a recurring theme in your books. Why do you feel it is so important? Your main characters both dealt with forgiving their past mistakes. Do you think that it is just as important to forgive ourselves as it is to forgive the mistakes of others?

With Sin rampant in all of us, this is something we need to get good at! Eventually, someone's going to do something you struggle to forgive. I think this is partly because forgiveness is easily misunderstood. It's not saying that what they did is okay. It's saying that you're not going to hold it over them anymore. I do think it's just as important to forgive ourselves as it is to forgive others. Often times, it's even harder.

Q: Abigail and Wade both threw themselves into their work in order to escape their pasts. Do you believe it is easy to find an escape in work in order to hide from our problems?

No one likes to hurt, so I think the tendency is to avoid it however we can. Throwing ourselves into our work is certainly one way of doing so. But these things have a way of bubbling up to the surface eventually, no matter how hard we try to avoid them.

Q: What would you like your readers to take away after reading A Cowboy's Touch?

Abigail was essentially trying to work off her guilt. She thought if she could just keep exposing other peoples' wrongs, it would appease her own guilt. I'd like readers to see that only God can redeem us.

My Review:

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Denise Hunter's most recent novel, A Cowboy's Touch. It was very easy to read, and I was able to read it in a day (thanks in part of a long weekend!). All the character's were well developed, with my favorites being the two main ones: Abigail and Wade. The book is a Women of Faith pick for 2011 and I can definitely see why: the faith journey that each character takes is well developed without being pushy and the gospel message is given throughout the book.

I look forward to the second book in this "A Big Sky Romance", entitled, The Accidental Bride, which is set for release in January 2012 and will be featuring the character of "Shay" from this book. It will interesting to see how this character develops in the next book. Hunter has another book, Smitten, being released December 2011 and it is going to be co-written with Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck and Diann Hunt. Sounds like a fantastic combination of authors, and if you are a fan of any of these great authors, you will want to check out Smitten. I know I will be!

A Cowboy's Touch has just enough romance and adventure to keep you intrigued right until the very end of the book. You will not want to put it down! I also loved that it has a reader guide included, perfect for individual reflection and book club discussions.

A great read that I highly recommend!

My Nutrisystem Journey Week 12 Weigh In

I am a few days late posting due to the busy Easter weekend, so thought I would post tonight!

Phew, what a week!

I finally got back on track with exercising and was able to get a workout in EVERY DAY!!! So proud of myself on that and I can't believe how much better I feel when I have worked out regularly! I know there are days when I won't get a full workout in, however, even walking one mile using the Leslie Sansone Walk At Home in my day (about 20 minutes) makes a huge difference! That said, I am off to workout right after I finish this post!

I am now entering my final month on the Nutrisystem Canada Blogger Program. As much as I have really loved being a part of this program, I am really excited about what the future holds as I enter maintence at the end of May. I am also hoping that I can lost at least 10 more pounds before I finish with Nutrisystem full time. If I lose ten more pounds I will almost be at my wedding weight for almost 14 years ago! That is huge for me.

I will talking with the Nutrisystem team this week and getting some ideas and advice on how to maintain my weightloss after I am doing this final month. I will be sharing those ideas with you all next weekend, so stay tuned.

As successful as this last week was for me regarding exercise, eating was a little more rough. I had a difficult time sticking to the Nutrisystem food this weekend with Easter and all the yummy food and treats, so fell off the wagon a little:) A girl has to indulge a little, no? Of course, I did not go overboard, but not sure all my choices were totally the wisest ones I could have made. But the ham and sweet potatoe casserole was so hard to say no to:)

Now, the moment of truth:

Starting Weight (January 28, 2011): 174.5lbs (too much!)
Last Week Weight (April 16, 2011): 157.6lbs (woohoo!)
Current Weight (April 16, 2011): 158.7 (whoops!)
Total weekly loss/gain: GAINED 1.1lb
Total Weight loss to date: 15.8lbs!!!!

Stay tuned next week for my thoughts on week 13!

For more information about the Nutrisystem Canada program, check it out here!

For more information about the Nutrisystem US program, check it outhere!

Have a great week!

****In return for participating in the Nutrisystem Canada's Blogger Program, I am being provided with free food. In return, I will be blogging about my experience in an honest manner. I have not been compensated in any other manner****

There's Lead In Your Lipstick Blog Tour and Contest!

For the last several years, I have been actively trying to be more conscious about what is in my health and beauty products. Both products that I use personally and what I use on my children. I do this because we all tend to have pretty sensitive skin, but also because of the chemicals that are found in many of these products, and the ill effects they can have on humans.

There is a great book out called There's Lead In Your Lipstick by Gillian Deacon and it is a fascinating look into the health and beauty industry and gives some great alternatives to chemical free living.

About The Book:

By the time she heads out the front door, the modern woman has spritzed, sudsed, and slathered herself in more than 127 different chemicals, many of them more toxic than beautifying.

So how can you look and feel great while safeguarding your health? Get smart and go green from head to toe with the help of eco-expert Gillian Deacon. In The Green Body Guide, you'll learn how to read the ingredients to identify and understand the preservatives that are bad for your body and damaging to the earth, including formaldehyde in deodorant, nail polish, soap, shampoo, and shaving cream; coal tar in hair dyes; lead in lipstick; and many more. This is an indispensable handbook of personal-care choices that are sustainable, both for your health and for the earth

About Gillian Deacon:

Award-winning broadcaster and writer Gillian Deacon brings her informed and friendly style to the subject that has long been her passion. A busy working mom and host of CBC-TV's The Gill Deacon Show, she understands the challenges of trying to "do it all" with a smaller environmental footprint.

A Message From Gillian Deacon:

Earth day shouldn't just be an annual tip of the hat to greener living. This year, make it the day you recalibrate your everyday patterns to be more earth-friendly all year long.

You don't have to be a treehugger to care about avoiding toxins in your everyday bodycare. Synthetic chemicals in personal care products contaminating groundwater and wildlife is alarming enough—but they’re also contaminating us. Those hard-to-read ingredients you squint at on the back of a product label? They’re building up inside your body and in your children’s bodies—on Earth Day and everyday.

Make today the day you start paying attention to that fine print. Turn a product over and read the ingredients label before you are seduced by the “green” imaging on the package. The good news is, there are lots of safer products on the market.

Good luck and I hope you’ll check out There’s Lead in Your Lipstick for more ideas on how to clean up your act!
