The Nature Principle: A Book Review

About The Book:

The immediacy of Richard Louv s message in Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder galvanized an international movement to reconnect children with nature.

Now, in The Nature Principle, Louv reaches even further with a powerful call to action for the rest of us. Our society, says Louv, has developed such an outsized faith in technology that we have yet to fully realize or even adequately study how human capacities are enhanced through the power of nature. Supported by groundbreaking research, anecdotal evidence, and compelling personal stories,

Louv shows us how tapping into the restorative powers of the natural world can boost mental acuity and creativity; promote health and wellness; build smarter and more sustainable businesses, communities, and economies; and ultimately strengthen human bonds.

As he says in his introduction, The Nature Principle is about the power of living in nature not with it, but in it. We are entering the most creative period in history. The twenty-first century will be the century of human restoration in the natural world. Richard Louv makes a convincing case that through a nature-balanced existence driven by sound economic, social, and environmental solutions the human race can and will thrive.

This timely, inspiring, and important work will give readers renewed hope while challenging them to rethink the way we live.

About The Author:

Richard Louv is a journalist and the author of seven books about the connections between family, nature, and community. His most recent book, Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature-Deficit Disorder, has been translated into nine languages and published in thirteen countries. Louv is the chairman and cofounder of the Children and Nature Network (www.childrenandnature.org) and was awarded the Audubon Medal, presented by the National Audubon Society, in 2008. Find him online at www.richardlouv.com

My Review:

Just as Last Child in the Woods left us with the concept that we need to get our children back to nature in order to combat Nature-Deficiet Disorder (a term he coined), now Louv challenges adults to do the same with The Nature Principle.

Louv writes in such a manner that you are drawn in from the very first pages, and although this is a book that you need to take time reading, in order to absorb all the information, it is a very easy read. You will be challenged to "get back to nature" and be reminded that just as getting into nature is important for kids, it is for us too. Not only is it important for us physically, emotionally, mentally, spiritually but also on a community basis. When the whole community works together to emphasize the importance of embracing nature and time spent in it, great things will happen! We all just have to let go of the technology that seems to have such a grasp on us, and give into the beauty of nature and let it refresh not only our own self, but our entire social network!

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!

Amish Values For Your Family: A Book Review

About The Book:

When it comes to strong families that know how to truly enjoy life together, there is much we can learn from the Amish. Just how do they establish such strong family bonds, such deeply held values, and such wonderful family traditions? In Amish Values for Your Family, bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher shares the secrets of Amish family life. In this inspiring and practical book, you will meet real Amish families that are a lot like yours. Through their stories you'll discover how to
  • slow down
  • safeguard family time
  • raise children who stand strong in their faith
  • prioritize what's truly important
Amish values like community, forgiveness, simple living, obedience, and more can be your family legacy--without selling your car or changing your wardrobe.

About The Author:

Suzanne Woods Fisher is the bestselling author of The Choice, The Waiting, The Search, and A Lancaster County Christmas, as well as nonfiction books about the Amish, including Amish Peace. Her interest in the Anabaptist cultures can be directly traced to her grandfather, W. D. Benedict, who was raised in the Old Order German Baptist Brethren Church in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Benedict eventually became publisher of Christianity Today magazine. Suzanne is the host of an internet radio show called Amish Wisdom, and her work has appeared in many magazines. She lives in California.

My Review:

Suzanne Woods Fisher is one of my favorite Amish Fiction authors and I was honored to review Amish Values for Your Family recently. With the familiar simplicity seen in her other writings, you will learn some amazing lessons that can be incorporated your own everyday life. I cannot tell you how many points I have underlined in this book, that I hope to use with my family in the near future. From planning family vacations that are full of memories and not stress, to making Christmas simple and more about Christ, then what we do make it. My favorite section in the book occurs in each chapter and is called, "In their own words", and is little tidbits from real Amish families. Here are a few quotes that especially hit home with me:

"My goal should never be to raise kids who make me look good. My goal should be to raise kids who love God and spend their lives honoring Him" (p. 164)

"We were unsure of what the future held, but we knew who held our future" (p. 175, speaking about losing a loved one)

"People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care" (p. 137)

If you are looking for an inspiring read that will take you to a simpler place and ideas to bring simplicity to your busy life, I highly recommend you read this book!

I give Amish Values for Your Family a huge thumbs up.

Out Of Control: A Book Review

About The Book:

Julia Gilliland has always been interested in the natural world around her. She particularly enjoys studying the fossils and formations in the magnificent cave near her father's house. The cave seems plenty safe--until the day a mysterious intruder steals the rope she uses to climb out.

Rafe Kincaid is a man used to being in control--of himself, his brothers, and his family's ranch. The last thing he expects is to find a woman trapped in the cavern on his land--or to be forced to kiss her!

Rafe is more intrigued by Julia than any woman he's ever known. But when their developing relationship threatens a reconciliation with his brothers, will Rafe have to choose between his family and this new love that could heal his troubled heart and secure his happiness?

Out of Control

About The Author:

Mary Connealy writes fun and lively "romantic comedy with cowboys" for the inspirational market. She is the author of the successful Lassoed in Texas, Montana Marriages, and Sophie's Daughters series, and her novel Calico Canyon was nominated for a Christy Award. She lives on a ranch in eastern Nebraska with her husband, Ivan, and has four grown daughters.

My Review:

I absolutely LOVED Out Of Control! If you are a fan of cowboy/historical fiction, you will definitely enjoy this one! With a great variety of characters including Julia, Audra, and Rafe, you will experience romance, mystery, and hearing about issues including mental illness, gambling, and the ultimate importance of letting go and letting God have control over all our lives! This is the first book in the Kincaid Brides Series, and I cannot wait to read book 2, In Too Deep. The writing of this book was very well done, and the development of the characters shows the real strong will that women of that time period needed to have in order to survive. The faith aspect of the book was not "in your face" but loved the message that God is in control, even when all around us we feel control slipping away. We just need to lean on Him, just as Rafe, Julia and the rest of the characters in Out Of Control did.

A great read that I highly recommend!

Super Hero Fun with Captain America and Hasbro: Review and GIVEAWAY!

In my house superhero play has been all the rage! Even though I am a mom of girls, I care for a 3 year old little boy in my family child care program, so I knew the introduction of superhero play was inevitable. Not that it is a bad thing, I just know that most of the time it leads to more violent play. However, the children love being the "good heroes", saving the good guys from the bad. I love watching their imaginations soar as they play, and love it when I find fun props to aid their superhero play.

Hasbro is one company that has a fantastic line of role play products, including a fantastic assortment designed around this summer's hit movie, Captain America. I was generously sent three Captain America products to review from Hasbro Canada.

Captain America Disc Launching Shield:

Built especially for the Allies’ own super soldier, this indestructible shield became a symbol of strength for people around the world. In the hands of Captain America, it is a powerful weapon. Now you’ve got the chance to wield the shield of the most skilled fighter in the world!
Make crime-fighting action “come alive” with this Disc Launching Shield. When enemies appear and it’s up to you to defeat them, wield your shield to protect yourself from their advances. Just when they think they’ve got you cornered, use your shield to launch your five discs up to 20 feet to take out their forces! With your power and this shield, there’s just no stopping you!
Shield comes with 5 discs.  Ages 5+

Captain America Hero Action Figure:
The ultimate hero is here to save the day! When evil threatens the world, Captain America is there with his indestructible shield and peerless fighting skills. Not even the armed might of an entire nation bent on world conquest can stand against him!
Your highly detailed Captain America figure is ready to take on whatever evil forces come his way! Help your fierce fighter wield his shield against his enemies, defend himself from attacks and strike back with speed and power. Even when you’re surrounded, you and your Captain America figure can battle your way to victory!
Ages 4+

Captain America Hero Mask:
Make super hero action “come alive” with this awesome Captain America Hero Mask. When villains rear their ugly heads and you’ve got to save the day, put on your mask to feel just like your favorite hero! With details that make this mask seem just like the real thing, you’ll want to wear it all the time — or until your evil enemies are defeated! Ages 5+

My Review:

All three of these Captain America toys have been a HUGE hit in my home. They have allowed for hours of role play time and to hear the children act out superhero's and rescuing people is just fantastic. When the kids start to get a little rougher in their play, which is bound to happen, I just remind them gently, that real superhero's help, not hurt people, and that redirects the play, without stopping it completely!

All three pieces are made of strong plastic and with proper use will last a long time. It does not seem to matter that these are Captain America products, I have seen all the popular superheros come out when the kids where the helmet and use the shield, along with the various capes I owned already! Just great!

If you have a little "superhero" in your midst, I highly recommend all the Hasbro role play products, especially the newest line of Captain America products!

BUY IT: You can purchase the above Captain America products, from Hasbro, at your favorite toy retailer such as Zellers, Walmart and Toys R Us.

WIN IT: One (1) Reader will win a Captain America Prize Pack (includes the three products above)

Last Child in the Woods: A Book Review

About The Book:

In his landmark work Last Child in the Woods, Richard Louv brought together cutting-edge studies that pointed to direct exposure to nature as essential for a child's healthy physical and emotional development. Now this new addition updates the growing body of evidence linking the lack of nature in children's lives and the rise in obesity, attention disorders, and depression. Louv's message has galvanized an international back-to-nature campaign. His book will change the way you think about our future and the future of our children.

Richard Louv was the first to identify a phenomenon we all knew existed but couldn't quite articulate: nature-deficit disorder. His book Last Child in the Woods created a national conversation about the disconnection between children and nature, and his message has galvanized an international movement. Now, three years after its initial publication, we have reached a tipping point, with Leave No Child Inside initiatives adopted in at least 30 regions within 21 states, and in Canada, Holland, Australia, and Great Britain. This new edition reflects the enormous changes that have taken place since the bookand this grassroots movement were launched. It includes: 101 Things you can do to create change in your community, school, and family. Discussion points to inspire people of all ages to talk about the importance of nature in their lives. A new afterword by the author about the growing Leave No Child Inside movement. New and updated research confirming that direct exposure to nature is essential for the physical and emotional health of children and adults. This is a book that will change the way you think about your future and the future of your children.

About The Author:

Richard Louv is the author of seven books. He is the chairman of the Children Nature Network, has served as adviser to the Ford Foundation's Leadership for a Changing World award program and the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child. He has appeared on Good Morning America, NBC Nightly News, NPR's Morning Edition, and many other programs. For more information about the impact of the book and the work being done, visit: www.cnaturenet.org

My Review:

As an early childhood educator I had heard about Richard Louv and his 2005 release, Last Child in the Woods, when it was first released. Louv recently updated the book, and I had the chance to review it. I am so glad that I had the opportunity to do so!

I cannot stress enough the importance for EVERY parent and educator of young children to read this book! It will change the way you look at play, education and learning forever. As good as the increase in technology and modernism has been for man, there have been so many downfalls as well. Particularly in the way our learn. Not only do you have children not connecting with their natural world, like my generation did (and those prior), but we are seeing an epidemic of sorts in childhood diabetes, obesity, behavior issues, and more. All that can in many senses be related to our disconnect to nature. Do not get me wrong, I am not saying these physical issues are caused by children not going outside, but there is a definite correlation, and Louv explains his thoughts on this in his book.

Although Louv uses a lot of statistics, history, etc,but not a lot of empirical data, the book is very easy to understand, flows nicely and will definitely your thinking about children and nature play and exploration.  I also LOVED the revised version including 100 Nature Activiites for Families to enjoy.

I have already done a few of the activities from the list with my girls, and my family child care program:

a) Be a cloudspotter: we all went in the yard and laid down in the grass to observe clouds and find pictures in them...my children are preschool age, but we looked up the names and types on clouds in our child encyclopedia and online later to learn more! It was great to hear all that the children found in the clouds! (p. 361)

b) Go Digital: I bought three second hand digital cameras for the kids to use outside and take picture of their surroundings. It has been so much fun going through the pictures and seeing what they do on a daily basis! (p. 363)

Here are a few quotes from the book that especially resonated with me:

"If getting our kids out into nature is a search for perfection, or is one more chore, then the belief in perfection and the chore defeats the joy. It's a good thing to learn more about nature in order to share this knowledge with children; it's even better if the adult and child learn about nature together. And it's a lot more fun."

“I like to play indoors better ‘cause that’s where all the electrical outlets are.”

"Unlike television, nature does not steal time; it amplifies it"

"An environment-based education movement--at all levels of education--will help students realize that school isn't supposed to be a polite form of incarceration, but a portal to the wider world."

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up.

Renee is featured writer for Encouragement for Todayonline devotions that currently touch over 450,000 lives each day across the world. She lives in North Carolina with her husband and three children.

My Review:

As a wife, mom and woman, I struggle regularly with confidence issues. I have for many years, even though I have been a Christian for a long time. I cannot tell you a specific incident that preceded my confidence problems, they have just always been there. It has taken a lot of prayer, and encouragement from others, as well as God's grace to get me where I am today. A Confident Heart is just the book that I needed to read recently. It has reinforced all that I have been learning about true confidence that comes from fully and completely surrendering all my life to Jesus Christ. It is so easy to worry and stress out and doubt but I know that He will give me all the strength I need to live my life and do His work here on Earth. I especially loved the chart of scripture promises to help with self doubt! Through His Word, and the ministry of Renee Swope, I have been encouraged and challenged more than I have in a very long time! You will be inspired and challenged throughout reading this book!

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!

About The Author:

Laura Frantz credits her grandmother as being the catalyst for her fascination with Kentucky history. Frantz's family followed Daniel Boone into Kentucky in the late eighteenth century and settled in Madison County, where her family still resides. Frantz is the author of The Frontiersman's Daughter andCourting Morrow Little and currently lives in the misty woods of Washington with her husband and two sons.

My Review:

Once again I have had a chance to read and review a fantastic novel from author, Laura Frantz, and I was not disappointed. I love historical fiction, but I think I overdid it reading them over the years and it has been because of authors like Frantz, that have brought me back to this genre! She writing style draws you in from the very first pages as you follow Roxanna, and all the other wonderful characters in The Colonel's Lady. There is enough suspense, romance and positive story lines to keep your interest throughout the book, and I loved that. This book is based loosely on real-life events of the life of Colonel George Rogers Clark, and it is very event that much research went into the writing of this novel. I cannot wait to see what Frantz writes next and I will be a fan for a long time I am sure!

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!

In This Place: Blog Tour and Giveaway!

About This Book:

"Giving up my plans for my life was the most utterly beautiful but most difficult thing I have ever done. As the drone of the Cessna 180 brought me out of my flashback, I smiled as I found myself right where I have, for so long, feared to go. The jungles of Africa. But somehow, though I still felt some trepidation about this new experience, it seemed right. Very right." ~ Kim L. Abernethy
After a 3 year struggle with surrendering to God’s plans, Kim finally submits to God’s calling on her life - missions, raw and heart-warming, to the country of Liberia, West Africa. These stories captured in real time from the coffers of her early journals will inspire you. Travel with Kim and her small family to an unfamiliar culture as she experiences events that could easily have shattered her resolve to continue following Christ’s dynamic plans for her life.
In 1985 Kim Abernethy, along with her husband, Jeff, followed a call from God to minister in the West African country of Liberia. She writes of the fall of one of her daughters from a two-story building, shares candid emotions when her husband had a close call with Lassa Fever, and delightfully chronicles her husband's adventures of being a bush pilot in the jungle of Liberia.
Whether you are intrigued by the stories of foreign missionaries and how they adapt to a new culture or are heading towards the mission field yourself, you will find this book enlightening and inspiring.
Inside you will find disbelief, tragedy, fear, anxiety, discontentment, and confusion, but there is also humor, delight, amazement, wonder, surrender, and a deep-seated joy as you watch how God chipped away at the walls of pride, disbelief, and stubbornness that had held Kim captive.
About The Author:
Kim grew up in the small community of Delco, North Carolina. Delco is located twenty miles west of the beautiful port city of Wilmington.
The oldest of two children, her brother, Eddie, died in 2001 after a twenty-seven year battle with terminal kidney disease. Seeing what God did in and through her brother’s life, watching miracle after miracle, served as a catalyst to strengthen her faith in a personal & sovereign God.
She attended Peace College in Raleigh, NC, receiving a degree in English and Journalism. Feeling God leading her into a full-time missionary career, she studied at Piedmont Baptist College. There she met her husband, Jeff Abernethy, and they were married in 1981 and graduated in 1982.
By December 1985, Kim, her husband Jeff, and their oldest daughter, Michelle (then 2) headed to Liberia, West Africa. It is from journals kept during the first five years in Liberia that Kim penned her first book, In This Place. From those journals comes the captivating story of her life as a young missionary wife and mother in a culture she hardly understood.
In 2002, after seventeen years living in and out of West Africa and the West Indies, the Abernethys settled back in Charlotte. For the past eight years, they have lead a dynamic campus ministry called Campus Bible Fellowship International at the University of NC - Charlotte.
Interview With The Author:

We understand that you kept rather detailed journals as a young missionary woman in Liberia, West Africa. What prompted you to do that?

My husband and I, along with our 2 1/2 year old daughter, Michelle, were absorbed deeply into the Liberian jungle (180 miles from the capital city Monrovia) at a time when communicating with the “outside” world was still an anomaly. In the mid 1980’s, our key communication source to our family in America was through ham radio operators and by that means, we usually talked to our families only once a month.

There was never enough time to tell them all the cultural things we were learning or share the cute things about their granddaughter, so I felt the need to supplement with journals. I would handwrite the journals as events happened, but then would use my Selectric II typewriter (during electricity time - you’ll understand that more if you read the book) to type out the journals and mail them off. My mother wisely put the journals into a large manila envelope and saved them. She and my father knew my hankering for writing and prayed that I would one day use those journals to write a book.

How (exactly) did you go about writing the book? Did you take your journal entries and just add more details?

I wrote the first couple of chapters almost six years ago. Between a busy college ministry and an active family, it was difficult for me to know how to carve out the time I needed to make the writing effective. Of course, I always tried to give myself a self-imposed deadline, but being new at the writing and knowing I was going to self-publish did not help my need for discipline so lacking in the early formation of this book. Two years ago, after constantly reaming myself out for not getting serious and lamenting to my husband and family that I needed to get this book done, they rallied around and helped me carve out more substantial amounts of time for serious writing.

Not having any template on how to write from detailed journals, I just decided to dig into the coffers of the journals, make notes about the stories I wanted to use, and then started writing. There were times I found that I could not improve on how I had said something in my journal so I gave myself permission to quote directly from the journal.

What helped you make the decision of which stories to include and which stories to leave out?

That was not an easy task. Taking the advice of several friends and other writers, I stopped the constant editing and analyzing of what I had already written and just wrote the story. It soon started to weave itself into somewhat of a continuum.

After I had completely written the story, I went back and read the entire book, critically, as through the eyes of those who might read it but not really know me very well. I prayed much that God would give me the grace to know when to “let go” of a story, especially when it seemed that it was completely self-serving. Grant it, I struggled with God over at least two particular stories that I really wanted to keep in there, but no matter how hard I tried, they did not fit the spirit of what the book had become.

Honestly, I do not believe that I could have written this book in as God-honoring of a way ten years ago. While I am no where near what I need to be in Christ, I do know that  He has taken more of the ME out of the story and inserted much more of the HIM in it.

Can you give us a brief synopsis of this story?

In 1985 I, along with my husband, Jeff, followed a call from God to minister in the small West African country of Liberia. From learning how to effectively communicate with the Liberian workers in my jungle home to witnessing the painful death of a young woman in childbirth, I write candidly. I tell stories of every day happenings in the life of jungle living, but also plod through the painful: when one of my daughter’s fell from an 18-foot balcony and when my husband was exposed to Lassa fever. One of my favorite things to write about were the chronicles of my husband's adventures of being a bush pilot in the jungle of Liberia.

Inside this book you will find disbelief, tragedy, fear, anxiety, discontentment, and confusion, but there is also humor, delight, amazement, wonder, surrender, and a deep-seated joy as you watch how God - little by little - chipped away at the walls of pride, unbelief, stubbornness, and independence that had always held me captive to myself. You may find yourself in these stories.

What was your key inspirational force in writing and publishing your first book?

My three daughters were the primary inspirations. Our oldest, Michelle, was 2 1/2 when we first went to Liberia. Stefanie, our second, was born in the middle of the jungle after we had only been in Liberia for ten months. Third daughter Lauren was born during the tumultuous time after our first evacuation from our ministry & home in Liberia. I wanted them to have a written account of their parents’ missionary journey in West Africa and beyond. It is one thing to be a Missionary Kid and live the life in your “home away from home”, but as they are all now young women in their twenties, I wanted them to see God in a bigger way. To always have a reason to keep trusting Him - no matter what.

Another motivation for writing this book were young missionary couples (particularly the women) who may wonder what they can expect as they enter their field of service. Though the country and circumstances may be different, I want the book to be a cultural, spiritual, and practical guide to those who will come behind us.

The third reason was for those that have always been interested in the intrinsic details of foreign missionary lives. I offer this candid missionary memoir as a means to open the door to seeing us as human, exposing struggles and sharing victories.

My Review:

An absolutely amazing journey of one woman's answer to God's call on her life to be a missionary! You will laugh, cry and turn each page with great anticipation to see how God works in Kim's life. It is an honest and open look at the life of a missionary, with no sugar coating at all. I truly appreciated Kim's transparency throughout reading In This Place, and look forward to reading her upcoming release, In Every Place, due to be published this Fall. God is definitely seen throughout this book and Kim's life and you will be inspired and challenged to listen to His calling on your own life, and move out of your comfort zone to do what He wants for you! That said, not all of us are called to be missionaries overseas, but we are all called to make disciples, wherever we are! We just need to be willing and available!

I highly recommend this book and give it huge thumbs up!
