The Queen: A Book Review

About The Book:

While investigating a mysterious double homicide in an isolated northern Wisconsin town, FBI Special Agent Patrick Bowers uncovers a high-tech conspiracy that ties together long-buried Cold War secrets with present-day tensions in the Middle East.

In his most explosive thriller yet, bestselling author Steven James delivers a pulse-pounding, multilayered storytelling tour de force that will keep you guessing.

You can read an excerpt of The Queen here, in PDF format

About The Author:

Critically acclaimed author Steven James has written more than twenty books, includingThe Pawn, The Rook, The Knight, and The Bishop, all part of the bestselling thriller series The Bowers Files. The Pawn is the basis of a TV series currently in development. One of the nation's most innovative storytellers, Steven developed his skill as a performer at East Tennessee State University (MA in storytelling). He lives in Tennessee with his wife and three daughters.

My Review:

DISCLAIMER: The Queen contains violence and very graphic crime scene descriptions. If you are bothered by this, then this book is not for you.

That said, I am a huge fan of crime novels and television series', so The Queen was right up my alley. This book, though long at over 500 pages, is fast paced and will have you reading until late in the night to find out what happens next. There are several story lines going on throughout the book, and this could frustrate or confuse some readers, particularly if you have not read the other four books in the series. I have only read this one and the last one, The Bishop, and I will admit, I am a little confused so will be going back and reading the first three books. That said, I really enjoyed this book. The characters are all pretty well-developed and I really enjoyed how James portrayed all of them, even the bad guys. The writing style of Steven James reminds of James Patterson, without the cuss words and overtly graphic scenes. As I mentioned in the disclaimer there are graphic crime scene descriptions throughout The Queen, but it's done in a way that adds to the story, not distracts you from it. Overall, a great book that also includes themes like moving on from past pain, redemption and romance.

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up.

My Review:

This is an absolute must read for any Tween or Teen girl in your life. I truly believe that your daughters or other girls in your life will be incredibly blessed as they read through Hot Chocolate With God, and do the various activities that are included in the book. It covers all the various topics that girls 11-20 would be interested in hearing about, from clothing to boys to self esteem and more. It is such up in such a way that it could be used as a devotional for individual study but also could be done as a way for a mom and daughter to connect together once a week. A fantastic gift idea for the upcoming Christmas season.

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!

He is also featured on 6 video series on marriage, parenting, blended families, and single parenting.

Dr. Leman and his wife, Sande, live in Tucson, Arizona. They have 5 children and 2 grandchildren.

My Review:

I love Kevin Leman and have read a number of his books in the last couple years, particularly his best-selling book, Have A New Kid By Friday, so pleasantly surprised when I heard the version for parenting teens was being released.

Once again, Leman takes parents through the wonderful world of parenting teens and gives fantastic ideas for dealing with the typical discipline problems that are bound to arise with this wonderful stage of parenting.

Leman uses humor to help parents with all kinds of issues, as seen in the A to Z section of the book. This was by far my favorite part of the book, as it covers something for everyone. It is current in mentioning more complex, current issues too like eating disorders, drugs and alcohol, self esteem, messy rooms, texting and more.

 In a well organized, well written and easy to read book, you will be encouraged as you parent children in the Tween and Teen stages of life. For younger children, definitely check out Have A New Kid By Friday, and check out some of his video clips on YouTube as well.

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!

A Journey Continued

During this last year, I have had the privilege to read Ann Voskamp's remarkable book, One Thousand Gifts. It has changed my life. Correction, God has changed my life through Ann and her book. For about two years I have been extremely blessed to read her blog, A Holy Experience, and interact with her on Facebook, so was so excited when her book was released. If you haven't read it, you NEED to. But before you do, pray that you will be open to what God wants to teach you through Ann and her writing. The biggest thing about this book is the challenge she puts out to the reader to look for joy, even in the toughest of times, the messy times, the hard times. It is not an easy thing to do in midst of difficulties to see joy but doing so has changed me and challenged me, and for that I am grateful.

Today, I am joining many other women as we continue our 1000 gifts lists, for Multitudes on Mondays, and I urge you to join us!

To Have and To Hold: A Book Review

About The Book:

Take a trip back in time to beautiful Bridal Veil Island

When Audrey Cunningham moved with her father to his ancestral home on Bridal Veil Island, Georgia, she hoped the beauty and remoteness of the place would keep him sober and close to God. But now wealthy investors are buying up land to build a grand resort on the secluded island--and they want the Cunninghams' property.

Contractor Marshall Graham can't imagine why Boyd Cunningham would ask him to look after Audrey. Marshall has no desire to be saddled with caring for the fiery young woman who seems to think the worst of him. But when someone appears to be sabotaging the construction work at the resort and Audrey's life is endangered, Marshall realizes she holds more of his heart than he thought and he'll do anything to keep her safe.
Amid a time of growth and change for Bridal Veil, can Marshall and Audrey find a foundation on which to build a love to last forever?

Another fantastic read from one of my favorite historical fiction writers! With amazing descriptions, themes, romance, and really fun, lovable characters, I was drawn into the world of Audrey Cunningham from page one. The pace of the book is quick and I read the book in only a few days (over a weekend).  If you are a fan of historical fiction, you will really enjoy To Have and To Hold.

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up.

As you work through the 8 week session, you will journey through a number of issues, so this study will appeal to women of all ages and stages. Each session follows the same outline, and will enable much discussion that will encourage you to get "unstuck". I know for myself how each it is to get stuck and what I have viewed of this study is that it is perfect for encouraging women. My Review:

Elizabeth George has been one of my favorite female authors for quite some time, and was first introduced to her work when I first got married.  In fact, it was due in part to reading her books, that I came up with the blog name I did. Now, as a mom of two girls, I was very excited to hear of her new release, Raising a Daughter After God's Own Heart.

I have always enjoyed how Elizabeth George writes in such an easy to read and understand manner. Her books are designed for moms and women at any stage and age of life. I love that she always includes many personal experiences, and does so in this newest book once again. This book gave me so many wonderful ideas to implement in my own life as a mom of young girls currently, and to reference later as my girls grow.

Being a mom is one of the greatest gifts God has blessed me with and even though I am at a stage where some days are tougher than others, I know that my girls are learning valuable lessons they will take with them their whole life! You will be presented with many scripture references and encouragement as you read each page of this book. I know I was. It includes a wonderful section in each chapter, Mom's Think Pad, where one can journal and get fantastic ideas.

Raising a Daughter After God's Own Heart is the perfect gift idea for any mom in your life, and would be a fantastic baby shower idea.

My Review:

This is the first of Mary DeMuth's books I have read and I have found a new favorite author to add to my list! Her writing style is fantastic, drawing you into the story from the very first pages of The Muir House. The characters are intriguing and real, as are the situations that they find themselves in. With romance, suspense, and mystery all included in one book, there is a little something for everyone. I love it when authors are not afraid to fictionalize difficult issues, and do so in a way that is completely real, that the reader can relate to.  DeMuth has done that here. The Muir House is definitely one of my favorite novels this year.  I cannot wait to read more from her soon!

 It would be a fantastic read for book clubs, and is a book that I highly recommend and give a huge thumbs up too!

Expecting To See Jesus: A Book Review and Giveaway

About The Book:

In this expanded edition of I Saw the Lord, revival speaker and president and CEO of AnGeL Ministries Anne Graham Lotz calls Christians to wake up to the fact Jesus may come in their lifetime. She shows us how we can experience an authentic, deeper, richer relationship with God through a life-changing, fire-blazing personal revival.

Expecting to See Jesus—the expanded edition of I Saw the Lord—is the result of Anne Graham Lotz’s life lived in the hope of Jesus’ return. As you journey with her through the pages of the Bible, you’ll come to realize why she lives her life expecting to see Jesus at any minute. And, she wants to make sure you and all other Christians are ready for that moment when your faith becomes sight.

Anne knows from personal experience that it’s in the busyness of our days, as we’re drifting in comfortable complacency, that we most need a wake-up call—a jolt that pushes us to seek out a revival of our passion for Jesus that began as a blazing fire but somehow has died down to an ineffective glow. In Expecting to See Jesus, Anne points out the biblical signs she sees in the world all around us and shows how you can experience an authentic, deeper, richer relationship with God in a life-changing, fire-blazing revival.

You can read an excerpt of Expecting To See Jesus here, in PDF format.

About The Author:

Anne Graham Lotz, daughter of Billy and Ruth Graham, is the president and CEO of AnGeL Ministries, a nonprofit organization that undergirds her efforts to draw people into a life-changing relationship with God through his Word. She is also the award-winning author of ten books, including her most recent, The Magnificent Obsession.

My Review:

Once again Anne Graham Lotz has written a scripturally sound, easy to read book that is perfect for Sunday Schools, small groups and individual study (complete with a scripture study journal in the back). Lotz reminds us to be aware of all that is happening in the world and how it relates to Jesus' return.

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up.

2Fish Kids Product Review and Discount Code

About 2Fish Kids:

We're 2fish kids. Our goal is to create products that will help parents interact with their children through daily activities. Jennifer, a certified teacher, industrial designer and mom to 2 girls and 1 boy is our resident designer. While Nathalie, the engineer, mathematician and mother of 2 boys and 1 girl, keeps the cogs turning. We are full-time moms who transform into mompreneurs when the kids are (finally!) in bed or otherwise occupied.

My Week:

MY WEEK is perfect for showing little ones how our days are organized. It is colourful, playful and personalized to your child's life. Introduce the days of the week, seasons, weather, routines and special events! Help your child anticipate and recall their daily and weekly activities!

Use MY WEEK on a refrigerator, magnetic white board or even a cookie sheet!

MY WEEK Includes:
* Magnetic Calendar
    (13 1/8" x 8 1/8")
* 58 Activity Magnets
* Dry Erase Marker
* Reusable Storage Bag

Baby Talk:

BABY TALK is a writable board book to record and illustrate baby's first 20 words! Each word is given its own page. Write the word, include a picture and note delicious details like baby's unique pronunciation and when the word was first spoken.

Can't draw a stick? No problem! Use pictures from photos, stickers, magazines, flyers and the internet (try Google images).

A cherished keepsake and a powerful tool to encourage baby's language development, it will be the first book baby will be able to read cover to cover. This, of course, is because it's a fascinating story written by none other than BABY!

Inside Baby Talk Board Book (5"x7"):
* about the baby info page
* 20 pages to record baby's first 20 words
* 2 pages for additional notes

My Review:

First, we are loving the My Week calendar at our home. My favorite part is that it is completely magnetic, making it perfect for the fridge of course. However, I use mine on a small magnetic white board, and bring it to the couch at the beginning of the week, and the girls help me set up the week together. I find this is a fantastic way to teach them not only about scheduling, but time management, and to take them time to utilize scheduling in our lives. Even at their young age, I see just how important routine is (particularly for my older child) and the My Week calendar has been a very welcome tool in our home.

Next, Baby Talk is absolutely the perfect gift idea for the new parents in your life! This is a super unique way to keep track of baby's first words. Not only can you, as the parent write down the words they say, but your child can later draw a picture of the word (or use a sticker). This book makes a super keepsake and is a fun way to introduce sight word reading to your child later down the road. I also love that the book is in board book form, as it is perfect for little hands to handle and cannot be ripped easily.

I highly recommend both My Week and Baby Talk and give 2Fish Kids a huge thumbs up!

BUY IT: You can purchase both My Week and Baby Talk online at 2Fish Kids - and when you use the code HEART15 you can receive 15% off your order!
