Kutless - Believer: A CD Review

About Kutless:

Kutless, a Christian alternative band specializing in melodic hard rock, released their self-titled debut on BEC Recordings in 2002. The group, which consists of James Mead (guitar), Nathan "Stu" Stewart (bass), Kyle Mitchell (drums), Ryan Shrout (guitar), and Jon Micah Sumrall (vocals), came together in Portland, Oregon in 1999, inspired by such Christian rock predecessors as the Supertones as well as mainstream modern rockers like Staind, Creed, and Incubus. The seeds of the band were sown when Stewart moved to Portland from his native North Dakota to attend college, where he met Sumrall, Mitchell, and Shrout. All of the members of Kutless attended the same church, Athey Creek, where they began playing music together. They soon decided to forego college to concentrate on their music career, moving into a group house where they hosted basement party gigs. The band headlined such jaunts as the Extreme Days tour and often played events to benefit battered women and children and cancer victims. The group's albums, all released by BEC Recordings, include Kutless (2002), Sea of Faces (2004), Strong Tower (2005), Hearts of the Innocent (2006), Live from Portland (also from 2006), To Know That You're Alive (2008), It Is Well (2009), and Believer (2012).

About Believer:

After a successful 2009 release that spawned the mega-hit single “What Faith Can Do,” Kutless will be releasing a new studio album titled Believer next month on February 28 (BEC Recordings). The album is produced by Chris Stevens (TobyMac, Mandisa, Carrie Underwood) and Dave Lubben (worship leader). With over two million albums sold, a RIAA Gold-selling album, AC Song of the Year in 2010, and 11 No. 1 radio singles, Kutless has transformed from that new rock band from Oregon to the one new bands look up to, the band whose music is all over the radio in multiple formats and on major tours. Believer finds Kutless using a decade of growth to deliver an expertly crafted set of songs with as much diversity in the music as there is consistency in the message. Believer is poised to become a career highlight from Kutless. The title itself is particularly important. On this album, believers will find a deeply relevant message: what does it really mean to surrender to Christ? How does this relationship change you, every day? How does it define you? It is only now, after all these years, that Kutless is able to explore these vital issues.

My Review:

Kutless is one of my favorite bands from the last few years, in the Christian Rock genre. Though much of their music is a little heavier on the rock side then I would typically listen to on a daily basis, I love their music for working out! My favorite CD of theirs to date has to be It Is Well, their worship CD. The hit single, "What Faith Can Do" is a favorite of both my husband and I, so when we found out Kutless had a new CD that was available for review, I jumped at the chance.

The lyrics are thought-provoking, honest, and will bring you to a place of worshiping our Lord through our everyday. God is truly honored through each song on this CD, with my favorite songs being Carry Me To The Cross, Even If, and I'm With You. As you listen through this CD, you will be blessed by each song, and there is a little something for everyone's listening preferences.

I highly recommend this CD and give it a huge thumbs up.
