Linspired: A Book Review and GIVEAWAY

About The Book:

Linspired reveals the remarkable journey of the ultimate underdog, Jeremy Lin, superstar of the New York Knicks and the first American-born player of Chinese/Taiwanese descent to play in the NBA
.
In spite of being cut by two NBA teams before he signed with the Knicks, Lin always trusted that God had a plan for his life and his talents: 'I'm not exactly sure how it is all going to turn out, but I know for a fact that God has called me to be here now in the NBA,' says Lin in Linspired.

After weeks of sitting at the end of the bench, a teammate’s injury finally placed Lin on the court. Since then, he has captivated sports fans throughout the world with his tremendous skill and humble response to “Linsanity.”
Weighing in on this phenomenon are tennis’s Michael Chang, the first notable Asian-American athlete, Lin’s pastor, Stephen Chen, and Pat Williams, senior vice president of the Orlando Magic. Other features include eight pages of full-color photos and in-depth interviews with Lin himself. Here is the remarkable inside story of the meteoric rise of Jeremy Lin.

About The Author:

Mike Yorkey, the author or co-author of more than 70 books, has written about sports all his life. He has collaborated with Cleveland Browns quarterback Colt McCoy, San Francisco Giants pitcher Dave Dravecky, San Diego Chargers placekicker Rolf Benirschke, and tennis star Michael Chang. In 2010, Mike authored Playing with Purpose, the story of college football's 'Holy Trinity” – Sam Bradford, Colt McCoy, and Tim Tebow. Yorkey, a graduate of the University of Oregon's school of journalism, is a former editor of Focus on the Family magazine who has also written for sports magazines such as Skiing, Tennis Week, and Racquet.

My Review:

I am a sports fan, with some of my favorite sports being hockey, football and basketball.  If you are a NBA fan, it is almost certain that you have heard of Jeremy Lin, point guard with the New York Knicks. His rise to fame within the NBA has been nothing short of remarkable and in Linspired, you are taken on the journey of his life and career.

The book is written by one of my favorite authors, Mike Yorkey, and is a quick read, at only 170 pages. The book also includes amazing full color photos of his life before and after basketball. I love the comparison between Lin and Tim Tebow, and the fact that both men are strong examples of living out faith in Jesus Christ while living in the world. The influence that Lin has been to so many is inspiring and encouraging. I am excited to see what becomes of Lin and other professional athletes as they bring Christ to their sports.

One of my favorite quotes from the book is this (Lin speaking):

"I want to be able to sit back when I'm done with my career and say that I gave everything I could and that I did it for God's glory. When I say I do it for God's glory, there are a lot of things I want to do off the court in terms of the platform of an NBA player to be able to impact the world. I'm thankful for the platform, but I don't want people to lose sight of the team, because without the team, I am nothing."

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up.

  16. Shirley . . . thanks for the awesome review of my book on Jeremy Lin. I was greatly impressed with Jeremy when I interviewed him last year . . . he really seems as humble as he comes across. His parents did a great job raising him. We'll have to see what the Lord has ahead . . . but he's a great role model for kids . . .
