Bear Hunt! - Josh and the Jamtones: A CD Review

BOSTON -- Coming off the wild,13-week ride that landed their song "Iko Iko" in the #1 spot on Sirius/XM's Kids Place Live chart, Boston-based kindie rock band Josh & the Jamtones is ready to break new ground with the release of their second kids'/family CD,Bear Hunt!.

Special guest Father Goose (featured on most of the Dan Zanesfamily albums, including the GRAMMY winning Catch That Trainand GRAMMY nominated House Party) brings his authentic, "King of the Dance Party" Caribbean presence to Bear Hunt!, contributing vocals to an up-to-date version of the traditional spiritual "Swing Low" and serving as a modern-sounding "Hype Man" on the Caribbean-influenced "I Love U."

Noted for getting families up and dancing, Josh & the Jamtonespacked their acclaimed, 2012 debut CD JUMP UP! with massive dance party action.  While Bear Hunt! continues to deliver plenty in the get-up-and-dance department, the album expands this energy by the introduction of a cornucopia of musical styles, all delivered with a razor-sharp sense of current musical taste.  Josh & the Jamtonesslip effortlessly from New Orleans-style street music, roots/reggae, second-wave ska, pure folk, folk-punk, alt-country, and classic country/bluegrass to an epic choral finale of MGM proportions.

Families should pack a knapsack full of appreciation for the off-the-cuff, improv humor delivered in four "adventure chapters" interwoven among ten musical numbers representing the eclectic taste of this vastly talented ensemble.  Josh & the Jamtones have created, with Bear Hunt!, a narrative that leaves lots of imagination space and hits just the right note for the 21st century kid brain.

Josh & the Jamtones came to life when a group of highly trained musicians (all graduates of the famed Berklee College of Music) found themselves teaching kids and families at Josh Shriber's popularJammin' With You! Program and Performance Center in Wellesley, MA.  The six-member Josh & the Jamtones band began performing in 2011 and quickly became so popular that, in record time, they received offers to play such venues as the Life is Good Festival, Fenway Park, Earthfest, The Regent Theatre, Coolidge Corner, Kindiefest, a special Sirius/XM Kids Place Live New Year's Eve broadcast, and even opening for The Wiggles

My Review:

We received Bear Hunt a couple weeks ago and it has been so much fun listening and singing along with it. There has been a number of dance parties completed using this CD as the background. My home day care children are also very much liking this CD. Almost daily we have had to listen to it and it has been great to see the children acting out the field trip that the band goes on! It is a fantastic modern take on a song that has been around for many, many years. It is very hard to pick favorite songs from this CD, as it is all very good but three songs that stand out for our family are, Green and Spakkled Frogs, Snow Day and Pirate's Life (we even dress up in costume!).

With a combination of rock and pop influences, even adults will find themselves singing and dancing along!

A great idea for gift giving and would be fantastic in any preschool, nursery school or day care musical library!

I highly recommend this CD and give it a huge thumbs up!

BUY IT: You can purchase Bear Hunt on iTunes and on Amazon
