NIV Hope in the Mourning Bible: A Review

About The Bible:

Grief is an inevitability of life. Yet, in times of grief and despair, God reveals himself and his promises for a better tomorrow. Nothing can minister as deeply to those who are mourning as the counsel and comfort of God’s word. Now, the NIV Hope in the Mourning Bible by Zondervan (March 2014) adds another layer of hope to anyone wrestling through the darkest days of life.
The new devotional Bible pairs the wisdom of God’s word with insights, testimonies and encouragement from writers who are themselves intimately acquainted with the journey of grief. The sensitive collection of devotions emphasizes the love of the Father for his children and provides heavy duty consolation to those who are hurting, no matter the reason.

The causes for grief are many, and none more heartbreaking than the death of a loved one. The Hope in the Mourning Bible shares solace and support to anyone whose world has been shattered by the loss of someone they loved, whose faith has been shaken or whose strength has been spent. The NIV Bible features:

- the full text of the Bible, New International Version
- devotions written by and for those who have suffered loss
- "Heart Whispers", passionate prayers for use by those who grieve
- "Mourning Moments" stirring reflection questions to promote healing
- "Drink Deeply", soothing song lyrics for meditation and journaling
- a beautifully serene hardcover design
- a biography of each devotional author
- a prayer appendix featuring 52 prayers based on the Psalms
- a resource page for those seeking additional help

Though grief will surely come in the course of one's lifetime, those who know God are challenged in His word "not to grieve as others, as those who have no hope" and to encourage each other with the truth that someday "we will be with the Lord forever." The NIV Hope in the Mourning Bible gently guides the reader through the grieving process and assures the believer that joy will return and spring will, without a doubt, come again.

"I will turn their mourning in to gladness; I will give them comfort and joy instead of sorrow" Jeremiah 31:13b

My Review:

This is absolutely one of the most beautiful Bibles I have had the opportunity to read, as well as review. Although I did not read through the Bible as a whole, for sake of review times, I did spend considerable time reading the devotionals, and other additions to this Bible. It is the perfect gift to give to those who have lost a loved one or are on the journey through a terminal illness. I currently am on the latter journey, as I prepare to lose both my Oma and Mother-In-Law, who are both on the journey through cancer. Both these amazing women are believers in Christ and I know one day in Heaven we will be reunited but it does not mean losing them is any easier. There will be hard days ahead, particularly as I support my husband losing his mother. This Bible has already been a wonderful source of strength and peace and I know it will continue to be that in the days and months ahead.

If you know anyone who is dealing with grief and loss, this is definitely a Bible that will be encouraging and uplifting despite the terrible journey that grief takes a person on. It's God that carries us when we cannot walk or don't think we will make it through, and the devotionals in this Bible are so calm and serene I know they will impact all those that read it.

I highly recommend the NIV Hope in the Mourning Bible and give it a huge thumbs up!
