Precious Child - Love Songs and Lullabies: A CD Review

NEW YORK, NY – The long awaited release of Precious Child -- Love Songs & Lullabies, an album by two towering musical masters -- multiple GRAMMY® nominated guitarist/composer Joe Beck and internationally acclaimed vocalist/composer/pianist Darryl Tookes -- is set for August 19.

Take one jazz legend -- the late Joe Beck -- who collaborated with practically all the great jazz musicians of the '60s, '70s, and '80s, including Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Duke Ellington, and Peggy Lee. His work as a producer/arranger/composer included clients like Frank Sinatra, Gloria Gaynor, Larry Coryell, and Esther Phillips.

Add to the mix Darryl Tookes, a signature artist with an "angelic" voice (NY Newsday), who has recorded and performed on landmark projects with Sting, Paul Simon, Elton John, Michael Jackson, Quincy Jones, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Ramsey Lewis, Natalie Cole, Carly Simon,. Burt Bacharach, Phil Ramone, Roberta Flack, Luther Vandross, Leonard Bernstein, Jessye Norman, and many more.

Season all that talent with two supreme artists' desire to express deep love for their children, and the result goes far beyond commercial interests into the realm of the sublime.  This is Precious Child -- Love Songs & Lullabies.

A document of true friendship and love, Precious Child -- Love Songs & Lullabies began its evolution in Fairfield County, Connecticut in 1995, a year that found musical soul mates and neighbors Joe Beck and Darryl Tookes both fathers to newborn babies.  The two shared an unabashed romanticism that fueled a passion for creativity.  They were fellow travelers in the musical world, literally as well as figuratively, and oftentimes shared a car ride into New York City for studio sessions.  Beck and Tookes did most of the composition, arranging, and recording for Precious Child -- Love Songs & Lullabies in the mid-1990s, but life intervened, and the project was put on hold. After Beck's death, Darryl Tookes was determined to finish the album.
At first glance, Precious Child -- Love Songs & Lullabies is a mixture of traditional childhood songs and newly composed works by Joe Beck and Darryl Tookes, but on a deeper level these songs convey messages of belonging, love, and trust.  What immediately strikes the listener is the honesty of the music, which never tries to be something that it isn't and never panders to the sensational.  Also notable is the album's sonic beauty (mastered by multi-GRAMMY® award winner Andreas Meyer) and its highly intelligent, economic use of musical materials.  Beyond all else, the music on Precious Child -- Love Songs & Lullabies has a distinctive, ear-catching quality that will appeal to almost everyone.   My Review:A hauntingly beautiful lullaby album that will help calm adults and children alike. I absolutely loved the renditions that both Tookes and Joe Beck made of classic children's songs and how the Jazz genre was used as the basis of this amazing CD. I have found myself using the CD daily for my home day care quiet/nap time and even in the evening after dinner to create a calm environment before bedtime. The eloquent harmonies are boundless, and seen in our family favorites like Daddy's Girl, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and I Love You Too Much. Actually the entire CD was fantastic! I know this will be part of our music collection for many years to come. It would be an absolutely perfect new baby, baby shower or even Christmas gift for any new parent in your life.I highly recommend this CD and I give it a huge thumbs up!
