Healing the Wounded Heart: A Book Review

About The Book:

Find hope and healing in the wake of sexual abuse
If you are one of the millions of people who have suffered abuse in the form of rape, incest, molestation, sexting, sexual bullying, unwanted advances, pornography, and more, you know that hope doesn't come easy and healing can seem impossible. Dan Allender has been there--and he's spent twenty-five years helping other victims of sexual abuse walk the path toward wholeness.

Never minimizing the pain or offering pat spiritual answers that don't truly address the problem, Allender calls evil evil and lights the way to renewed joy, one step at a time.

You can read an excerpt of this book, here, PDF format.

About The Author:

Dan B. Allender is professor of counseling psychology and former president of The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology in Seattle, Washington. He travels and speaks extensively on sexual abuse recovery, love and forgiveness, worship, and other related topics. Allender is the author of fifteen books, including The Wounded Heart, and coauthor of God Loves Sex.

My Review:

I was first introduced to the work of Dan Allender back in my Bible College days as I studied counselling and psychology. That book was The Cry of the Soul and to this day is one of my most loved and read books. That work was about our darker emotions and how to deal with them in a way that is honoring to the Lord. Since that time, Allender has gone on to writen several more books, including his most recent, Healing the Wounded Heart.

This book is NOT for the faint hearted. It covers the topic of sexual abuse, so if this is a subject you have first hand experience, I caution you before you read that it could be a trigger for feelings you may not have dealt with. The first part of the book is difficult to read. I personally do not have experience with sexual abuse so it was incredibly difficult for me to read but after the difficult reading came hope. The second half of the book is not a "how to get over" step by step process of ideas. However, it is a journey of encouragement that will carry the reader, or their loved one, through the dark of sexual abuse to full light that is only found in a relationship with Jesus Christ. It is a reminder that we never walk alone, even in our deepest sorrow and toughest times.

There is a workbook that can be purchased separately of the the book, as well later this fall there will be an online course that will bring participants through the book. You can find more information about this course here.

This would be a necessary read for anyone dealing with sexual abuse, be it the reader, or family and friends, and even church ministry staff.

I highly recommend this book and give it a huge thumbs up!
